His techs had a wheel bearing pulled apart, the hub was off, and nobody wanted to touch the descent control. That call is the reason we start every conversation about a car lift with safety instead of specs. The good news that day was that the mechanical locks were engaged, so the vehicle was not going anywhere. The better news was that the unit was still inside its warranty window and the manufacturer covered the cylinder. Getting to that outcome, though, took documentation the shop nearly did not have.

The Locks Are the Safety System, Not the Hydraulics

The single most important thing a technician needs to understand is that hydraulic pressure raises the vehicle and mechanical locks hold it. On a properly functioning two-post or four-post unit, once the carriage or runway settles onto a lock dog, the hydraulic system is doing nothing structural. That is exactly why the central Iowa fleet shop with the leaking cylinder was not in immediate danger. The car was resting on steel, not on fluid.

We tell every crew we train to raise the vehicle to working height, then lower it deliberately onto the locks and listen for engagement on both sides. You should hear the dogs seat. If one side clicks and the other does not, stop and find out why before anyone crawls underneath. Broken lock springs, bent release cables, and gummed-up latch pivots are all common on equipment that has never been serviced, and they all defeat the one system standing between a technician and a falling vehicle. The Daily and Monthly Checks That Actually Matter

ANSI/ALI standards call for a documented daily visual inspection and an annual inspection by a qualified inspector. In practice, most fleet shops we work with in central Iowa run a short pre-use checklist and a longer monthly one. Daily: walk the unit, look for fluid on the floor or running down a column, check that arm restraint pins engage and hold, confirm the lock release handles return to rest, and eyeball cables for fraying, kinks, or slack that has changed since yesterday.

Monthly adds the items that catch problems before they become failures. Check hydraulic fluid level with the carriages fully down. Inspect equalizer cables for tension and even carriage height — if one side is riding a half inch high, the cables have stretched and need adjustment. Grease the column slide blocks and the arm pivots. Torque-check the anchor bolts, since concrete relaxes and anchors back off over time. Look at the overhead microswitch or shutoff bar and make sure it still trips. Wipe the cylinder rods clean so you can actually see a new leak when it starts. Wheel Bearing Service: Where Technique Meets Safety

Wheel bearing and hub work is one of the more demanding jobs to do on a raised vehicle, and it exposes weak equipment fast. The wheel comes off, the caliper and rotor come off, and then the tech is hammering, pressing, or torquing a hub nut to 200-plus foot-pounds. That is a lot of input into a vehicle balanced on four contact points.

On a two-post, get the vehicle centered so the load is balanced front to rear, and make sure all four arm restraints are locked before the first wrench turns. Never let a tech use the vehicle body as leverage against the direction of the arms. On a four-post with rolling jacks, verify the jack is seated on a manufacturer-approved lift point and that the jack’s own locks or blocks are set. Loose adapters and stacked wood blocks are how vehicles slide. We have been called out to fleet shops where a pickup shifted during a bearing press because the tech used a screw-jack extension on the wrong pad. If the job needs a press, an impact gun, and a slide hammer, it needs a car lift that is properly maintained, properly anchored, and properly loaded. Nothing about that is optional on municipal or emergency-service vehicles where a squad or a plow truck goes back into public service the same day. When in doubt, drop it onto the locks, set jack stands as a secondary, and go slower.

What a Lift Warranty Actually Covers

Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and by component, and the biggest source of frustration we see is people assuming one blanket period covers everything. Typical commercial coverage from the brands we sell runs five years on the structure, two years on the hydraulic and mechanical components, and one to two years on electrical items like the power unit motor, contactor, and limit switches. Some manufacturers separate the cylinder from the rest of the hydraulic group. Home and light-duty equipment usually carries shorter terms across the board.

What is generally not covered: normal wear items, seals damaged by contaminated fluid, damage from improper anchoring, damage from exceeding rated capacity, corrosion from outdoor or wash-bay exposure, and anything traced to a self-performed installation that did not follow the manual. That last one bites people regularly. We fielded a call from an owner in another state whose unit did not level after he installed it himself, and the manufacturer declined the claim because the anchors and cable routing were out of spec. A car lift installed by a certified installer with a documented commissioning check is a fundamentally different warranty position than one bolted down over a weekend. Freight damage is its own category and usually has to be reported within days of delivery, which is why we photograph every crate before it comes off the truck. Read your specific terms and file them where the shop foreman can find them, not in a drawer at city hall.

The Claim Workflow, Step by Step

When something fails inside the coverage window, the process moves fast if you have your paperwork and slowly if you do not. Step one: stop using the equipment and tag it out. Step two: photograph the serial plate. The model and serial number drive everything, and we cannot open a claim without them. Step three: photograph the failure itself — the weeping rod, the frayed cable, the cracked weld — from a few angles with good light.

Step four: pull your purchase documentation and your inspection records. Step five: call us. We contact the manufacturer’s warranty desk on your behalf, submit the photos and serials, and get a determination. If it is approved, the replacement part ships and we schedule the repair. If it is denied, we tell you why and quote the repair out of pocket rather than leaving you guessing. If a vehicle is up and the unit will not lower, do not start opening valves and do not let anyone work underneath. Clear the bay. Confirm which mechanical locks are engaged and on which side. If the carriages are on locks, the vehicle is stable and you have time to think, which is exactly the position you want to be in.

From there the sequence depends on the failure. A leaking cylinder that still holds partial pressure can often be lowered in controlled stages while a tech monitors both sides for even descent. A blown hose or a dead power unit may require cribbing the vehicle, supporting the carriages, and lowering manually per the manufacturer’s emergency procedure.
