Every spring we get calls from weekend mechanics along the Iowa-Missouri border who have found a used car lift on a marketplace listing three counties over and want to know whether it is worth the trailer trip. Usually the story is the same: a two-post unit sitting in a barn, seller says it works fine, no manual, no model tag they can find, and the price is about a third of new. Sometimes that is a genuinely good buy. Sometimes it is a pile of steel with a bent carriage and cables that should have been replaced a decade ago. We install and service equipment from every major brand out of Ames, so we have seen both outcomes, and there is a checklist that separates them.

Start With the Job, Not the Listing
The guy who prompted this article was doing an oil pan gasket on a small-block truck. That job is the whole reason he wanted to get off his back in the first place — you cannot drop a pan with any dignity on jack stands, and you sure cannot torque the new gasket to spec while lying on cold concrete in February. So before anybody looks at listings, we ask what work is actually planned. Oil pan gaskets, transmission drops, exhaust work, and suspension refreshes all want the vehicle up high with the wheels hanging free or at least the underside fully open. That pushes you toward a two-post, or a four-post with rolling jacks.
If the honest answer is “oil changes, brakes, and storing the convertible in winter,” a four-post drive-on changes the math completely. It parks two vehicles in one bay, needs no anchoring in most cases, and forgives a floor that is not perfectly flat. We had a hobbyist in a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls ask us exactly that question, and the four-post won because storage mattered more than wheels-free access. Define the job first. The listing you should be watching depends entirely on that answer, and half the used bargains people send us are simply the wrong style of equipment for the work they described in the same email.
Ceiling Height, Sidewalls, and the 12-Foot Trap
A 12-foot sidewall on a pole building sounds generous until you measure what a lift actually needs. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam typically wants 12 feet or more to the lowest obstruction, and that is before you account for the truss chord, a garage door track, or a light fixture hanging where the beam wants to go. Plenty of hobbyists buy a used overhead-style unit, get it home, and discover the crossbeam will not clear their door opener rail. That is a fixable problem — you relocate the opener — but it is much cheaper to know before the money changes hands.
Baseplate two-post designs solve most of the ceiling problem by routing the equalization cables and hydraulic line through the floor plate instead of overhead. You give up a clean drive-through path at the base, but you gain roughly a foot and a half of usable height. Four-post lifts have their own math: total rise plus vehicle height plus the runways plus whatever you want to stand under. We tell people to measure the lowest point in the bay, subtract the tallest vehicle they intend to raise, and see what is left. If it is under about 20 inches of working room, the car lift they are looking at is the wrong one for that building, no matter how good the price looks.
Concrete Is the Part Nobody Inspects
Steel gets all the attention and the slab gets none. Most two-post manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, and some heavier-capacity models want more. A lot of Iowa pole barn floors were poured four inches nominal, which in practice means three and a half in spots, with control joints and a saw cut exactly where you wanted to set an anchor. Anchors need distance from the edge of the slab and from any joint — usually several inches minimum — and setting one too close is how you end up with a column that walks under load.
We core-test slabs when there is any doubt, and when the floor comes back thin the fix is a cut-out and a new pad in each column footprint. That is not exotic work, but it is real money and real cure time, and it needs to be in your budget before you commit. The other thing we look for is slope. Shop floors are often pitched toward a drain, and a two-post can tolerate a little of that with shimming, but a pitch of more than about a quarter inch per foot makes for an ugly install. A four-post is more forgiving because the runways can be leveled independently. Check the floor with a level and a tape before you buy any lift, used or new.
Inspecting a Used Car Lift: What We Look At First
When someone sends us photos of a used find, we look at the same short list every time. First, the nameplate — brand, model, capacity, serial number. If it is gone, parts sourcing becomes guesswork and that alone knocks a chunk off what the unit is worth. Second, the equalization cables: we want to see no broken strands, no kinks, no rust bloom at the sheave, and adjustment threads that are not bottomed out. Third, the cylinders and every hose fitting, looking for the weepy film that says a seal is on borrowed time. We took an urgent call from an owner in Florida with a vehicle stuck in the air on a black four-post because the cylinder let go — no brand, no model, no manual. That is the scenario you avoid by inspecting first.
Fourth, the safety locks. Raise it, lower it onto the locks, listen for a crisp engagement at every position on both columns. A lock that will not catch is a hard stop for us. Fifth, the arms and carriages for bent or reworked steel, cracked welds, and gouged slide blocks. Sixth, the power unit — motor noise, reservoir fluid condition, and whether it holds pressure overnight. If four of those six come back clean and the other two are wear items like cables or seals, a used unit is often a good deal. If the frame is compromised or the locks are unreliable, walk away regardless of price.
Adding Up the Real Cost of Used
Used pricing is deceptive because the sticker is never the total. Figure disassembly and loading at the seller’s place, a trailer big enough for 15-foot columns, fuel both ways, and a couple of helpers. Then add the parts the inspection turned up. A full cable set is a common one. Seal kits for both cylinders, replacement hoses, a fresh set of anchors — anchors are not reusable, and we see people try — and quite often a power unit rebuild or replacement. Add the install itself, which for us means anchoring, shimming to plumb, bleeding, cycling the locks, and a documented load test.
When we total that up honestly for a customer, a used two-post in decent shape lands somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 to 75 percent of a new entry-level unit’s installed cost. Sometimes it comes out higher than new. The used route makes clear sense when you find a name-brand unit with paperwork, from a shop that maintained it, at a price that leaves room for cables and seals. It makes much less sense when the discount is only a few hundred dollars off new and you inherit an unknown history. New equipment brings a warranty, current-standard safety hardware, an actual manual, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in ten years. That last item matters more than most buyers expect.
Certification, Labels, and Why They Matter at Home
Commercial shops care about third-party certification because insurers and inspectors ask. Homeowners often assume it is irrelevant to them, and we understand why, but the labels do real work in a garage too. A certified unit has been tested to a recognized standard for structural capacity, lock function, and stability, and it arrives with the placards that tell you the rated capacity, the correct lifting points, and the sequence for lowering onto locks. That last one is what keeps a weekend job from becoming an emergency call.
On used equipment, the labels are usually sun-faded or scraped off. Replacement decal kits are available for most major brands and they are cheap, so we order them as part of a refurb. We also want the operating manual, because the arm-swing limits and pad configurations differ between models more than people think, and using the wrong pad height on a unibody car is a genuine hazard. If you are buying a car lift for a home shop where your kid might be handing you wrenches, treat the documentation as part of the purchase, not an afterthought. Here is what we hand people who are shopping near the state line. One: write down the three jobs you actually want to do, and pick the style that fits them. Two: measure the lowest obstruction in the bay and the tallest vehicle. Three: verify slab thickness, strength, and distance to joints before you fall in love with a listing. Four: on anything used, confirm brand, model, and capacity from the nameplate. Five: inspect cables, cylinders, locks, arms, and power unit, and price out whatever is worn. Six: add transport, parts, anchors, and professional install to the asking price and compare that number — not the asking price — to a new unit installed.
Seven: buy from a brand with a parts pipeline you can still reach in a decade. If you work through those seven steps and the used deal still looks good, go get it, and call us for the install and the wear parts.
