A weekend mechanic in east-central Iowa called us last spring about a car lift he’d already paid for. It was sitting on a pallet in his driveway, the freight company was gone, and he’d just measured his ceiling for the first time — nine feet two inches under the garage door track. He wanted to do CV axle and half-shaft work on a couple of front-drive daily drivers and his son’s Subaru, which is exactly the kind of job that needs real wheels-free access. The equipment he bought couldn’t fit the building. That whole mess is avoidable with a site survey done before the order goes in, and this is the checklist we use.

Start With a Drawing, Not a Shopping Cart

Before you look at a single product page, sketch your shop. Overall interior dimensions, sidewall height, where the overhead door is and which way it swings or rolls, where the door track and opener rail sit, where the electrical panel is, where the water heater and furnace live, and where the control joints run in the slab. Hand-drawn on graph paper is fine. What matters is that the numbers are measured, not remembered.

The reason we push this so hard is that almost every install problem we get called out for traces back to a measurement nobody took. A 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls is a dream space and will accept nearly anything. A standard attached two-car garage with a 9-foot ceiling and a sagging opener rail is a much narrower field. When you have the drawing, the equipment selection gets easy instead of hopeful. Note obstructions at height too: light fixtures, ceiling fans, exposed trusses, radiant tube heaters. Radiant tube heat in particular is common in Iowa shops and it usually runs right where an overhead beam wants to go. Moving a tube heater is doable but it’s a separate contractor and a separate cost, and it’s much cheaper to plan around it than to discover it on install day with a crew standing there.

The Concrete Question You Have to Answer First

Concrete determines what you can anchor. Certified two-post equipment generally calls for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi cured concrete, often more depending on capacity, and it has to be reinforced and away from edges and joints. Plenty of residential and older commercial slabs in east-central Iowa were poured thinner than that, or poured in sections with joints exactly where a column needs to land.

Verify, don’t assume. If you have the original pour spec or the contractor is still around, great. If not, we core-drill a small test hole and measure. It’s a quick, cheap step that either confirms you’re clear or tells you to plan a footing. When the slab is short, the standard remedy is saw-cutting a pad at each column location, digging out, and pouring a properly sized reinforced footing. That’s routine work, but it needs cure time, so it belongs in the schedule ahead of the delivery date rather than after. Also check for radiant floor heat lines before anyone drills. We’ve been on jobs where PEX in the slab was discovered the hard way, and a hobbyist who spent good money on in-floor heat does not enjoy that conversation. Bring the drawing of the loop layout if you have it, or scan the area first. Slope matters too: a floor that drains toward a center drain can put columns out of plumb, which is why shimming is part of a proper install.

Power, Air, and the Utilities Nobody Budgets

Most single-phase hydraulic power units want a dedicated 220V circuit sized to the motor. Some smaller home units run on 110V, but they’re slower and they draw hard on startup. Commercial three-phase equipment is a different conversation entirely and usually requires panel work. Whatever you choose, decide where the power unit will mount and make sure a circuit can reach it without a garden-hose-length extension cord, which we still see more often than we should.

Get an electrician involved during the planning phase. The question to ask isn’t just “can you run a 220 line” but “what’s the shortest safe path, and does my panel have capacity.” In a lot of older Iowa garages fed by a small subpanel off the house, the answer is that the subpanel needs an upgrade first. Better to learn that in week one. Air is the other utility. Many two-post units use shop air to release the locks, and while most have a manual override, running a dedicated air drop to a lift column makes daily use far less annoying. Also think about lighting. Once a vehicle is at working height it shadows the whole bay, and doing CV axle work by flashlight is no fun. Plan a couple of fixtures positioned to light the underside, or budget for a good rechargeable underhood light. These are small items that dramatically change how much you enjoy the space.

Choosing a Car Lift for CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work

Job type drives configuration more than capacity does. CV axle and half-shaft replacement needs the wheels hanging free, room to swing a big axle nut socket and a breaker bar, and clearance to pull the shaft out toward you without fighting a runway or a support arm. That points hard toward a two-post design, where the vehicle is supported at the frame or pinch welds and all four corners are wide open.

