When a car lift wont lift, most shop owners assume the worst – a blown pump or a cracked cylinder – and start pricing a replacement before they’ve even opened the power unit cover. We’ve been installing and servicing lifts across Iowa for years, and in our experience the majority of “dead lift” calls turn out to be something simple: a tripped breaker, an empty reservoir, a stuck relief valve, or a safety lock that never disengaged. Before you call for service, walk through the checks below. It costs you nothing but a few minutes, and it’s the same order of operations our own techs follow on a service call.

Start With Power Before You Touch Hydraulics

The single most common reason a car lift wont lift is that it isn’t actually getting power. This sounds obvious, but we get calls every month where the fix is a reset breaker or a loose plug. Check the dedicated circuit breaker first, then check the disconnect switch if your shop has one wired in. Many two-post and four-post lifts run on 220V single phase, and a partially tripped breaker can let the motor hum without turning – which sounds like a problem lift but is really an electrical one.

If power looks fine at the panel, listen at the power unit itself when you hit the up button. A healthy motor hums and the pump engages almost immediately. If you hear nothing at all, check the up-button wiring and the contactor inside the power unit housing – these get corroded or chewed by rodents more often than people expect in older Iowa shop buildings. If the motor hums loudly but nothing moves, that’s usually not an electrical problem anymore – it points toward the hydraulic side, which is where we go next.

Check Hydraulic Fluid Level and Quality

Low fluid is the second most common reason a car lift wont lift, and it’s the easiest to overlook because the reservoir sits low and out of sight on most power units. Pull the dipstick or check the sight glass and compare it to the full mark with the lift fully lowered. If it’s low, that alone can prevent the pump from priming enough to build pressure, especially on colder mornings when fluid is thicker and harder to pull through the pickup tube.

While you’re in there, look at the fluid itself. Milky, foamy, or dark fluid usually means water contamination or a breakdown from age, and pumps struggle to build pressure with contaminated fluid even at a proper level. If your lift sits in an unheated bay through an Iowa winter, this is worth checking every season, not just when something goes wrong. Use the hydraulic fluid your manufacturer specifies – substituting the wrong viscosity is a quiet cause of weak or absent lift performance that people rarely think to check.

Inspect the Relief Valve and Solenoid

Every hydraulic power unit has a relief valve that protects the system from overpressure, and when it sticks open or gets gummed up with debris, the pump can run all day without building enough pressure to move the lift. This is one of the more common internal reasons a car lift wont lift even though the motor sounds completely normal. On many units the relief valve is a small adjustable screw or cartridge near the pump housing – a stuck-open relief valve lets fluid bypass back to the reservoir instead of pushing toward the cylinder.

Solenoid valves cause a similar symptom. These control the flow direction and can fail electrically or get stuck mechanically from varnished fluid. If you hear a faint click when you press the button but still get no movement, that’s often a solenoid that’s energizing but not fully shifting. We stock replacement relief valves and solenoids for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas power units, and swapping one out is usually a same-day fix once you’ve confirmed it’s the culprit rather than guessing at it.

Look at the Locking Mechanism

On two-post lifts especially, mechanical locks are designed to catch automatically as the carriage rises, and on some models a stuck or misaligned lock can prevent the lift from moving at all as a safety measure. If your lift moved a few inches and then stopped dead, check whether a lock pawl is jammed against the column rack rather than riding freely past it. A bent lock dog, a broken return spring, or built-up grime in the column channel are all common causes we see during Iowa service calls, particularly on lifts that don’t get lubricated on a regular schedule.

Four-post and scissor lifts use a different locking style, often a bar that drops into notches along the runway, but the principle is the same – if a lock has failed to retract, the lift’s control system may refuse to send it up. Clean and lubricate the lock mechanism, check the cable or linkage that pulls it, and confirm the return spring still has tension. This is a five-minute check that resolves more service calls than people expect.

Rule Out Air in the Hydraulic Lines

Air trapped in the hydraulic lines produces a lift that moves slowly, unevenly, or not at all despite a properly running pump. This tends to happen after fluid has been added, after a hose or cylinder has been disconnected for repair, or after a lift has sat unused for an extended period. Air compresses where hydraulic fluid doesn’t, so instead of that pressure pushing the piston, it just squeezes the trapped air pocket.

Bleeding the system typically means cycling the lift up and down several times with no load, sometimes with a bleed screw open at the cylinder, following your specific manufacturer’s procedure. If you’ve recently had cylinder or hose work done and now the car lift wont lift smoothly, air is the first thing we check before assuming a bigger hydraulic failure. It’s a quick fix once you know the symptom.

Check the Cylinder for Internal Bypass

If everything upstream checks out – power, fluid, valves, locks, and air – the cylinder itself may be bypassing internally. Worn seals let fluid slip past the piston instead of pushing it upward, which often shows up as a lift that rises a little under light effort but stalls or refuses to move under full resistance. This is more common on older lifts or units that have run with contaminated fluid for a long time, since debris accelerates seal wear.

Cylinder work is one of the few checks on this list that usually calls for a professional inspection, since pulling a cylinder and inspecting the piston and seals takes the right tools and experience to do safely. When to Call for Professional Service

If you’ve worked through power, fluid, valves, locks, and air with no luck, it’s time to bring in a technician rather than keep guessing. Repeated troubleshooting without proper gauges can mask a developing problem, and running a lift under load while it’s malfunctioning is a safety risk we don’t recommend taking on your own equipment or your technicians’ safety.
