Why Restoration Work Punishes a Lift Differently

A quick-lube bay raises a vehicle, holds it four minutes, and sets it down. A restoration bay raises a shell and leaves it there for three weeks. That difference matters more than most buyers realize. Hydraulic systems are designed to hold load, but the mechanical safety locks are what actually carry the weight over long dwell times, and every rack-and-pawl engagement point sees repeated impact loading when a body man leans into a panel with a grinder or a slide hammer. On the Marion units, the lock ladders on one column had visible peening at the third and fourth positions — the two heights the crew used constantly — while the top of the ladder looked factory new.

Then there is the metal work itself. Welding spatter lands on hydraulic hoses and cable sheathing. Grinding dust migrates into the carriage rollers and turns into an abrasive paste once it mixes with slide grease. Media blasting is worse; we have pulled columns apart and found silica packed behind the roller shoes. None of that shows up on a walk-by inspection. It shows up as uneven column travel two years later, and by then you are chasing a symptom instead of a cause. If your bay does cutting, welding, or blasting, the maintenance interval that came in the manual is not the interval you should be running.

Overhead vs. Baseplate When You Are Working Tall

The first real decision on any two-post purchase is whether the equalization runs across the top or through the floor. For restoration and metal work, we lean toward overhead more often than people expect, and the reasoning is not about the vehicle — it is about the floor. Baseplate models put a steel channel between the columns at ground level, and when you are rolling a floor jack, an engine hoist, a parts cart, and a welding cart in and out of that bay forty times a day, that channel becomes a daily annoyance and eventually a trip hazard. Crews start stepping over it without looking.

Overhead has its own trade-off: the crossbar limits your working height. That Marion shop had 13-foot ceilings, which is comfortable, but plenty of Iowa buildings run 11 feet or less and a tall van or an ambulance body will find the shutoff bar. We have had customers with a hard 139-inch maximum height come to us convinced they needed baseplate, and they were right. The honest answer is that ceiling height decides it more than preference does. Measure to the lowest obstruction — not the peak, not the truss, the lowest conduit run or light fixture — and tell us that number. Concrete, Anchors, and the Thing People Skip

We ask about the slab on every single call, and roughly a third of the time the answer is a guess. “Probably five inches, maybe less.” That is not good enough for equipment that is going to hold a vehicle over a person’s head. Most two-post units in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and some heavier models want more. But thickness is only half the spec — cure strength, reinforcement, and edge distance from control joints all matter. An anchor set two inches from a saw cut is an anchor that will eventually pull a cone of concrete out with it.

Core sampling is cheap insurance. We can drill a small test hole, measure actual depth, and see what is under the slab before anyone commits. On the Marion job, the original 1980s pour turned out to be a full six inches in the bay area and three and a half near the overhead door, which explained why one column had always felt slightly softer on the way up. The fix was a cut-and-pour pad under that column — a day of work and a weekend of cure time, and the problem was gone permanently. That is the kind of thing you want to find during a site survey, not during a torque check three years into ownership. The Daily and Monthly Inspection That Actually Gets Done

Written inspection programs fail because they are too long. If your checklist has thirty items, your techs will sign it without reading it. We build two lists instead. The daily one has four items and takes ninety seconds: listen for both locks to click at every stop, look at the arm restraint pins for full engagement, glance under the columns for fresh fluid, and confirm the lowering handle returns to neutral on its own. That is it. A tech can do that while the coffee finishes.

The monthly list is where the real work lives — cable tension, sheave condition, hydraulic fluid level, hose chafe points, anchor bolt torque, and a full-travel cycle with no load listening for hesitation. Cable tension is the one people botch. Equalization cables on two-post units are not lifting cables; they synchronize the carriages. When they stretch unevenly, one side leads the other, the carriages bind slightly, and wear accelerates on the low side. We show crews how to check it with a straightedge across both carriages at mid-travel — if the gap is more than about an eighth of an inch, it is time to adjust. Arms, Adapters, and Lifting a Vehicle That Has No Pinch Weld Left

Restoration is the one application where the standard lift point rules stop applying. A car that has been on a lift for a body-off restoration frequently has rusted-through rockers, cut-out floor pans, and no factory jacking points worth trusting. We have seen shops solve this badly — a 2×4 across the arm pads, a stack of hockey pucks, a chunk of angle iron. Every one of those is a load path nobody engineered.

The right answer is frame cradles and truck adapters, matched to the arm. Most manufacturers offer stackable adapters and drop-in frame contact pads that keep the load centered over the arm pin rather than cantilevered off the edge of a pad. For unibody shells with the floor cut out, a dedicated cradle spanning to solid structure is the only defensible approach, and it is worth building one properly if you do this work regularly. Low-profile arms deserve a mention too — if you are pulling in a lowered project car or something sitting on flat tires, three-stage front arms with a short retracted length make the difference between getting under it and pushing it back outside. What a Municipal Shop Should Ask Before Signing

Public-sector buyers have obligations a private shop does not — procurement rules, documented inspection records, and often an annual third-party certification requirement. Before you sign anything, confirm the model is ALI certified and that the certification covers the exact configuration you are buying, including capacity and arm package. Ask for the installation checklist the installer will complete and file. Ask who performs your annual inspection and what it costs, because an inspection contract you cannot get serviced locally is a liability on paper only.

Ask about lead time honestly, too. We would rather tell a fleet manager that a specific column configuration is ten weeks out than promise four and disappoint. And ask what happens at year twelve — whether the manufacturer has a track record of parts support, whether the installer will still be around, whether there is a local tech who can come out on a Tuesday. Those questions are worth more than a two percent price difference.
