The lift was fine. The problem was a set of worn adapters, a slab that had settled a quarter inch across one column, and a technician who had been setting pads on pinch weld seams without the right cradle. That call is the reason for this article, because the European-marque world is full of confident myths about two-post lifting, and most of them cost shops money.

Myth One: ALI Gold Is Just a Marketing Sticker
It is not. ALI Gold certification means an independent third-party lab tested that specific model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard — load capacity, structural adequacy, lowering speed, load holding, arm restraints, safety locks, controls, and the completeness of the installation and operating manuals. The manufacturer does not self-certify. A field auditor also inspects the production line periodically to confirm the units coming off it match what was tested. That is a meaningfully different thing from a company printing “meets or exceeds standards” on a brochure, which anyone can do with no testing at all.
Where it gets practical for a European specialty shop is insurance and liability. If a customer’s Porsche comes off a lift, the first document anyone requests is proof the equipment was certified and installed to spec. Uncertified equipment turns a bad day into a much worse one. Beyond that, certification correlates strongly with the parts and documentation you will need in year eight. Myth Two: You Cannot Do Real Alignment Work on a Two-Post
Shops have been aligning cars on two-post equipment for decades. What a two-post lacks is a set of turnplates and slip plates built into runways, which is what a dedicated alignment rack provides. But plenty of European specialists do camber, caster, and toe work on a two-post using bolt-on turnplate kits or by setting the vehicle at working height and using the suspension’s own articulation. The critical requirement is not the number of posts — it is that the vehicle sits level and that the lift itself is level, front to rear and side to side.
That is where the West Des Moines shop had actually gone wrong. Their columns were plumb when installed years earlier, but the slab under one of them had settled slightly and nobody had rechecked. A quarter-inch difference across a wheelbase is enough to throw a spec sheet reading and make a technician chase a phantom alignment. We shimmed and re-anchored, verified with a laser, and their numbers came back into agreement with the road test. If your shop lives on alignment volume all day every day, a purpose-built rack earns its floor space. Myth Three: The Rubber Blocks That Came With It Are Good Enough
Generic round rubber pucks are the number one cause of crushed pinch welds on German cars. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche unibodies designate specific lift points, usually a reinforced section of pinch weld or a molded plastic jack pad. A flat rubber block puts the entire load onto the thin seam, and the seam folds. Once it folds you have paint damage, potential rust entry, and an unhappy owner who noticed.
The correct hardware is a slotted pinch weld adapter — a cradle with a channel that captures the seam and transfers load to the shoulders on either side. Different marques need different slot widths and different heights, and some models need a frame cradle or a marque-specific puck instead. Shops that do this professionally keep three or four adapter styles in a drawer next to the lift and swap them per vehicle. It is inexpensive hardware. We sell it, and we sell it constantly to shops that just replaced a rocker panel because they did not have it. Also worth noting: adapters wear. Rubber compresses and hardens, slots widen, and a ten-year-old adapter no longer captures a seam properly. Myth Four: Low Cars and Two-Posts Do Not Mix
Low-slung European cars do create a real challenge, but it is a solvable one. The issue is arm pad height at the lowest setting versus the ground clearance of a Porsche 911 or a lowered M car. If your arms and adapters stack up to five and a half inches and the car’s rocker sits at four and a half, you cannot get under it without ramping the car up first.
Manufacturers address this with drop-end arms and low-profile telescoping arm designs that let the pad sit dramatically lower at the ends. On the commercial side, Rotary and Challenger both offer low-profile arm options across their asymmetric lines. The other half of the solution is asymmetric geometry, which rotates the columns so doors clear — a genuine daily-use benefit when technicians get in and out of a car twenty times during a diagnostic job. Combine low-profile drop-end arms with the right slotted adapters and a 2 post car lift handles a sports car cleanly. What does not work is a symmetric truck-oriented unit with tall fixed pads and then a stack of wood blocks to bridge the gap. We see that improvisation in shops and it makes us nervous every time.
Myth Five: More Capacity Is Always the Safer Choice
Buying up in capacity is usually smart, and we recommend it for fleet and truck work. For a European car specialist it is more nuanced. A 10,000 lb unit sized for pickups often comes with taller arm assemblies, longer reach designed for wide truck frames, and a lift point envelope that does not match a compact wheelbase well. Setting a 3,800 lb Audi A4 on arms designed for an F-250 means the pads land in awkward positions and the arms extend past where you want them.
The right capacity for a shop where the heaviest vehicle is a loaded X7 or a Cayenne is typically a 10,000 lb asymmetric unit — enough headroom for any passenger vehicle including electrics, without oversizing the geometry. Electric vehicles are worth a separate thought here, because a battery pack pushes a midsize sedan into the five-thousand-pound range and the manufacturer often designates lift points different from the equivalent gas model. Check the marque’s service documentation, not the technician’s memory. If your shop occasionally sees a Sprinter van, that is when you step up in capacity or add a second bay with a heavier unit rather than compromising the geometry of your main one. Myth Six: Installation Is Optional if You Have a Forklift
We get this request often. A buyer has a forklift, a helper, and a weekend, and wants the equipment shipped without install. For a home garage with a light unit and good concrete, that can work out fine, and we ship plenty of uninstalled orders. For a professional shop working on high-value cars, skipping certified installation is a false economy. Anchor torque, column plumb within manufacturer tolerance, lock synchronization, cable or chain equalization tension, hydraulic bleed, and functional testing under load are all specified in the manual, and every one of them is a thing we find wrong on self-installed lifts.
The most common defect we encounter is anchor bolts that were snugged with an impact gun rather than torqued to spec, which either under-clamps the base plate or spalls the concrete around the hole. Second most common is uneven lock engagement, where one column clicks a beat ahead of the other and the carriage runs slightly out of level under load. On a body shop truck nobody notices.
