When an RV and trailer service shop just outside Ames called us about putting in a hydraulic lift automotive setup, the first thing we asked wasn’t which brand they wanted. It was how thick the floor was. They didn’t know. Nobody knows, usually — the building was put up in the eighties, the original contractor is long gone, and the only clue was that a forklift had never cracked it. That question kicked off a year we followed pretty closely, from core samples through install day through the first real service call about ten months in. Here’s how the whole thing went, including the parts that cost more than they expected and the parts that went better than we predicted.

Step One: Finding Out What the Floor Actually Is

Every manufacturer publishes a minimum concrete spec, and for most commercial two-post and four-post equipment it lands around four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with the anchors placed a minimum distance from any expansion joint or slab edge. Heavier capacity units push that to six inches. Those numbers are not suggestions. Anchor pullout is the failure mode that hurts people.

The shop hired a concrete outfit to pull three core samples across the intended bay. Two came back at just over five inches, which was great. The third — right where the front column would land — came back at three and a half, because that section had been poured separately years later when a loading door was filled in. That single core sample saved them from a very bad surprise. We see this constantly in older Iowa buildings: patched sections, trench drains that were filled in, floors that slope toward a drain and thin out at the high side. If you’re planning a hydraulic lift automotive install in a building you didn’t pour yourself, spend the few hundred dollars on core samples first. It’s the cheapest insurance in the entire project, and it’s the one step people skip because the floor looks fine from standing height.

Rebar, Fiber Mesh, and Why It Matters Less Than Thickness

People ask about rebar constantly, and the honest answer is that rebar helps but thickness and compressive strength matter more for anchor holding. A wedge anchor works by expanding against the sides of a drilled hole in solid concrete. What it needs is depth of sound material below the surface and enough distance from a free edge that the concrete cone can’t blow out sideways. Rebar in the slab does help resist cracking and keeps a cracked slab acting as one piece, which is genuinely valuable over twenty years of loading and unloading.

Where rebar becomes a problem is during installation. When we’re drilling anchor holes and hit a bar, we can’t just push through it — that ruins the bit and compromises the bar. We shift the hole, and if the base plate slot pattern doesn’t allow a shift, we’re into a different conversation. Fiber mesh, which a lot of eighties and nineties commercial pours used instead of bar, doesn’t create that problem but also doesn’t do much for us structurally. For this Ames shop we ended up cutting out and repouring the thin section — about a ten-by-twelve pad at six inches with number four bar on eighteen-inch centers, tied into the existing slab with dowels. Twenty-eight days of cure later we set columns. That repour added about three weeks and a moderate line item, and it’s the reason their equipment has never moved a millimeter.

Choosing the Configuration for RV and Trailer Work

RV and trailer shops have a wheelbase problem. A 26-foot Class C or a triple-axle gooseneck doesn’t fit on a standard four-post runway, and a two-post that swings arms under a unibody car has nowhere useful to grab on a trailer frame. This shop does mostly daily maintenance — brakes, bearings, axle service, undercarriage inspections, LP line checks, and a steady volume of light-truck work that comes in with the towing customers.

We ended up with two pieces of equipment rather than one. A long-runway four-post with 14,000 lb capacity handles the motorhomes and the big trailers, with a rolling bridge jack so they can get wheels off without unloading the runway. Next to it, a 10,000 lb two-post covers the pickups, the tow vehicles, and the occasional customer car. That split turned out to be exactly right. The four-post gets used for the long stuff and for storage between phases of a multi-day job, and the two-post handles the fast tickets. A single hydraulic lift automotive solution would have compromised on both jobs. Install Day and the First Ninety Days

Install on the four-post ran a full day plus a half day of setup and testing. Runways came in on a flatbed, we set the columns, ran and tensioned the cables, filled and bled the power unit, cycled it empty a dozen times, then loaded it and checked level across all four corners. The two-post went in the following morning and was faster because the anchor pattern was simpler.

The first ninety days are when problems show up if they’re going to. We told them to check the cable tension at thirty days, because new cables stretch and a four-post will start to sit unevenly if you don’t take that up. They did, adjusted a quarter turn on two of the four, and it’s been stable since. We also had them log the hydraulic fluid level weekly for the first month. A brand-new hydraulic lift automotive system will burp air out of the cylinder for the first several cycles and the reservoir level drops slightly as it purges — that’s normal, and it worries people who don’t expect it. The other early-life item is anchor torque. Wedge anchors relax a little as the concrete settles around them. We came back at sixty days and re-torqued every anchor to spec. It took forty minutes and it’s the difference between a lift that stays tight for twenty years and one that starts working its base plates loose in year three.

The First Real Service Call: A Bypassing Cylinder

Around month ten they called about the four-post drifting down. Loaded with a Class C, the runways would settle maybe an inch over an hour. Empty, it held fine. That pattern is a textbook internal bypass — the cylinder seals are letting fluid past the piston under load, so the column can’t hold position. It’s not usually a leak you can see on the floor, which is why owners often chase the wrong thing.

We get this exact call constantly. A shop in Florida rang us not long ago about a four-post whose ram was bypassing internally with the seal kit already sitting on the bench, and another operator called about a lift that wouldn’t go up or down with the lowering valve stuck. On this Ames unit we pulled the cylinder, found scoring on the rod where a bit of grit had gotten past the wiper seal, honed and reseal-kitted it, and had them back up in a day. The important lesson for the shop was that drift under load is never something to live with. If your hydraulic lift automotive system settles with a vehicle on it, take it out of service and use the mechanical safety locks until it’s fixed — locks are load-holding devices, hydraulics are lifting devices, and confusing the two is how people get hurt. Daily Maintenance Habits That Actually Get Done

The maintenance schedules in the manual are thorough and almost nobody follows them completely. What we push instead is a short list a tech can do in three minutes at open, because a short list that gets done beats a long list that doesn’t. Visual on the cables — look for broken strands, especially near the sheaves and terminations. Visual on the arm restraints and locks — listen for all four locks clicking as it climbs. Glance at the floor under the power unit for fresh fluid.

Monthly, this shop greases the sheave pins and the slider blocks, checks fluid level with the runways all the way down, and wipes the cylinder rods clean. Annually they get a formal inspection from us and we do cable tension, anchor torque, lock function under load, and a full fluid change if it’s due. Trailer and RV shops are harder on equipment than a car shop is — heavier loads, longer dwell times, more grit and road salt dragged in off Iowa gravel roads in March. That grit is what ate their cylinder seal. A rag and thirty seconds on the rods is genuinely preventive maintenance. Their whole first-year lesson was that a hydraulic lift automotive investment is mostly about the boring stuff: the slab, the torque wrench, and the rag.

What We’d Do Differently Next Time

Two things. First, we’d have core sampled the whole bay footprint before quoting rather than after, which would have folded the repour into the original budget instead of surfacing it as a surprise. That’s on us as much as anyone, and we’ve changed how we scope older Ames-area buildings because of it. Second, the shop would have gone with a slightly longer runway on the four-post. They picked a length that fits ninety percent of what comes in, and the remaining ten percent — the big diesel pushers — still get worked on the floor. The upcharge for the next size up was modest compared to a year of turning that work away.

Everything else they’d repeat. Two units instead of one, professional install rather than a rented forklift and a weekend, and a real service relationship with somebody who stocks parts. When the cylinder went, they weren’t waiting three weeks on a seal kit from a distributor in another state.
