Shops that primarily do oil changes and brakes put mild duty on a lift. Suspension and shock replacement is a different workload entirely. You are raising the vehicle, dropping it partway to get an angle on a control arm bolt, raising it again, sometimes lowering onto the arms while a spring compressor does its job. Here is the schedule we give production shops. Monthly: a visual walk-around with the lift raised to about chest height and again fully raised. Look for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, corrosion, birdcaging, and any strand riding out of a sheave groove. Run a shop rag along the cable — if it snags, you have a broken wire. Quarterly: check level. Raise the lift, put a tape measure from the floor to the same reference point on each carriage. More than a quarter inch of difference means the cables need re-tensioning. Also check that both lock ladders engage in the same position at the same height, because that is the cheapest early warning you get.
