A hydraulic lift automotive install in an RV and trailer shop looks nothing like a quick-lube bay job, and we learned that all over again on a project in northwest Iowa last spring. The shop owner had spent fifteen years working on travel trailers, toy haulers, and Class C motorhomes on jack stands and cribbing, and he had finally decided that was no way to spend another winter. He called us in Ames, described a 60-foot-deep building with 14-foot ceilings, seasonal storage customers rolling in every October, and a concrete slab he was not entirely sure about. Why an RV and trailer shop needed a different kind of lift

Most shops that call us are working on cars and light trucks with predictable wheelbases. An RV and trailer shop is a different animal. The vehicles coming through that northwest Iowa door ranged from a 16-foot single-axle utility trailer up to a 34-foot fifth-wheel with a dry weight north of 11,000 pounds, and the runway length mattered more than raw capacity on most jobs. A two-post would have been useless for half the fleet — you cannot pick up a bumper-pull trailer by frame arms without a lot of adapter gymnastics, and the owner was not interested in gymnastics at 7 a.m. in January.

So we spent the first conversation talking about geometry rather than tonnage. We measured his longest trailer, added clearance at both ends for the approach ramps, and confirmed he could still walk a parts cart past the runways without turning sideways. We landed on an open-front four-post with extended 20-foot runways and a rated capacity comfortably above his heaviest unit, because sizing a hydraulic lift automotive package to your exact worst-case load is how people end up limping along at 95 percent of rating forever. Headroom drove the final decision: at 14 feet he could raise a low-profile trailer high enough to stand under it, but not a tall motorhome, and he made peace with that tradeoff before we ever quoted the job. Deciding what the equipment would not do turned out to be the most useful hour of the whole project.

The concrete conversation nobody wants to have

Every install starts with the slab, and this one started with a core sample. The building had been put up in phases, and the back third — where he wanted the lift — was an addition poured sometime in the 1990s with no records. We drilled, measured, and found roughly 4.5 inches of unreinforced concrete over questionable base. That is not a catastrophe, but it is not enough for the anchor spec on a heavy four-post either, and we told him so before he wrote a check for equipment.

He had three options and we walked all three. He could relocate the lift to the original slab up front, which was thicker but cost him his best natural light and his parts flow. He could saw-cut and pour footing pads under each column, which is the standard fix and what most shops choose. Or he could pour a whole new pad section, which is the most expensive and the most permanent. He went with footing pads, we sequenced the concrete work three weeks ahead of the delivery date so it had real cure time, and the install day itself went boringly well. That is the outcome you want. When people ask us why a hydraulic lift automotive project takes six weeks instead of six days, this is why — the equipment is the easy part, and the slab is where a rushed job turns into a warranty argument and a cracked floor two winters later.

What ALI Gold certification actually means for a hydraulic lift automotive purchase

The owner had shopped online before he called us and he asked a fair question: why does one four-post cost noticeably more than another one with the same stated capacity? A big part of the answer is ALI certification. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party program where a lift model gets tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards by an independent lab, and the ALI Gold label on the column means that specific model was validated — load testing, overload testing, structural review, controls, and the manuals and safety decals that ship with it.

That matters in three practical ways for a shop like his. First, insurance and OSHA inspections get much simpler when you can point at a gold label instead of arguing about a manufacturer’s self-declaration. Second, ALI-listed models come with real installation and operation manuals, which means the next tech he hires can actually learn the equipment. Third, resale holds up. He also asked about the annual inspection side, and we explained that ALI certifies inspectors separately from lifts — a certified inspector checking a certified hydraulic lift automotive installation is the combination that satisfies almost every insurer we deal with in Iowa. Install week: delivery, alignment, and the first cycle

Delivery day in northwest Iowa in April meant mud, so we coordinated a semi with a liftgate and staged the crates inside rather than in the lot. A four-post arrives as columns, runways, cross-tubes, cables, a power unit, and a very heavy box of hardware, and the sequence matters. Columns get set and plumbed, cross-tubes and runways go up, then cables get routed and the whole assembly gets squared before a single anchor gets torqued to final spec.

Squaring is where amateur installs go wrong. If the runways are out of parallel by even a half inch across 20 feet, the cables load unevenly, one sheave wears fast, and the lift starts to drift out of level within a year. We measured diagonals, shimmed columns where the floor sloped toward a drain, and only then anchored. Hydraulic plumbing came next: cylinder, hoses, power unit mounted at the working height the owner wanted rather than wherever the bracket happened to reach. We bled the system, cycled it empty a dozen times, then loaded it with his own heaviest trailer and cycled it again while watching every safety lock engage in sequence. The first real service job went up that afternoon — a bearing repack on a tandem-axle trailer that would have eaten two hours on stands and took forty minutes at chest height. He texted us a photo that night. That is the moment the money starts making sense.

Seasonal storage: putting the runways to work in the off months

Northwest Iowa has a hard season. From late October through March, RV service work drops off a cliff and storage becomes the revenue line. Before the install, his storage business was purely floor space — one unit per parking spot. Afterward, the four-post gave him a stacking option for the smaller stuff, and that changed his winter math more than the service throughput did.

We want to be careful here, because stacking is where people get hurt. A four-post used for long-term storage needs the safety locks fully engaged on all four columns, not held up on hydraulic pressure — hydraulics leak down over months, locks do not. It needs a documented weight for whatever is parked upstairs. It needs clearance checked with the top unit actually on the runways, not calculated on paper. And it needs the drive-through path underneath kept clear so nobody backs a bumper into a column in the dark. He wrote a one-page storage SOP with us, laminated it, and hung it on the column. He now stores a small boat trailer and a Jeep on the runways with a compact car underneath for five months a year, and that revenue alone covers a meaningful chunk of what a hydraulic lift automotive package costs. It is not the reason to buy one, but it is a legitimate second job for equipment that would otherwise sit idle all winter.

The first service call: a slow leak-down at month nine

In January he called us with the complaint we hear more than any other: the lift was drifting down slowly overnight. About an inch and a half over eight hours, with a car on it. Nothing dramatic, no visible puddle, and the lift still raised normally. Most owners assume that means the cylinder is shot and they start pricing a whole new power unit. Nine times out of ten it is not the cylinder.

We walked it with him on the phone first, which is how we handle a lot of these. Check for external weeping at the hose fittings and the cylinder rod seal — dry. Check whether it holds when parked on the mechanical locks — it did, perfectly. That single answer tells you the structure and locks are fine and you are chasing a hydraulic issue, not a safety issue. From there the suspects are the lowering valve seat, the check valve in the power unit, and internal cylinder bypass, roughly in that order of likelihood. His turned out to be a bit of debris on the lowering valve seat, courtesy of fluid that had never been changed since install and had picked up assembly grit. We shipped a valve kit and fresh fluid, he did the work himself in an afternoon, and the leak-down went away. What year one taught us — and what we would tell the next shop

Looking back at twelve months, three things mattered and everything else was noise. The slab work mattered. The ALI-certified model mattered when his insurance carrier did a walkthrough in August and spent about ninety seconds on the lift instead of ninety minutes. And the maintenance schedule mattered, because the one problem he had traced directly back to fluid nobody had touched.

What did not matter as much as he expected: brand loyalty arguments, the exact capacity rating, and the online price comparisons he had agonized over for two months. The capacity was oversized enough that he never thought about it, which is exactly right. Then keep a small parts shelf — a spare lock cable, a set of cylinder seals, a bottle of the right fluid — because a lift down in the middle of a Saturday is a revenue problem, not a maintenance problem.
