A body shop foreman in eastern Nebraska called us last spring because his crew was doing differential fluid service on the floor with a transmission jack and a lot of bad language, and he wanted to know which 2 post car lift would actually still be serviceable in fifteen years. Why Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

Spec sheets converge. Almost every 10,000 lb two-post on the market claims the same lifting height, the same arm reach, the same 220V single-phase power draw. What separates a machine that serves a Nebraska body shop for two decades from one that becomes a very heavy coat rack is the company standing behind it — how long they have been building lifts, whether they own their engineering, and whether they still support a model twelve years after they stopped selling it.

Rotary has been building automotive lifts since the 1920s and has the deepest legacy parts catalog in the industry. We have pulled carriage slide blocks and equalizer cables for Rotary SPOA10 units that predate the current owner of the shop they were installed in. Challenger has a shorter but very solid history and is the brand we lean on when a customer wants heavy commercial capability without the Rotary price tier. On the home and light-commercial side, BendPak has built a genuine engineering reputation over four decades, and Atlas serves the budget-conscious hobbyist well. The names we do not carry are usually absent for one reason: when a part fails in year eight, there is nobody to call. That is the entire case for brand history in one sentence.

The Parts Pipeline Is the Real Product

Here is something the sales brochures never say out loud: you are not buying a machine, you are buying access to a parts pipeline. A two-post is a simple assembly — columns, carriages, arms, a cylinder or two, cables or chains, a power unit, and a safety lock system. Every one of those wear items will need replacing eventually. Cables stretch. Cylinder seals weep. Lock latches wear their engagement teeth. Power unit motors burn out after enough duty cycles.

When we quote a lift, we are quietly checking whether we can get those parts in three days or three months. Rotary and Challenger both have distributor networks that move fast, and we keep common wear items on our own shelves in Ames — cables, seal kits, lock dogs, arm restraint gears, pads. For a shop in eastern Nebraska, that means a Tuesday phone call and a Thursday repair instead of a bay sitting dead for a month. We have taken over service on off-brand equipment where the importer had folded and the only fix was fabricating a carriage roller from scratch. It worked, but it cost the owner more than the difference between his bargain lift and a name-brand one would have. Buy the pipeline, not the sticker.

Capacity, Symmetric vs. Asymmetric, and Differential Work

The eastern Nebraska foreman’s actual workload — differential fluid service, driveline work, exhaust, brakes — pushed the decision more than his vehicle list did. Ten thousand pounds covers essentially every passenger car, half-ton, and most three-quarter-ton trucks. Twelve thousand gives you comfortable margin on loaded duallies and cargo vans. Fifteen thousand and up is for fleet and medium-duty work. Most general repair shops we outfit land on 10,000 or 12,000 and never wish they had gone bigger.

The symmetric versus asymmetric question matters more for undercar work than people expect. Symmetric puts the vehicle centered between the columns with equal arms, which gives you the cleanest access to a rear differential and the most stable load distribution for heavy trucks. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses short front arms so doors clear the posts — better for a shop doing lots of interior work or squeezed on bay width. For differential fluid service specifically, where a tech is standing under the rear of the vehicle with a fluid pump and needs elbow room, we usually steer shops toward a symmetric setup or a versymmetric design that splits the difference. Talk through your actual daily job mix before you sign anything.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Budgets For

We have turned down more installations over concrete than over any other single issue. A 2 post car lift transfers the entire vehicle load, plus leverage, into a handful of anchor bolts in your slab. Manufacturers typically specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with adequate depth and no cracking or expansion joints under the base plates. Four inches is the floor, not the target — we prefer six.

A customer in northern Missouri told us his shop slab was “about five inches, maybe less.” We cored it. It was three and a half over gravel fill in the section where he wanted the columns. The fix was a pair of concrete pads poured to spec, roughly a two-day job with a cure wait, and it added meaningfully to the project. But the alternative was anchor bolts pulling out of thin concrete under a loaded pickup, and nobody wants to be the person who found out that way. If you do not know what is under your floor, core it or hammer-drill a test hole before you order equipment. We would rather deliver bad news at the quote stage than at the install.

Overhead vs. Baseplate: Ceiling Height Decides

Every buyer asks about clearfloor versus baseplate, and the answer is almost always determined by the building rather than by preference. A clearfloor overhead-beam design keeps the bay floor completely open — nothing to roll a creeper over, nothing to trip on, no hydraulic line in a channel across the concrete. It is the better setup if you have the height. Most overhead models want twelve feet of clear ceiling, and some need more once you account for the shutoff bar.

A buyer in North Dakota came to us with a hard 139-inch maximum height — just over eleven and a half feet — and a heaviest vehicle around 6,000 pounds. Overhead was off the table, so baseplate it was. Baseplate designs run the hydraulic and equalizer lines through a low channel bolted across the floor between the columns, which means you get full lifting height in a shorter building at the cost of a small ridge on the floor. We install a lot of these in older Nebraska and Iowa shops with low trusses or in home garages with a loft on one side. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay, not the peak — sprinkler heads, unit heaters, and garage door tracks have killed more overhead installs than actual ceiling height has. What Breaks, When, and What It Costs

After enough service calls you start to see the pattern. Equalizer cables are the most common wear item on a chain-and-cable two-post; they stretch over time, need periodic adjustment, and eventually need replacement — usually somewhere between year seven and year twelve depending on cycle count. Cylinder seal kits are next. A cylinder that weeps a little at the rod is a seal job, not a replacement, and it is a fraction of the cost if you catch it early. Safety lock latches, arm restraint gears, and slide blocks round out the list.

The failure that scares people most is the one that is usually the cheapest fix. We got a call from a shop with a Challenger two-post that would not lift — motor running, fluid full, no leaks. That is almost always a stuck or contaminated check valve, a plugged suction screen, or air in the system, and it is a service call and a cleanup, not a new power unit. Owners who assume the worst and start shopping for replacement equipment routinely spend thousands they did not need to. Call somebody who works on these before you condemn one. Buying a 2 Post Car Lift Without Regret

The buyers who are happiest a decade later all did the same handful of things. They bought a brand with a real parts pipeline instead of the cheapest listing they could find. They verified their concrete before ordering. They measured to the lowest obstruction. They bought a hundred or two thousand pounds more capacity than their current heaviest vehicle. And they had it installed and certified by someone who does it for a living rather than by two guys and a rented forklift on a Saturday.

The buyers who regret their purchase usually skipped one of those. We are not trying to talk anyone into the most expensive machine on the floor — plenty of hobbyists and small shops are perfectly served by a well-chosen entry-level unit, and we sell those too.
