Automotive two post lifts change a garage more than any other single purchase, and we watched that play out over a full year with a collector’s shop down on the Iowa-Missouri border. He had six vehicles, four of them stored long-term, a 40×60 building with a loft on one side, and a habit of doing his own brake and bearing work on jack stands at fifty-two years old. He called us in the spring, we set the anchors in early summer, and by the following spring he had run everything from a wheel bearing replacement on a three-quarter-ton to a full fluid service on a low-slung project car. This is what that first year actually looked like, including the parts we would do differently.

Why He Picked a Two-Post Over Another Four-Post

He already owned a four-post storage lift, which is the part that surprises people. The four-post held a car year-round and did that job well, but it was useless for the work he actually wanted to do. Wheels stayed loaded on the runways, the rolling jack he had was a hassle for one man to reposition, and suspension work meant crawling between runways with a light in his teeth. He wanted wheels-free access with nothing under the car, and that is exactly the gap two-post equipment fills.

We talked him through the tradeoff honestly. Storage capacity is the thing you give up. A two-post is not a parking structure, and while plenty of collectors do leave a vehicle up on one, we tell people not to plan their storage math around it. What he gained was a bay where he could pull all four wheels in ten minutes, spin hubs by hand, and get a torque wrench square on a fastener without lying on concrete. For a guy whose main frustration was access rather than square footage, that was the right trade. His second vehicle still lives on the four-post, and the two-post stays clear for whatever is on the bench that week. Six vehicles, two lifts, one building, and the workflow finally made sense instead of fighting itself.

Bay Layout: The Loft Wall Decided Everything

His building had a hay-loft style storage deck running down the left side at about ten feet, and a finished wall with electrical on the right. That single detail eliminated half the catalog. An overhead two-post needs clean vertical space for the crossbar and the equalization cables, and his loft cut into that on one side. We laid out a baseplate configuration instead, which runs the hydraulic lines and cables through a low channel across the floor between the columns.

Baseplate models get a bad reputation from people who have tripped over one, and we understand that. You do have a bump at floor level, and if you roll a transmission jack across it constantly you will notice. But the ceiling freedom is worth a lot in a building that was never designed as a shop. We set his columns for a 12-foot 2-inch bay width with the drive-through clearance he needed for a full-size pickup, kept the control column on the side away from the loft ladder, and left eight feet of walkway behind the rear of the bay for a rolling cart. A year in, he has moved the cart twice and the layout has not fought him once. That is what a good afternoon of planning buys you.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Test We Always Run

Concrete is where most conversations about automotive two post lifts get uncomfortable, because the honest answer is often “we need to check.” He believed his slab was six inches. We cored a test spot and found five and a quarter with decent aggregate and no rebar where we needed to anchor, which put him just inside spec for the 10,000 lb unit he wanted. Had it come back at four inches, we would have been pouring pads, and that is a real cost that people never budget for.

We see this constantly with pole buildings put up in the last twenty years. The slab was poured for parking and storage, not for concentrated anchor loads, and the pour thickness varies across the floor by more than an inch in some buildings. Anchor bolts pull against that concrete every time a vehicle goes up. Under-spec concrete does not fail dramatically on day one; it works loose over months, the column starts to show a hairline gap at the base, and then you have a problem you cannot see from across the shop. We torqued his anchors to the manufacturer spec, marked them with paint witness lines, and told him to eyeball those marks monthly. Twelve months later they had not moved. That is the outcome you want, and it starts with a core sample instead of a guess.

The First Real Job: A Wheel Bearing on a Three-Quarter-Ton

Three weeks after install he had a growling front hub on his tow truck. He called us mostly to say thanks, because the job that had previously eaten a Saturday took him under two hours. That is not a marketing claim, it is just what happens when a hub assembly is at chest height instead of eight inches off a garage floor.

Wheel bearing work is the perfect argument for wheels-free lifting. You need the wheel off, you need to spin the hub to confirm the noise source, you need room to swing a long breaker bar on the axle nut, and on some trucks you need to fight a hub that is rust-welded into the knuckle. Doing that on jack stands means the vehicle is barely off the ground, your leverage is terrible, and you are working against gravity in every direction. Up on the arms, he set the pad height, put the truck at forty-two inches, and worked standing. The old hub came out with a slide hammer he could actually swing. He mentioned that he caught a torn CV boot on the other side while he was in there, which he would never have spotted crawling around underneath. That is the quiet benefit nobody sells you on: you see more of the vehicle, so you catch things earlier.

Capacity, Arms, and Matching the Lift to Your Actual Fleet

He asked about a 14,000 lb model early on, and we talked him out of it. His heaviest vehicle was the tow truck at roughly 8,400 pounds curb weight. A 10,000 lb unit handled it with margin, cost meaningfully less, and needed less ceiling. Buying capacity you will never use is the most common overspend we see in this category, right alongside buying too little and regretting it within a year. The honest test is simple: find your heaviest vehicle’s actual weight, add a comfortable buffer, and stop there.

Arm configuration mattered more than capacity for his mix. He had a lowered project car with about four inches of ground clearance and a set of pinch welds that would not tolerate a tall pad. Standard arms with standard adapters would not slide under it. We specified asymmetric columns with three-stage front arms and a low-profile pad kit, which let him get under the sports car and still reach the frame rails on the truck without stretching. Adapter stacks, truck adapters, and frame extensions are cheap compared to the lift itself, and they are what make one set of columns work across a mixed collection. If you own vehicles that span a 30-year range, spend the extra on adapters before you spend it on capacity. He uses three different pad heights depending on what is in the bay, and the whole kit lives in a milk crate on the wall.

What Maintenance Actually Looked Like Over Twelve Months

Owners always want to know what upkeep costs in time. For him, the honest answer for year one was about ninety minutes total, spread across the year. He checked hydraulic fluid twice, greased the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins, wiped and inspected the equalization cables, and tested the safety locks by lowering onto them from a few different heights. That is it.

The one thing we push hard on is cables. On any cable-equalized two-post, the equalization cable is the component that quietly ages while nobody looks at it. You inspect for broken strands, kinks, fraying at the sheaves, and slack that has developed unevenly between columns. If one column travels visibly ahead of the other, you have a cable adjustment problem, not a cosmetic one. He found a small amount of drift around month eight, we walked him through the tensioning procedure over the phone, and it took him fifteen minutes. Beyond that: keep the floor around the columns clean, do not let dirt and brake dust build up in the arm pivots, and pay attention to lock engagement sound. A lock that clicks crisply into every notch is telling you it is healthy. A lock that clunks softly or skips a notch is telling you to call somebody. We stock the wear parts for every major brand, so replacement is a phone call and a couple of days, not a special order that takes a month.

What We Would Change About This Install

Two things. First, we would have run the electrical differently. His power unit sits on the control column and we tied it into an existing circuit at the back wall, which meant a conduit run he later wished was on the other side when he reorganized his benches. Power feed location is easy to get right at install and annoying to change afterward, so think about where your benches will be in three years, not where they are today.

Second, we would have discussed floor drainage before we set anchors. His shop slopes very slightly toward the overhead door, which is good building practice, but it means his columns are not perfectly plumb to each other on the natural grade. We shimmed them correctly and everything is in spec, but a half-inch of slope across a twelve-foot span is something to identify before the hammer drill comes out rather than during. That is the general lesson from a year of watching this setup work: automotive two post lifts are simple machines that reward planning and punish assumptions.
