It started with a tape measure and a model number the owner had scribbled on the back of a parts invoice. That’s the right way to start. Why a trailer and RV shop wanted a two-post at all
This shop’s bread and butter is seasonal work — pulling wheels and repacking bearings in April, dropping tanks and flushing lines in October, and storing customer units through the Iowa winter. Most of that happened on jack stands or on a portable set of ramps, which meant crews spent as much time positioning the vehicle as they did wrenching on it. The owner’s frustration wasn’t capacity. It was access. He wanted to stand upright underneath a tow vehicle, get to the frame rails and the underbody, and not fight a floor jack on a slab with a slight pitch toward the drain.
A four-post was the obvious first thought because of the storage angle, and we talked through it honestly. Four-post runways are great for parking and for wheels-on work, but they block the underside of the vehicle where the runways sit. For brake, suspension, exhaust, and driveline access, the two-post wins every time. Since roughly eighty percent of the work in that bay was underbody, we steered him toward a two-post and suggested he keep the ramps for storage stacking. That’s not us upselling — it’s the opposite. We talked him out of a more expensive machine because the cheaper one matched the work better. That’s how the first year of ownership starts well.
Reading the model numbers instead of the marketing copy
Every manufacturer has its own shorthand, and once you learn it, the catalog stops being confusing. Rotary’s SPO series tells you a lot in four characters — SPO10 and SPO12 are surface-mount, overhead-style two-post units at 10,000 and 12,000 pounds. Challenger’s CL10 and CL12 follow the same logic. BendPak’s XPR-10S means ten thousand pounds, symmetric. Add an A and you’re looking at asymmetric arms. Add a letter for clearfloor and the overhead beam disappears in favor of a floorplate.
The shop owner had “9LC” written down from an online listing and assumed it was a competitor to the 10,000 lb units. It wasn’t quite — that’s a nine-thousand-pound class machine, and while nine thousand pounds sounds like plenty for a half-ton truck, the margin evaporates fast when you add a topper, a toolbox, a full fuel tank, and a hitch-mounted rack. We told him what we tell everybody: buy capacity you’ll never fully use. The price gap between a 10,000 and a 12,000 lb machine is smaller than most people expect, and the 12,000 gives you taller columns and longer arms in most product lines. He ended up at a 12,000 lb unit for a shop whose heaviest regular vehicle was around 7,500 pounds. He has never once regretted the extra headroom.
Ceiling height, door height, and the number that actually kills deals
The single most common reason a lift order gets rewritten is ceiling height. This Marion building had a measured 13 feet 6 inches to the bottom of the joists, with a 14-foot overhead door. That’s comfortable for a clearfloor overhead unit, which typically wants 12 feet minimum and is happier with 13 or more. But the joists weren’t the constraint — a run of conduit and a couple of light fixtures were, and those sat about ten inches lower than the deck.
We always ask for the lowest obstruction, not the highest point of the ceiling. A sprinkler head, a gas line, a shop heater, a garage door track at full open — any one of those becomes the real ceiling. On this job we relocated two fixtures and moved a conduit run before the lift ever showed up, which took an afternoon and cost a fraction of what an ugly surprise on install day would have. If your ceiling is under about 12 feet, the answer is usually a baseplate model where the equalization cables and hoses run through a low floor channel instead of an overhead beam. Baseplate units are excellent — the only real tradeoff is that you drive over a shallow plate between the columns, which matters for very low ground clearance vehicles and almost nobody else.
Slab thickness: the spec nobody wants to check
Concrete is where a 2 post car lift install either works or gets postponed. Manufacturers publish a minimum, and for most 10,000 to 12,000 lb surface-mount units that’s roughly four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at minimum, with most engineers happier at 4.25 to 6 inches. The number in the manual is not a suggestion. Anchors need enough embedment and enough surrounding material to develop their holding strength, and a column that’s fighting several thousand pounds of overturning moment is not the place to guess.
This shop’s original slab was poured for trailer storage and came in at a solid six inches in the middle of the bay. But the pour near the old drain trench was thinner and cracked, and that happened to be exactly where the driver-side column wanted to sit. Rather than shift the lift and lose the drive-through alignment with the door, the owner had a pair of engineered footing pads cut and poured — a common fix that we recommend regularly. Two four-by-four-foot pads, tied in with rebar, cured for the manufacturer’s specified time, and the install proceeded normally. We’d rather delay a job three weeks for concrete than anchor into something marginal. Every one of us who has been in this trade long enough has seen what a pulled anchor looks like, and nobody wants to see it twice.
Symmetric or asymmetric: matching arms to the vehicle mix
Symmetric means the columns face each other directly and the arms are roughly the same length front and rear, putting the vehicle’s center of gravity right between the posts. Asymmetric rotates the columns about 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, which pushes the car back so the driver’s door clears the column. For a shop doing lots of interior access on sedans, asymmetric is a real quality-of-life improvement.
For this Marion shop, the vehicle mix was three-quarter-ton pickups, full-size vans, and the occasional dually — long wheelbases, heavy noses, and almost no interior work. Symmetric was the clear choice, because loading a long-wheelbase truck onto an asymmetric configuration means you either run out of front arm reach or you set the vehicle too far back for balance. We also spec’d the taller screw pad set and a couple of stackable adapters, because RV tow vehicles and lifted trucks routinely need three to six inches of extra pad height to reach a frame rail. Those adapters cost almost nothing next to the machine and get used on more than half of the lifts in that bay. If you’re building the order sheet for a 2 post car lift, put the adapter kit on it from day one rather than discovering the gap on your first heavy truck.
Install day, power, and the first 30 days
The install itself took most of a day. The columns came in on a flatbed and got set with a forklift the shop already owned, which saved a rigging charge — if you have a forklift or a skid steer with forks, tell your installer, because it changes the delivery plan. We laid out the column spacing against the drive-through centerline, drilled and set anchors to torque spec, hung the carriages, routed the equalization cable and the hydraulic line, filled the power unit, and cycled the lift a dozen times empty to purge air and confirm the carriages stayed level.
Power was the one item the shop had to hire out. Most single-phase two-post power units want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit, and this bay only had 110V convenience outlets. An electrician ran the circuit the week before delivery. During the first 30 days we asked the owner to do three things: check the hydraulic fluid level after the first ten cycles, verify both safety locks engage audibly and simultaneously at every height, and re-check anchor torque after the first week of real loads. All three passed. The one adjustment we made on a follow-up visit was tightening the equalization cable a quarter turn after the cables took their initial stretch — completely normal on a new machine, and something we’d rather do ourselves than have somebody guess at.
What the first year of service actually looked like
Twelve months in, the maintenance log on this 2 post car lift is boring, which is exactly what you want. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks, wipe and inspect the cables for broken strands or kinks, look at the arm restraint gears, and cycle the lift through full travel listening for the locks. Quarterly: check hydraulic fluid, inspect hoses at the fittings for weeping, and confirm anchor torque. Annually: a full inspection, which for a commercial shop in Iowa is also just good liability practice. The only unscheduled service call in year one was a slow drift — the lift would settle a half inch overnight with a truck on it. Nine times out of ten that’s a cylinder seal or a leaking check valve in the power unit, and this one was the check valve. A twenty-dollar part and an hour of labor. That’s the reality of two-post ownership: the failures are cheap and predictable if you catch them, and expensive only if you ignore them.
