Buying an auto lift is one of those purchases a collector thinks about for three years and then makes in an afternoon. We see it constantly around Ames: a guy with a half-finished 1968 project car, a 30×40 pole building, and a floor jack he is genuinely tired of crawling around. He calls us in February, we set the anchors in March, and by the following winter he cannot remember how he ever did floor pan work on jack stands. This article walks through exactly that first year of ownership — what install day looked like, how the financing terms and payment schedule shook out, what broke or loosened in the first twelve months, and what the first real service call actually covered.

The Shop, the Project Car, and Why He Finally Pulled the Trigger

The customer we are describing here is a composite of several central Iowa collectors, anonymized on purpose. Call him a retired ag equipment guy just outside Ames with four vehicles and space for two. His shop is a 30×40 pole building, concrete floor, twelve-foot sidewalls — which is close to the most common building we quote in this state. He wanted to store one car up and park another underneath, and he wanted to do serious metal work: floor pans, rocker panels, a trans crossmember he had been putting off since 2019.

What finally moved him was a rust repair job. He spent six hours on his back with a wire wheel, got about eighteen inches of clean metal, and decided that was enough of that. When he called us he already knew he needed roughly 7,000 lb of capacity — his heaviest vehicle is a three-quarter-ton pickup that scales just under 6,400 lb wet. We talked him through the tradeoff most collectors face: a four-post gives you stacked storage and a drive-on ramp, but a two-post gives you open wheels for suspension and brake work. For a restoration guy doing body panels and bearings, that is not a small distinction, and we spent the better part of a phone call on it before quoting anything.

Choosing Capacity and Layout for Restoration and Metal Work

He ended up with a 9,000 lb four-post storage model plus a set of rolling bridge jacks. The extra capacity over 7,000 lb cost him surprisingly little and gave him headroom for the truck without thinking about it. The bridge jacks were the compromise that made the metal work possible — with the deck raised and the jacks under the frame, he can drop the wheels off and still have a stable platform underneath for a creeper and a light.

Layout is where most Iowa collectors get bitten. Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you add a raised deck, a car roof, and a garage door track. We measured his actual clear height at the truss bottom chord — 11 feet 8 inches — and worked backward. That gave him enough to store a low sedan up top with a pickup below, but not enough to store the pickup up top. He was fine with that once he understood it. We also moved his planned position four feet north so the ramps did not dump into his overhead door swing, and so his air drops and a 220v circuit landed near the power unit instead of thirty feet away. That single conversation saved him an electrician trip. This is the part of buying a lift that nobody puts in a catalog, and it is why we would rather talk to you before you check out.

Financing Terms and the Payment Schedule He Actually Signed

Money is the part people are shyest about asking, so let us be plain. Most home-shop collectors we work with fall into one of three tiers. Tier one is cash or a card at checkout — simplest, no paperwork, and it is what maybe half of our residential buyers do for a mid-capacity four-post. Tier two is third-party equipment financing, typically 24 to 60 months, with a modest down payment and fixed monthly installments. Tier three is a home equity line, which some folks prefer because the rate is often better and the shop is part of the property anyway.

Our collector went the 36-month equipment financing route. The structure was a deposit at order to lock the unit and freight, the balance financed, and first payment due about thirty days after delivery — meaning the lift was installed and earning its keep before a single installment came out. Freight and install were rolled into the financed amount, which we recommend, because a surprise freight bill after the fact is what sours people on a purchase they otherwise love. One thing worth knowing: rates and terms move, and approval depends on your credit profile and whether you are buying as an individual or a business. Business buyers frequently do better and can often depreciate the equipment. We are not your accountant, but we will happily get you a written quote you can hand to one.

