The best argument for buying a car lift from a brand with real history is not a spec sheet, it is a phone call at four in the afternoon when you need a lock dog spring and somebody actually has one. We learned that lesson again on a job up in the Iowa Great Lakes region, where a small off-road and overlanding build shop was outgrowing floor jacks and stands. The Shop and What They Were Building
This was a two-bay operation in a converted implement building, run by a guy who started out fitting bumpers and roof racks for weekend Black Hills trips and ended up with a waiting list. His work is mostly suspension: lift kits, regeared axles, oversized tires, and the wheel work that comes with all of it. Tire rotation on a 37-inch mud terrain is a completely different job than rotating a set of all-seasons on a sedan, and doing it on the ground was wrecking his back and his schedule.
He came to us with a budget, a building, and a folder of screenshots from a marketplace listing for an unbranded import. We did not talk him out of it by badmouthing the competition. We asked him one question: if the cylinder starts weeping in three years, who do you call? He did not have an answer, and neither did the seller. That question is the whole reason this article exists. A car lift is not a purchase, it is a fifteen-to-twenty-year relationship with a parts supply chain, and the brand you choose determines whether that relationship is easy or miserable. We see the miserable version constantly from people who bought on price alone.
Why Brand History Actually Matters
Rotary has been building lifts since the 1920s. Challenger has decades behind it. BendPak has been at it since the 1960s. Those companies have engineering archives, serial number records, and parts catalogs that reach back through discontinued models. When we call about a component for a unit built in 1998, somebody on the other end can look it up. That is not nostalgia, it is infrastructure, and it is the single most practical reason to buy a mainstream brand.
Contrast that with the churn in the import market. An importer buys a container of columns from one factory, sells through it, then switches factories the next year because the price moved. The units look identical from ten feet away. The cylinder bore, the cable routing, the lock geometry, and the arm pin diameter are all slightly different. Two years later you own an orphan. We field these calls weekly. Somebody has a vehicle stuck in the air, a leaking cylinder, and no idea what brand the equipment is because the sticker faded off. One recent caller in Florida described a black four-post rated at 7,000 pounds with a car trapped on it and could not name the manufacturer. We can sometimes solve those puzzles from photographs and measurements. Sometimes we cannot, and the honest answer is that the whole assembly needs replacing.
Sizing the Lift Around Tire and Wheel Work
Tire rotation and wheel work drive specific requirements. You need the wheels free and hanging, which for a two-post is automatic and for a four-post means adding rolling jacks. You need clearance around the tire to swing an impact and to get a torque wrench on the lugs at the right angle. And on an overland build with 35s or 37s, you need the arms to reach frame points that sit higher and further inboard than on a stock truck.
We went with a two-post asymmetric configuration rated at 10,000 pounds. His heaviest regular customer is a fully built three-quarter-ton with a bed rack, a rooftop tent, drawers, and water storage, which realistically lands somewhere in the seven to eight thousand pound range loaded. Ten thousand gives real margin. We specified tall truck adapters in the package because reaching a lifted frame rail without them means stacking blocks, and stacking blocks under a car lift is how vehicles come off. The building had thirteen feet of clear height, so we went overhead rather than baseplate, keeping the floor open for his tire machine and balancer. He does a lot of walking between those stations with a wheel in his hands, and a floor channel would have been a daily annoyance.
Concrete, Anchors, and the Part Nobody Budgets For
Converted farm buildings are a gamble on concrete. Some were poured six inches thick for equipment traffic. Some are four inches over questionable base, and some are patchwork from three different decades. We cored two test holes before ordering anything. The results came back at five inches of decent concrete on one side and just under four with a visible cold joint on the other.
That meant cutting out a section and pouring a proper pad on the weak side, which added a week and a real chunk of cost to the project. He was not thrilled. But the alternative is anchors that pull under load, and a two-post column that shifts even slightly under a loaded truck is not a repair job, it is an incident report. We have been called out to shops where an owner-installed unit would not level and the root cause was anchors set into thin concrete that had crept. The Parts Pipeline Behind a Car Lift
Here is what actually wears out. Equalization cables stretch and fray, usually first at the sheave. Cylinder seals weep, especially if the unit sits unused for long stretches and the rod develops surface rust. Arm pins elongate. Pads compress and crack. Lock dogs and their springs wear. None of that is a design flaw, it is normal service life on a machine that lifts several tons hundreds of times a year.
What separates a good ownership experience from a bad one is whether those items are on a shelf somewhere. What the Install Day Looked Like
Once the pad cured, the install itself took a single day. We set both columns, squared and plumbed them, drilled and epoxied anchors, torqued to spec, ran the hydraulic lines, wired the power unit to the disconnect his electrician had already installed, bled the system, and cycled it empty a dozen times. Then we cycled it loaded with his own truck and checked lock synchronization on both sides.
The part that takes the longest is not the mechanical work, it is the handoff. We walk the owner and every tech through the lock routine: raise past the lock, lower onto it, confirm both sides seat audibly, shake the vehicle before going under. We show them where the equalization cables run and what a broken strand looks like. We cover the daily visual check, the monthly grease points, and the annual inspection requirement. We leave the manual, and we tell them to call us instead of guessing. On this job the owner asked good questions for an hour, which is exactly what we want. A well-installed car lift with a trained operator is one of the safest pieces of equipment in a shop. The same machine with somebody who never learned the lock routine is not. That hour is free and it is the most valuable part of the day.
What We Would Tell the Next Shop Owner

Pick the unit you are considering and find out who supplies parts for it in ten years. If the answer is a marketplace seller with no phone number, that is your answer. If the answer is a manufacturer with a serial-number lookup and a distributor network, you are on solid ground. Price differences between a mainstream brand and a mystery import narrow fast once you factor in one cylinder replacement.
The second thing we would say is measure everything before you shop. Clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Bay width post to post plus door swing. Concrete thickness, confirmed by coring rather than guessing. Heaviest vehicle you actually service, loaded, not the manufacturer’s curb weight.
