A heavy-duty truck shop owner in western Illinois called us in February with a straightforward-sounding question: what does a 2 post car lift really cost, start to finish, for a bay that pulls transmissions out of medium-duty trucks and three-quarter-ton pickups all week? He had three quotes in hand and none of them agreed, mostly because none of them included the same things. One had freight, one didn’t. One quoted a 12,000 lb unit and one quoted 15,000 lb. Nobody mentioned the electrical. We sat down and built him an honest line-item breakdown, and since we get that same call from shops across the Midwest, here is the whole thing.

Line One: The Equipment Itself
Capacity drives price more than any other single factor, and it is not linear. Stepping from 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb is a modest increase. Stepping from 12,000 lb to 15,000 or 18,000 lb is a different class of machine — heavier columns, larger cylinders, three-stage arms, and often a 208/230V three-phase power unit. In broad tiers, a mainstream 10,000 lb symmetric or versymmetric clearfloor unit sits at the entry end of commercial pricing. A 12,000 lb runs meaningfully higher. A 15,000 lb two-post with tall columns is roughly double the 10,000 lb number, and 18,000 lb heavy-duty climbs from there.
For this shop, the wrong move would have been buying at the bottom of the range. His heaviest regular vehicle was a Class 4 cab-and-chassis at around 11,200 lb curb, and transmission work means the load shifts rearward and outboard as soon as the case comes off the bellhousing. A 12,000 lb machine at 11,200 lb of vehicle with an unbalanced load is not where you want to live daily. We specced a 15,000 lb three-stage-arm unit. That is a real cost jump, and we told him so before we told him the model number, because a 2 post car lift sized correctly the first time is cheaper than one replaced in four years.
Model Numbers and What the Digits Mean
Shop owners get lost in part numbers, and vendors exploit that. On the Rotary side, the SPO and SPOA families are the two-post workhorses — SPO indicates a symmetric or versymmetric clearfloor, SPOA an asymmetric arrangement, with the numeric suffix giving capacity in thousands of pounds. An SPO12 is a 12,000 lb clearfloor. An SPO15 is 15,000 lb. Suffix letters after that generally indicate column height and arm configuration, and this is where a quote can look identical and be a completely different machine.
Challenger’s commercial two-post line runs similarly, with the CL and Versymmetric families covering roughly 10,000 through 18,000 lb, and their heavy-duty units built for exactly the medium-duty truck work this Illinois shop does. For home and light-duty applications we point people at BendPak and Atlas — a BendPak XPR-10S, for instance, is a 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor with an expandable top beam and telescoping screw pads, and it is a genuinely good machine in a residential or light commercial bay. It is not the machine for a shop dropping Allison transmissions. When you compare quotes, write down the full model string including suffixes, then compare rated capacity, lifting height, column height, arm stages, and power unit voltage side by side. Two quotes that differ by 30 percent on a 2 post car lift are usually quoting two different machines.
Line Two: Freight, and Why It Varies So Much
Freight on a two-post is not a rounding error. A 15,000 lb unit crates out well over 3,000 lb across two skids, one of which is twelve-plus feet long. Standard LTL dock-to-dock delivery from a regional warehouse into western Illinois generally runs in the low-to-mid hundreds. That number climbs fast if you need residential delivery, limited-access delivery, an appointment window, inside delivery, or a liftgate — and on a twelve-foot skid, most carriers will decline the liftgate entirely because the load overhangs the gate.
The cheapest path is almost always a forklift you already have or can borrow. Four thousand pounds of capacity and 48-inch forks handles any two-post skid we ship. If you do not have one, tell us during the quote, not on delivery day, because we can often route the equipment on our own truck when we are already installing in your area and the arithmetic changes. The other freight cost nobody prices in is your own time: a driver who arrives outside the window with no help and a shop foreman standing in the lot for two hours is a real expense. Inspect before signing. Note every bent flange and every scuffed reservoir on the delivery receipt. A clean signature on a damaged pallet transfers the loss to you, and we have watched a shop eat a replacement column over a thirty-second oversight.
Line Three: Concrete, Anchors, and the Hidden Slab Cost
Most manufacturers require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb two-post, and heavier machines want more — typically six inches or better for 15,000 lb and up, sometimes with a specified footing pad. This is the line item that turns a routine install into a project. The Illinois shop had a slab poured in the late 1980s that measured five and a half inches on a core drill in one corner and four and a quarter in another, with an old expansion joint running exactly where we wanted the passenger column.
The fix was a pair of engineered footing pads: saw-cut, break out roughly four feet by four feet at each column location, dig down, and pour new 4,000 PSI concrete to spec with rebar. That added a meaningful chunk to the project — call it a low four-figure add for the concrete work and cure time — and it added ten days to the schedule because you do not anchor into green concrete. We would rather deliver that news at quote time than after the equipment is sitting in the bay. Line Four: Electrical, Air, and the Trades You Forgot
Power unit requirements are printed in every manual and read by almost nobody. A 10,000 lb two-post typically runs 208/230V single-phase on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Larger units frequently want three-phase, and if your building only has single-phase service, you are either ordering a single-phase power unit at a price premium or paying for a rotary phase converter. Either way it is a cost line.
Then there is the run itself. Conduit, wire, a fused disconnect within sight of the lift, and an electrician’s labor at current Midwest commercial rates. A short run from a nearby panel is a few hundred dollars. A hundred-foot run across an old truck shop with a full panel and no open breakers can run well past a thousand, sometimes several. Air matters too: most two-post safety-release systems are air-actuated, so you need a shop air line at the column with an accessible drop. If your compressor is at the other end of the building, add copper or PEX-AL and fittings. Line Five: Installation Labor and Commissioning
A correct two-post install is a full day for a two-person crew on a straightforward slab, longer on a heavy-duty unit or a bay with obstructions. The work is not glamorous but every step matters: layout and square to the bay, mark and drill anchor holes with a rotary hammer, set and plumb both columns with shims, torque anchors to manufacturer spec in the correct sequence, install the overhead beam and shutoff bar, route and tension equalization cables, mount and fill the power unit, connect hoses, bleed the system, then cycle the machine unloaded and loaded through the full travel while checking lock engagement at every latch position.
Commissioning is the part that separates a professional install from a Saturday project. We verify carriage synchronization, confirm the safety locks drop and hold at each rung, check for cylinder weep, set the overhead shutoff, and walk the shop’s technicians through daily and monthly inspection points per ANSI ALI guidelines. On mainstream capacities, installed labor for a 2 post car lift typically runs in the four-figure range, with heavy-duty and 18,000 lb units higher. Skipping it to save money is a bad trade — a quarter-inch out-of-plumb column will chase you with uneven lock engagement and premature cable wear for the entire life of the machine.
The All-In Number and What It Bought
Adding it up for the western Illinois shop: a 15,000 lb three-stage-arm two-post, freight on our truck, engineered footing pads at both columns, a new 30-amp three-phase run with disconnect, an air drop, and a full professional install with commissioning. The project landed in the low five figures all-in, roughly 40 percent above what he had budgeted from the cheapest quote on his desk — and about a third of that overage was concrete and electrical he never would have known about until the crew showed up.
Was it worth it? He runs two to three transmission jobs a week that used to go out to a shop ninety minutes away, plus everything else the bay now absorbs. The equipment paid itself back inside the first year and it will be lifting trucks in 2045 if he keeps the cables inspected and the reservoir topped. That is the honest case for buying capacity you need instead of price you like.