Install Day: Anchors, Concrete, and the 220v Question

Install on a four-post is less concrete-dependent than a two-post, but it is not concrete-indifferent. His slab was a nominal 4-inch pour with no visible cracking or heaving, which is adequate for a four-post whose load spreads across four baseplates. If he had wanted a two-post, we would have been talking core samples and probably a 6-inch by 6-foot reinforced pad. That difference is real money, and it is one reason storage-capable four-posts are so popular in Iowa pole buildings.

The 220v question comes up on nearly every call we take. Most single-phase power units on residential lifts want 220v single phase on a dedicated circuit — usually a 20 or 30 amp breaker depending on the motor. Some smaller units will run on 110v, slower and with a lower duty cycle, and a few customers genuinely prefer that to hiring an electrician. Our collector already had a 220v welder circuit in the shop, so we positioned the power unit within reach of it and he had a licensed electrician add a dedicated receptacle the week before we showed up. Total install day was about four and a half hours including leveling the runways, cycling the unit a dozen times, checking cable tension on all four corners, and walking him through the safety locks until he could set and release them without looking. We do not leave until the owner can operate the thing confidently.

Months One Through Six: Break-In, Cable Stretch, and Small Annoyances

New lifts settle. Within the first fifty cycles, equalizer cables stretch slightly and the deck can go a hair out of level corner to corner. That is normal, not a defect, and it is the single most common warranty-adjacent call we get. He noticed the front passenger corner sitting about a quarter inch low around week five. We walked him through the adjustment over the phone in ten minutes — it is a nut on a cable end, not surgery — and it has stayed put since.

His other early annoyances were mundane. The ramps were louder than he expected coming off the deck, solved with a little grease on the pivot. He wished he had ordered the drip trays with the lift instead of three months later, because shipping them separately cost more than adding them to the original freight. And he learned the hard way that a lift is a magnet for clutter: within two months there was a parts washer under the raised deck, which is exactly where you do not want a parts washer when you need to lower a car in a hurry. We tell every home-shop buyer the same thing — decide now what lives under the lift and keep it to things on wheels. Beyond that, the first six months were uneventful, which is what you want from a piece of hydraulic equipment holding a car over your head.

The First Annual Service Call on His Auto Lift

At around the eleven-month mark we came back out for the first annual inspection. This is the service call people skip and should not, because on a storage unit the failure mode nobody sees coming is a cable that has been under load for a year in an unheated building. Our checklist covered cable condition and tension at all four corners, sheave wear, lock engagement at every position, hydraulic fluid level and condition, hose and fitting inspection, anchor and baseplate check, and a full loaded cycle test.

What we found was ordinary and worth repeating. The hydraulic fluid was slightly low — not leaking, just settled and topped off during the initial fill before air worked out of the system. One cable end was a touch loose again, which is common after the first year of thermal cycling in an Iowa shop that swings from 15 degrees in January to 95 in July. The safety locks were clean and engaging crisply. We greased the sheaves, wiped the runways, and replaced one worn rubber ramp stop. Total time on site was under two hours. He asked what an annual inspection typically runs and we gave him the same answer we give everyone: a routine residential inspection sits at the low end of our service rates, and it is dramatically cheaper than a cable replacement caused by a year of neglect. What We Would Tell the Next Collector Buying an Auto Lift

Twelve months in, this owner’s verdict was simple: he would buy the same auto lift again, and he would order the accessories with it the first time. That is the summary of nearly every first-year review we collect from home-shop customers. The equipment itself rarely disappoints. What disappoints people is buying on capacity alone and discovering later that the ceiling is two inches short, or the power unit is on the wrong wall, or the four-post cannot do the suspension job they actually wanted to do.

So here is our short list. Measure your real clear height at the lowest obstruction, not the sidewall. Decide honestly whether you are storing cars or working on them, because that answers four-post versus two-post faster than any spec sheet. Get the electrical sorted before delivery, not during install. Roll freight and install into your financed amount so there are no surprise invoices. Add drip trays, bridge jacks, and casters to the original order. And schedule the first annual service before you forget it exists.
