Before you buy anything, ask the seller two questions: what does a full cable set cost, and how long does it take to get one. If the answer is a shrug, that is your answer. Reading the Signs: Fraying, Stretch, and Uneven Carriages
Cable inspection is not complicated and it does not require tools. Broken strands are not a maintenance item you schedule for spring. They are a stop-using-the-lift item. A wire rope loses strength fast once the outer strands go, and the failure is sudden rather than gradual.
The second symptom is drift. Raise the lift empty and watch the two carriages. If one arrives at the locks a visible inch ahead of the other, your cables have stretched unevenly or a sheave is binding. Some stretch in the first sixty days is normal and gets taken out with the adjusting nuts at the cable ends. Persistent drift after adjustment means the cable has yielded and needs replacement. Also inspect the sheaves themselves — grooved, gouged pulleys chew cables faster than anything else, and swapping a cable without replacing a worn sheave just buys you another year of the same problem. But raw capacity is not what makes that work pleasant. Arm geometry is. Look for three-stage front arms with drop-end or low-profile pad options if you plan to work on anything with a low rocker — restoration cars and older muscle sit lower than a modern crossover. Symmetric versus asymmetric matters too: asymmetric columns are rotated so the doors clear, which is a real benefit if you plan to sit in the car while it is up, but symmetric setups center the load better for long-wheelbase trucks. Telescoping screw pads with adapters cover most of the gap either way. And check your ceiling honestly before ordering. A clear-floor overhead model needs roughly twelve feet minimum; if you are stuck at eleven, a baseplate configuration keeps the crossbar at floor level and still gives you full underside access for exhaust and driveline jobs.
Concrete, Anchors, and the Thing Hobbyists Underestimate
Concrete is where most home installs go sideways. The published requirement for a typical 10,000 lb two-post is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and many manufacturers now specify four and a quarter or more. Plenty of the pole barns and detached garages we survey across eastern Iowa have four inches on paper and three and a half in reality, poured over questionable base with no rebar and a control joint running exactly where you want a column.
