Before you spend thousands on equipment, you need to measure your shop for a lift correctly — because the single most common installation problem we get called about is a lift that physically doesn’t fit the space it was bought for. The good news is that measuring your shop for a lift takes about twenty minutes with a tape measure and a notepad, and getting it right saves you from an expensive return or a bay you can never use at full height.

1. Ceiling Height Is the First Dealbreaker
The number that kills more lift purchases than any other is ceiling height. When you measure your shop for a lift, measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction over the bay — not just the peak of the ceiling. Roof trusses, ductwork, light fixtures, garage door tracks, and fire sprinklers all count. A two-post lift needs roughly 11 to 12 feet of clearance for the overhead style, or you can drop to a floorplate (baseplate) model that runs the equalizer cable through the floor and needs less overhead room. Write down the lowest point, not the average.
2. Bay Width and Column Spacing
Next, measure the usable width of the bay wall to wall, then account for anything mounted on the walls — benches, cabinets, air lines. A standard two-post lift needs about 12 feet of width to give the columns room and let a tech walk around the vehicle. When you measure your shop for a lift, also note where the columns will land relative to any floor drains or existing anchors, because you can’t anchor a column base into a drain trench.
3. Bay Depth and Door Swing
Depth matters for drive-through and for arm swing. Measure from the overhead door back to the rear wall. You want enough room to pull the longest vehicle you service fully inside with the door closed, plus space behind for the tech. If your bay has a drive-through door, note that too. Also check the overhead door’s open height — a door that only opens to 10 feet can limit which lift you install even if the ceiling behind it is higher.
4. Slab Thickness and Condition
A lift is only as safe as the concrete it’s anchored to. Manufacturers and ALI require a minimum slab thickness and strength — commonly 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for most two-post lifts, more for heavy-duty units. When you measure your shop for a lift, find out how thick your slab is. You can check at an expansion joint or an existing anchor hole, or core-drill a small test hole. If your slab is thin, cracked, or has radiant heat tubing in it, tell us before install — we can often recommend a lift with a different anchor pattern or a slab cut-and-pour.
5. Power Availability
Most two-post and four-post lifts run on 220V single-phase or 208/240V three-phase. Note what power you have at or near the bay and the distance to the panel. This won’t change whether a lift fits, but it changes the install quote, so capture it while you measure your shop for a lift.

Overhead vs. Floorplate: How It Changes Your Measurements
One decision changes your ceiling math more than any other when you measure your shop for a lift: overhead versus floorplate design. An overhead two-post lift runs the equalizer cable and shutoff bar across the top between the columns, which is convenient and keeps the floor clean — but it needs the most ceiling height, typically 11 to 12 feet. A floorplate (baseplate) lift runs the cable through a plate across the floor instead, so it fits under lower ceilings, at the cost of a small ridge you drive over.
If your first measurement shows a low ceiling, don’t give up on a two-post lift — measure for a floorplate model instead. This is exactly why we ask for the lowest-obstruction height rather than the peak: it tells us which of the two designs your bay can take.
Don’t Forget the Vehicle at Full Height
A final check people skip when they measure your shop for a lift: the vehicle rises too. Take your tallest vehicle’s height, add the lift’s full rise, and confirm the total clears your ceiling and your lights. A tall van raised to working height can put its roof into a fixture that looked plenty high with the bay empty. Measure the empty bay, then do the math with the vehicle on the lift.