If your ceiling won’t take a two-post, the workable alternatives are a four-post with rolling jacks or a mid-rise scissor. Both get the wheels off the ground, but both put structure near where you need to work. Rolling jacks on a four-post are genuinely fine for axle jobs once you learn where to place them, and they add a lot of versatility if you also want to store a vehicle overhead. A mid-rise scissor gives excellent wheel access at a lower price and in a lower building, but you’ll be on a creeper or a stool the whole time. For the east-central Iowa hobbyist working on front-drive cars and the occasional half-ton, an asymmetric two-post in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range with adequate rise is the setup that makes the work pleasant. If that doesn’t fit the building, a four-post plus jacks is the compromise we recommend most often, and it’s the one people are happiest with long term.

Delivery, Offloading, and the Freight Trap

Lift freight is heavy and awkward and the trucking company’s job ends at the back of the trailer. Columns can run several hundred pounds each and a four-post crate is longer than most driveways are wide. Before you order, answer three questions: can a semi physically get to your building, is there a hard surface to set the crate on, and what equipment do you have to move it?

A tractor with forks, a skid steer, or a decent forklift solves this. A pair of buddies and a floor jack does not. Ask whether liftgate service is available and what it costs, and if you’re on a gravel lane or a tight cul-de-sac, tell the freight company in advance so they send an appropriate truck rather than a 53-foot trailer that can’t turn around. When we install, we handle the offload and staging as part of the job, which removes this whole category of problem. If you’re self-installing, plan the offload as its own event with its own equipment lined up. Also inspect the crate before you sign the delivery receipt. Note any damage on the bill of lading, photograph everything, and count the boxes against the packing list. Missing hardware kits are common and much easier to resolve when the paperwork shows the shortage on day one instead of three weeks later when you finally open everything up.

Install Day and the Steps DIYers Skip

Assembly instructions cover the obvious parts and gloss over the details that determine whether the equipment works right for fifteen years. The four we see done poorly most often: anchor bolt torque to spec with a calibrated wrench, shimming each column truly plumb in both planes, equalizing cable or chain tension, and adjusting the overhead cutoff bar or limit switch so it actually stops the carriage before a tall vehicle meets the ceiling.

Cable tension deserves special attention because it’s the one that fails quietly. Everything settles during the first couple dozen cycles, and if nobody comes back to re-equalize, one carriage starts running ahead of the other. We took a call from an owner-installer in another state whose brand-new setup wouldn’t lift level, and that was the whole story — never re-tensioned after break-in. Locks then engage unevenly and wear accelerates. Build the follow-up into your plan: cycle the equipment empty a dozen times, then loaded, then check tension and lock engagement at every position. Verify the hydraulic system is bled and the fluid level is right after the first full-rise cycles, because trapped air makes the lift feel spongy and uneven. Then commit to an annual inspection. ALI recommends yearly inspection by a qualified inspector, and it catches frayed cables, weeping cylinders, and worn lock dogs before they become an emergency call about a vehicle stuck in the air.

The One-Page Site Survey Checklist

Print this and walk your shop with a tape measure. Interior length, width, and clear ceiling height at the lowest point including door track and opener. Location and swing of every door. Slab thickness, PSI if known, joint locations, and whether there’s in-floor heat. Panel location, available breaker capacity, and distance to the intended power unit spot. Air compressor location if you have one. Overhead obstructions: heaters, lights, trusses, sprinkler lines. Access route for a semi and available offload equipment.

Then the vehicle side. Longest wheelbase, widest mirror-to-mirror width, heaviest gross weight, and lowest ground clearance among everything you’ll put on it. Add the vehicle you’ll probably own in five years. Write down the primary jobs — for a lot of the hobbyists we work with that’s brakes, tires, CV axles, exhaust, and oil changes — and pick the configuration that serves the top two, not the one that half-serves all five. Finally, decide who’s installing and when, and get concrete or electrical work scheduled ahead of the delivery date.
