A truck shop owner in southwest Iowa called us last winter with a problem we hear a lot: he had three service bays, a stack of one-ton diesels waiting on brake and driveline work, and a fourth bay he was using to store a customer’s classic through the cold months. He wanted to know which of the automotive two post lifts on the market would handle a dually with a service body while still being useful for the seasonal storage side of his business. That is a fair question, and the honest answer is that model numbers matter more than marketing copy. We walked him through the spec sheets column by column, then built a cost breakdown that included freight, concrete verification, and install labor — not just the sticker on the lift.

Why Capacity Alone Is the Wrong Way to Shop

The first thing most buyers do is pick a number — 10,000 lb, 12,000 lb, 15,000 lb — and start filtering. We understand the instinct, but capacity is only one of about six specs that determine whether a lift actually works in your building. A 12,000 lb lift with a narrow column spread will not clear the mirrors on a crew-cab pickup. A 15,000 lb unit with short front arms will not reach the frame pickup points on a body-on-frame truck without adapters stacked three high. And a lift rated for 18,000 lb that needs 14 feet of ceiling is useless under a 12-foot sidewall.

For the southwest Iowa shop, the heaviest thing rolling through the door was a 9,900 lb GVWR one-ton with a utility bed. That does not require an 18,000 lb machine. It requires a 12,000 to 15,000 lb lift with a wide column spread — 12 feet or more between posts — and asymmetric or three-stage front arms that swing under a long wheelbase. When we compare automotive two post lifts for truck work, we start with the widest vehicle he services, then the longest, then the heaviest, in that order. Weight is usually the easiest spec to satisfy. Geometry is what sends lifts back on a freight truck.

Model-by-Model: Rotary and Challenger Spec Comparison

On the commercial side we stock and install Rotary and Challenger, and those two brands cover almost every heavy-duty scenario we run into. The Rotary SPO12 family is the workhorse — 12,000 lb capacity, clearfloor overhead design, and a column spread that handles full-size trucks comfortably. Step up to the SPOA series and you get asymmetric arms designed to shift the vehicle rearward so doors open freely, which matters more in a storage bay than a service bay. For genuinely heavy work, the Rotary 15,000 lb and 18,000 lb two-post units use taller columns, heavier carriages, and longer arm sets rated for medium-duty chassis.

Challenger’s CL10 and CL12 lines are our value play when a shop wants a solid commercial lift without the top-tier price. The CL12 gives you 12,000 lb with a generous drive-through width, and Challenger’s E-series versions add extended columns for taller vehicles. Where Challenger really earns its keep is in the 15,000 lb and heavier PKS-style configurations for fleet and municipal shops. When we lay these automotive two post lifts side by side on a spec sheet, the differences come down to arm design, carriage travel speed, and how the overhead versus baseplate decision interacts with your ceiling and your door opening. Overhead Versus Baseplate: The Decision That Drives Everything Else

An overhead lift runs its equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a beam across the top of the columns. It gives you a completely clear floor, which is a real advantage when you are rolling transmission jacks, oil drains, and creepers around all day. The trade-off is the height requirement: most overhead two-post units need 12 to 14 feet of clear ceiling depending on the column height and beam design, and the beam itself sets a maximum vehicle height you can drive under.

A baseplate lift routes everything through a channel at floor level. That drops the ceiling requirement dramatically — we have put baseplate units in buildings with 10-foot sidewalls — and it removes the overhead beam so you can lift a tall van or a box truck to full height. A customer up in North Dakota called us specifically because he could not do an overhead in his building and needed a baseplate unit under a 139-inch maximum height. The downside is that floor plate you now have to drive over and work around. For the southwest Iowa truck shop, we went overhead in two bays and baseplate in the third, where he stores vehicles under a lower section of roof. Mixing configurations across bays is common and nobody should feel like they need to pick one style for the whole building.

Seasonal Storage: What Changes When a Car Sits for Six Months

Storage duty is different from service duty, and it changes which specs matter. If a vehicle is going to sit in the air from November through April, you want a lift with a mechanical lock system you trust, a hydraulic circuit that holds without creep, and arm restraints that positively engage rather than relying on friction. Every quality two-post lift has multiple lock positions along the column; what you want to confirm is that the locks engage audibly and that the lift is designed to rest on steel, not on hydraulic pressure, once you lower it onto a lock.

We tell storage customers to set the vehicle on a lock every time, without exception, and to check the hydraulic fluid level and cable tension at the start and end of each storage season. A slow leak that would be an annoyance in a service bay becomes a real hazard when nobody is looking at the lift for weeks. One customer in Missouri told us plainly that he needed “anything that won’t drop a car” — that is the right instinct. The answer is a properly installed lift, a torque check on the anchors, an annual inspection, and the discipline to always seat the locks. The Real Cost Breakdown: Lift, Freight, Concrete, Install

Here is where a lot of quotes fall apart. The lift price you see online is the lift, on a truck, at a dock. For the southwest Iowa job, the total project broke into four buckets. The lift itself, for a commercial 12,000 lb overhead unit from Rotary or Challenger, lands in the mid-four-figure to low-five-figure range depending on brand, arm configuration, and options like extended columns or air lines. Freight on a two-post lift is significant — these ship on a flatbed or in a crate and typically run several hundred dollars, more if you need liftgate service or a residential delivery.

Concrete is the wild card. If your slab is documented at 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI or better with proper cure, you anchor and go. If it is thinner, cracked, or unknown, you are looking at cutting and pouring footings — usually a few thousand dollars for a pair of pads depending on your concrete contractor. Install labor for a standard two-post runs a day for our crew, and that includes anchoring, plumbing the hydraulics, wiring to the power unit, cable adjustment, load testing, and a walkthrough with your techs. Budget in a range rather than a single number, and always ask whether a quoted price includes the electrical hookup — many do not. Power, Air, and the Utilities Nobody Budgets For

Most two-post power units are available in single-phase 208-230V or three-phase, and the choice affects both the unit price and your electrician’s bill. Single-phase is what the vast majority of independent shops and home garages use, and a 20 to 30 amp dedicated circuit handles it. Three-phase units are quieter, draw less current, and are worth it if you already have three-phase service in the building. What you do not want to do is buy a three-phase power unit and discover your building is single-phase, or run a lift off an undersized circuit and cook the motor over a couple of seasons.

Air is the other utility people forget. Almost every commercial two-post lift uses shop air to release the mechanical locks, which means you need a regulated air line at the column. If your compressor is at the far end of the building, factor in the run. We also recommend an air drop at the lift for impact guns and blowguns while you are at it — you are already running the line. For the truck shop we did in southwest Iowa, the electrical and air work was roughly a tenth of the total project cost, which is small but nonzero, and it is the kind of thing that turns a one-day install into a two-day install if it is not ready when we arrive. Have the circuit pulled and the air stubbed before the delivery truck shows up.

How We Spec a Lift Over the Phone

What are your ceiling height and door header height? How thick is your slab, and do you know the PSI or have the pour documented? Is there radiant heat in the floor? Single-phase or three-phase power? Are you doing service work, storage, or both? That is usually enough to narrow the field to two or three models.

The point of comparing automotive two post lifts by model number rather than by price is that the right unit will serve you for twenty years and the wrong one will annoy you every single day.
