The garage that started the conversation
He collects, and he builds. Four vehicles live in that building at any given time, and one of them is always torn down. The work he described to us was not oil changes — it was cutting rusted floor pans out of a unibody, grinding welds along a rocker, and running a MIG gun overhead for hours at a stretch. That single detail reshaped the whole conversation, because sustained overhead work changes what you need from a lift. You want the vehicle at chest-to-eye height for long stretches, you want the underside completely open, and you want to walk a full circle around the car without stepping over runways.
That’s the case where two columns genuinely beat four. A four-post is a storage machine and a great one, but the runways sit under the rockers exactly where a restoration guy needs clearance. He’d already tried working off a low-rise scissor and hated it — no room for a creeper seat, no room for his welding cart, and constant repositioning. He also wasn’t willing to give up floor space permanently, which is where a clear-floor design earned its keep. When we walked the building with a tape measure, the decision had already made itself. The question was never really two posts versus four. It was which two-post, and whether to buy someone else’s problem or a new one with paperwork.
What we actually measured before quoting anything
Nobody should shop capacity before they shop concrete and ceiling. We measured the slab first, because that’s the item that kills more installs than any other. We cored a small test hole in an inconspicuous corner and found just over five inches of reasonably clean concrete with no rebar in the way. That’s workable for most 10,000 lb clear-floor columns, though we always want to see the manufacturer’s minimum spelled out in writing before anchors go in. Thinner slabs, control joints running through the anchor pattern, or radiant heat tubing all change the plan — sometimes to a saw-cut-and-pour footing, sometimes to a baseplate model instead.
Ceiling came next. Twelve feet is comfortable but not unlimited. With an overhead-beam column you’re stacking column height, beam depth, and then the tallest vehicle you plan to raise. His tallest was a full-size pickup at roughly 78 inches, and once we did the math the overhead configuration fit with room to spare. Then we measured bay width, door opening, and the swing path of the arms. We also asked where the power was. Most residential two-post columns run single-phase 208-230V on a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and “I’ll just run an extension cord” is not an answer. He needed an electrician for a day. Budget for that. On roughly half the residential jobs we quote, the electrical is the line item the customer forgot entirely, and it’s rarely trivial.
The used vs new framework we gave him
We sell new equipment, so take this with whatever salt you want, but we also service used units every week and we’ve seen what shows up. Here’s the framework we actually use. First: is it ALI-certified, and can you find the model in current documentation? If the manufacturer is gone or the model predates any certification program, parts sourcing becomes a scavenger hunt. Second: can you inspect the cables, sheaves, arm restraints, and column welds in person, in daylight, before money changes hands? Photos hide everything that matters. Third: does the seller have the original anchors, the installation manual, and any service history?
Fourth, and this is the one people underestimate: what does teardown, transport, and reinstallation cost? Pulling a used 2 post car lift out of someone’s garage means breaking anchors loose, laying two heavy columns down without damaging them, hauling them, and then re-anchoring into your slab. That’s a day of labor and a trailer at minimum. A used unit at 40 percent of new price can land at 70 percent of new price by the time it’s standing and certified in your building — and you own zero warranty. In this case we found him a lightly used unit through a shop that was closing, but the seller wanted him to handle removal, and the cables were original from 2009. He walked. He bought new, and he told us in month eight that the warranty conversation alone was worth the difference.
Install day, and the thing that always surprises people
Installation ran most of a day. Two of us, a chalk line, a rotary hammer, and a lot of measuring. The columns came in on a liftgate truck and we moved them with an engine hoist and a pallet jack — worth noting, because “I have a forklift for unloading” changes freight cost meaningfully and we ask every customer about it up front. If you don’t have a way to get a 1,500-pound crate off a trailer, tell us before we book the shipment, not after the driver is in your driveway.
The surprise, as always, was the anchor torque and the shimming. Concrete floors are almost never flat. We shimmed one column base to get both plumb within spec, torqued anchors to the manufacturer’s number, then bled the hydraulics and cycled the unit empty a dozen times before a vehicle ever went on it. Then we ran the safety locks through every position and listened. Both sides need to engage together — a lift that clicks unevenly is telling you something about equalization, and it’s better to hear that on install day. We finished by walking him through the daily and monthly inspection items and taped a laminated checklist to the column. That checklist is genuinely the highest-value thing we leave behind, and the customers who use it are the ones we don’t hear from at 4:30 on a Friday.
Months two through eleven: what a collector actually does with it
He used it more than he expected. That’s the near-universal pattern. Every owner we talk to says “maybe monthly” during the sales conversation and then reports weekly use by spring. In his case, the coupe went up in March and basically stayed up through May while he cut and welded floor pans. He mentioned three things he hadn’t anticipated. First, the drop-end arms mattered more than he thought — getting pads under a low unibody pinch weld on a car that sits three inches off the ground is a real problem, and low-profile arms solved it.
Second, he bought a set of stackable pad adapters within the first month. Frame-contact points vary wildly across a collection spanning four decades, and the pads that ship with a lift are sized for modern vehicles. Third, he learned not to leave the vehicle resting on hydraulic pressure. Raise it, lower it onto the mechanical locks, and let steel hold the weight. That single habit is the difference between a cylinder that seeps at year three and one that doesn’t. He also added a drip tray under the power unit and a small fan — the columns sit near a north wall and condensation in an unheated Iowa shop is real. None of this is exotic. It’s just the stuff you learn in the first year of owning a two-post that nobody thinks to mention at the point of sale.
The first service call: what went wrong, and what didn’t
Month eleven, he called. The lift was drifting down slowly overnight when parked on hydraulic pressure — maybe two inches over twelve hours. He was convinced the cylinder was shot. It wasn’t. Nine times out of ten a slow-creep complaint on a healthy unit is a check valve holding a bit of debris, or a lowering valve that isn’t seating because the release linkage is out of adjustment. In this case it was fluid. The unit had been filled with the wrong hydraulic oil by a helpful friend who topped it off with something from a shelf, and the viscosity was off enough to matter in a cold shop.
We drained it, flushed it, refilled with the specified fluid, cleaned the check valve, adjusted the lowering linkage, and re-tested. Total visit: about two hours. We also did a full annual inspection while we were there — cables, sheaves, arm restraint gear teeth, anchor torque, lock engagement, and the overhead shutoff bar. Anchors had held torque. Cables showed no broken strands. That’s a good first-year report card. The lesson for anyone shopping a 2 post car lift right now: the failures that actually happen in year one are maintenance failures, not manufacturing failures. If you’re building a restoration space and weighing a 2 post car lift against everything else, here’s the short version of a year’s worth of learning. Buy for the work you actually do, not the work you imagine. If you weld, grind, and spend hours under a car, two columns and a clear floor win. If you’re storing vehicles and doing light maintenance, a four-post may serve you better and cost less to install. Don’t buy capacity you’ll never use — a 10,000 lb unit covers essentially every passenger vehicle and most half-ton pickups, and jumping to 12,000 or 14,000 buys you column mass and cost, not usable function.
On used versus new: used can work, but only if you can inspect it in person, verify the model is still supported, and price in teardown, freight, reinstall, new cables, and new anchors. Do that honestly and the gap narrows fast. And whatever you buy, treat the annual inspection as non-negotiable.
