A shop owner in Sioux City called us last spring with a car lift already sitting on a pallet in his bay and an electrician telling him the panel would not support it. He runs annual state inspections plus general repair, and he had bought a three-phase power unit for a building with single-phase service. That is a fixable problem, but it is an expensive one to fix after the freight truck leaves. We install lifts across northwest Iowa, and electrical mismatch is the single most common reason a scheduled install turns into a two-trip job. This article lays two configurations side by side — single-phase 208-230V and three-phase 208-230V — so you can decide before you order rather than after.

Configuration A: Single-Phase 208-230V

Most independent shops in Sioux City are on single-phase service, and most light and medium-duty two-post lifts ship with a single-phase power unit as the default. A typical 10,000 to 12,000 pound two-post — a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL10 class machine — uses a 2 to 3 horsepower motor drawing roughly 20 to 24 amps at 208-230V under load. That wants a dedicated 30-amp, two-pole breaker on 10-gauge copper, with a disconnect within sight of the equipment. Do not share the circuit with the compressor. We have chased “the lift is slow” complaints that turned out to be voltage sag because a 5 HP compressor kicked on mid-cycle.

The advantages of single-phase are simple: it works with the service you already have, the power unit is the cheapest and most widely stocked version, and any competent electrician can run it in an afternoon. The trade-offs are motor life and speed. Single-phase motors draw a much higher inrush current at start, run hotter, and on a bay doing twenty-plus inspection cycles a day you will feel it — slower rise time and more heat in the reservoir. For a shop running a couple of full-cycle raises per hour, none of that matters. For a dedicated inspection lane hammering the same machine all day, it matters some. We install far more single-phase units than three-phase, and the honest reason is that the majority of buildings we work in simply do not have three-phase available at the panel.

Configuration B: Three-Phase 208-230V

If your building already has three-phase — common in older commercial blocks near the stockyards district and in newer light-industrial parks — the three-phase power unit is the better machine. Same 2 to 3 HP rating, but current per leg drops to roughly 9 to 12 amps, which means a 20-amp three-pole breaker on 12-gauge conductors instead of a 30-amp two-pole on 10-gauge. Starting torque is smoother, there is no start capacitor to fail, and the motor runs cooler and typically lasts longer under heavy duty cycles. Rotary and Challenger both offer three-phase variants across their commercial two-post and four-post lines.

The catch is availability and lead time. Three-phase power units are often built to order rather than pulled from a shelf, so you may wait an extra week or two. And if you do not already have three-phase service, bringing it in from the utility is not a small project — in Sioux City we have seen quotes for a new transformer and service upgrade land in the range of a used pickup, sometimes more, depending on distance to the pole and whether the utility has capacity on that leg. A rotary phase converter or VFD is an option and we have installed them, but the motor has to be rated for it and some manufacturers will not warrant a unit fed by a converter. Ask before you assume. If you are already upgrading service for a tire changer, alignment rack, and paint booth, adding the lift circuit to that project is cheap. If the lift is the only three-phase load, it is rarely worth it.

Side-by-Side: What Actually Decides It

Put the two configurations on one line. Single-phase: 30-amp two-pole breaker, 10-gauge wire, off-the-shelf power unit, faster to get, higher inrush, hotter motor, slightly slower rise. Three-phase: 20-amp three-pole breaker, 12-gauge wire, longer lead time, smoother start, cooler motor, longer expected service life. Both raise the same vehicle to the same height with the same lock system. The hydraulics and structure are identical; only the motor and contactor differ.

So the decision is almost never about the equipment. It is about your panel. Walk out to the service entrance, open the cover, and count. Three hot legs and a neutral means you likely have three-phase available. Two hots and a neutral means single-phase, and the conversation ends there unless you want to fund a utility upgrade. Then count spare breaker spaces and check the panel’s total capacity against what you already run. A 200-amp single-phase panel with a compressor, tire machine, welder, lighting, and HVAC on it may not have 30 amps of headroom, and that is a separate conversation with an electrician about load calculation or a subpanel. We ask every buyer for a photo of the panel label and the open panel before we quote an install, because that one photo prevents the second trip. Voltage Tap, the Detail Everyone Misses

Here is the failure we see more than any other on new installs, and it costs a motor. Many power units ship with a dual-voltage motor that can run 208-230V, and the motor has a tap or jumper set inside the junction box that must match your actual measured voltage. If the factory shipped it configured for 230 and your building measures 205 under load, the motor runs low-voltage, draws excess current, and cooks the windings over a few months. The reverse — a 208 tap on a 240-volt supply — pushes the motor hard and trips the overload.

Measure the actual voltage at the disconnect with everything else in the shop running. Do not trust the number on the utility bill or the nameplate assumption. Then open the motor junction box, confirm the lead configuration against the wiring diagram on the inside of the cover, and set it to match. This takes five minutes and requires nothing but a meter and a screwdriver. A general repair shop we work with in the Sioux City area lost a power unit in under a year because nobody checked, and the manufacturer declined the claim — improper installation, and they were right. When our crew commissions a machine, the measured voltage and the tap setting go on the paperwork. Ask whoever installs yours to do the same, and keep that sheet with the manual. It is the difference between a covered warranty claim and a new pump on your dime.

Overhead Wiring, Disconnects, and Iowa Inspection Bays

The electrical work does not stop at the power unit. On a clear-floor two-post, the overhead beam carries a limit switch and often the lock release wiring, and that harness has to be routed so it does not chafe on the beam edge or get pinched when a tall van clips the crossbar. We run it in flex conduit with strain relief at both ends. On an overhead-style lift in a bay with a low ceiling — and plenty of older Sioux City buildings run 11 to 12 feet — a floorplate model moves that routing to the ground, which means a raceway or a saw-cut channel in the slab so the crossover lines and wiring are not a trip hazard in an inspection lane where techs walk the same path fifty times a day.

Code requires a disconnecting means within sight of the motor, and inspectors in this part of the state do look for it. A lockable disconnect at the column is also a real safety feature: when a tech is under a vehicle at full height, that switch off and locked out means nobody bumps the up button. For shops running annual state inspections, we also recommend a separate switched circuit for bay lighting under the vehicle, because trouble lights on extension cords across an inspection lane are how people get hurt. None of this is expensive if it is planned with the install. Retrofitting a raceway into a finished slab after the machine is anchored is another story, which is why we push the electrical conversation to the front of every project instead of the end.

Getting the Order Right the First Time

When you place an order with us, six pieces of information determine whether your install is one trip or two. Service type — single-phase or three-phase. Measured voltage at the panel under load. Available breaker spaces and panel capacity. Slab thickness and concrete strength. Clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, including door tracks and unit heaters. And the heaviest vehicle you actually intend to raise, which for an inspection shop that occasionally sees a dually or a shuttle van is often heavier than the owner first says.

We would rather spend twenty minutes on the phone than send a crew to Sioux City and find out the panel is full.
