How does a car lift work at the mechanical level

At the most basic level, how does a car lift work comes down to hydraulics doing the heavy lifting and mechanical safeties holding the vehicle in place. An electric motor drives a hydraulic pump. The pump forces oil under pressure through steel-braided hoses into one or two cylinders. A cylinder is a piston sealed inside a cylinder body — as oil pushes into the base, the piston extends, and that motion is what raises the vehicle. On a two-post lift, cables and pulleys share the load between the two columns so both sides rise together. On a four-post, chains or wire rope lift all four columns in sync. Every raised lift also has a mechanical lock — a spring-loaded pawl that drops into a ladder of steel notches — so if the hydraulic system ever fails, the car stays up. That combination of hydraulic power plus mechanical lock backup is the fundamental design pattern behind every ALI-certified lift on the market today, whether it is a home four-post or a 30,000 lb heavy-duty commercial machine.

Hydraulic power units — the heart of the system

Understanding how does a car lift work starts with the power unit. The power unit is the box mounted on one of the columns with a motor, a reservoir tank, a pump, and a control valve. Push the up button, the motor kicks on, the pump moves oil, and the cylinders extend. Push the down lever, the control valve opens a bleed-off passage, and gravity pulls the vehicle down while oil returns to the tank. A healthy power unit runs quiet, holds pressure without drifting, and cycles a full lift raise in about 45 to 60 seconds. When we get service calls in central Iowa about a lift that will not raise, the diagnosis is almost always in the power unit — low fluid, a stuck check valve, a failing solenoid, or a burnt motor. Two-post lifts: how the equalizer and cables balance the load

Each of the two columns has its own hydraulic cylinder, but if one side rose slightly faster than the other the vehicle would tilt. To prevent that, an equalizer cable runs from one column, up and over pulleys, and down to the other. As one side rises, the cable pulls the other side up in perfect sync. On an overhead two-post like a Rotary SPOA10, that equalizer runs along the top crossbar. On a low-ceiling floor-plate model, it runs along the floor between the columns. Either way, the physics is the same. When shops call us about one side rising faster than the other, the answer is almost always a stretched or broken equalizer cable — and replacing those cables is a routine service we do throughout Iowa. Keeping equalizer cables tensioned properly is one of the most important maintenance items on any two-post lift, and it is the first thing our techs check on an annual inspection.

Four-post lifts: chain-driven columns and drive-on ramps

Four-post lifts work a little differently. Only one column typically has the hydraulic cylinder — usually the front driver’s side. That cylinder pushes a heavy roller chain up and over sheaves at the top of each column, and those chains lift the four corners of the runway platform. Because the load is spread across four columns and the vehicle sits on runways instead of hanging from frame pads, four-posts are the natural pick for storage and long-term parking. The mechanics are elegant — one power unit, one cylinder, four synchronized columns via steel chain. Cable-driven four-posts exist too and follow the same principle with wire rope instead of chain. On a two-post, each column has a ladder — a vertical row of steel notches welded to the column. A spring-loaded pawl on the carriage drops into those notches as the carriage rises past each one. Once the operator raises the vehicle to the desired height and lets the lift settle down onto the nearest lock, the pawl carries the load, not the hydraulic cylinder. This is critical because hydraulic seals eventually leak and drop pressure, but a steel pawl in a steel notch does not. On a four-post, the mechanism is similar — locking bars run down each column and engage in slots. Never work under a lift being held only by hydraulics. Always raise, then release, then let the mechanical lock engage.
