Month One: The Building Decided the Configuration
He called us in January with a tape measure in hand and a pole building that had 13 feet of clear height at the trusses. That is comfortable overhead territory on paper. The problem was the building’s insulated ceiling panels and a row of shop lights strung down the center of the bay he wanted to use — the true clear height under the fixtures was closer to 11 feet 2 inches. An overhead crossbar would have fit, barely, but full rise on a tall vehicle would have put the roof of a Suburban uncomfortably close to the beam. Collectors do not enjoy “barely.”
We talked through the baseplate alternative. On a baseplate two-post the hoses and equalization cables run through a low channel between the column bases instead of across the top, which removes the overhead obstruction entirely and gives you unlimited height above the vehicle. The tradeoff is that floor channel — a raised strip you cross every time you push a creeper, a transmission jack, or a parts cart into the bay. For a shop doing forty cars a day, that hump is an annoyance. For a collector working on one car for a week at a time, it is nothing. He went baseplate. A year later, that call still looks correct. Month Two: Concrete, Anchors, and a Surprise Under the Slab
The building was fifteen years old and the original contractor had poured a nominal five-inch slab. We drilled test holes in the two anchor footprints before ordering. The driver’s-side location came back at five and a quarter inches of solid concrete. The other side came back at four inches with a soft pocket about three inches down — likely a bad consolidation during the pour. That is exactly the kind of thing that never announces itself until an anchor pulls under load.
The fix was straightforward and worth every hour it took: saw-cut a four-by-four-foot section, break it out, dig down, and pour a new pad ten inches deep with rebar tied into the surrounding slab. Twenty-eight days of cure time before anchoring, which in a Minnesota February means keeping a heated blanket over it. He was frustrated by the delay. He was not frustrated the following December when he had a loaded car in the air. Anchor integrity is the entire safety story on a two-post, and no amount of column quality compensates for a slab that will not hold. Month Three: Installation Day and Getting the Columns Plumb
Install took a day and a half. Setting the columns and running the anchors is the fast part. Getting both columns plumb within spec on a floor that slopes a quarter-inch across the bay took most of an afternoon and a stack of shims under one base. The baseplate channel added a step — it has to sit flat and square between the bases, and if the floor crowns in the middle you end up shimming the channel too so the cables track without rubbing.
Cable tensioning came next. Equalization cables are what keep the two carriages rising together, and getting them evenly tensioned is more feel than formula. We ran the lift empty through twenty full cycles, re-tensioned, cycled again, and bled the hydraulics by holding at full rise. The safety locks got tested at every position on the way up and the way down — you want to hear all of them engage cleanly. He asked whether he could have done the install himself. Honestly, a mechanically competent person with a rotary hammer and a helper can do it. What he would not have had is the torque wrench calibration, the experience to recognize a marginal anchor set, and a phone number to call when something reads wrong. For a building full of vehicles he cares about, that was worth paying for.
Months Four Through Eight: Storage, Rotation, and Daily Use
A collector uses a two-post differently than a technician does. His pattern became: raise a car to about chest height, work on it for a few days, lower it, roll it out, bring in the next one. The unobstructed overhead from the baseplate configuration turned out to matter for a reason he had not anticipated — he could get a car high enough to walk under fully upright, in a building with a ceiling that would have limited an overhead model. For a guy in his sixties with a bad knee, standing up straight under a car is not a luxury.
One thing he learned the hard way: a two-post is not a storage lift. He asked early on about parking one car up and another underneath. We told him no, and we tell everyone no. Two-posts hold vehicles by the frame or pinch welds on four arms, and they are not designed or rated for unattended long-term loading. If storage stacking is the goal, that is a four-post conversation — a drive-on platform, a rated parking configuration, and optional caster kits so you can reposition it. He ended up adding a four-post on the far end of the building the following year for exactly that purpose, and the two split duties cleanly: service on the two-post, storage on the four. Month Nine: The Transmission Service That Justified Everything
The job that made the whole purchase worth it was a transmission service on a big-block muscle car that had been sitting for two seasons. Fluid was dark, the pan gasket was seeping, and the filter had never been changed under his ownership. On jack stands that job is a miserable afternoon of contorting yourself under a car with a drain pan on your chest. On the two-post he raised the car to a comfortable working height, put a transmission jack under the case, and had the pan off in twenty minutes.
The baseplate channel came up once — he had to bump the transmission jack over it getting into the bay. Ten seconds of annoyance against hours of comfort. What actually mattered was arm positioning. Getting a transmission jack squarely under the case requires the lift arms to be out of the way, and on an asymmetric two-post with three-stage front arms he had room to work. He also discovered what everyone discovers: fluid drips travel. Put cardboard down, because ATF on a garage floor does not come up. Month Twelve: Maintenance, Wear Items, and What We Told Him to Watch
At the one-year mark we walked him through an annual inspection, which is what ANSI recommends and what any insurance carrier will ask about if something ever goes wrong. The checklist is not long. Inspect the equalization cables end to end for broken strands, fraying near the sheaves, or corrosion — cables are the number one wear item we ship. Check sheave bearings for free rotation. Look at the slide blocks inside the columns; they are consumable and cheap, and worn blocks let the carriage rack. Verify anchor torque with a wrench, not by eye. Cycle every safety lock and listen for clean engagement.
Hydraulically, check the fluid level with the lift fully lowered, look for weeping at the cylinder rod seals and the hose fittings, and confirm the lift holds position with a load on it for several minutes without creeping down. Creep almost always means a leaking check valve or a cylinder seal, and both are repairable — nobody should be replacing a column over a seal kit. Lubricate the arm pivot pins and the carriage rollers. Grease the lock latches so they do not stick. In an unheated southern Minnesota building, condensation is the quiet enemy, so wipe the column interiors and keep a light film of oil on bare steel. First, measuring clear height under the actual obstructions rather than at the trusses — that single measurement pushed him to baseplate and gave him a lift he can fully use rather than one that fits on paper. Second, drilling test holes in the concrete before ordering anything. The bad pocket in that slab would have been discovered eventually, and discovering it during install is dramatically better than discovering it under load. Third, being honest about what the lift was for. Service, not storage. Once he accepted that, the equipment choices got simple.
If you are a collector shopping right now, resist the pull toward the biggest capacity number. A 10,000-pound two-post covers essentially every classic, muscle car, truck, and modern SUV a private collection is likely to hold, and going higher mostly buys you heavier columns and a bigger footprint. Spend the difference on good arm adapters instead — tall stackable pads for frame-on-frame vehicles, low-profile pads for cars with three inches of ground clearance, and a set of truck adapters if a pickup lives in the building.
