A crew chief for a dirt-track team out in east-central Iowa called us in February with a problem we hear every winter: he had four cars, one shop, and a season starting in April. He wanted a scissor lift for automotive service work that could go up fast for a between-heats suspension change, then get out of the way so he could roll a trailer through. He also wanted to know whether buying used was smart or whether he’d be buying somebody else’s leaking cylinder. That conversation turned into a decision tree we now walk almost every caller through, and it’s the same one we’re laying out here — budget first, then configuration, then new-versus-used, then install reality.

Start With Budget, Because It Eliminates Half the Catalog

The first branch of the tree is the one nobody likes: what are you actually willing to spend, installed? We ask that up front because it collapses the options fast. A low-rise or mid-rise pad-style unit lands in the entry tier. A full-rise drive-on model with an integrated rolling jack sits two tiers up, and a flush-mounted recessed installation adds concrete cutting, a pit, and a licensed electrician on top of the equipment cost. We had a caller from Orlando once who wanted a scissors unit under three grand and was otherwise open to a low-ceiling two-post. That’s a perfectly rational place to start — but it narrows you to the mid-rise category, and you need to know that going in rather than after four weeks of shopping.

Here’s the part that saves people money: a scissor lift for automotive service is often more expensive than a two-post of comparable capacity, and for a lot of general repair work it does less. We tell people that plainly. If you have the ceiling height and the bay width for a two-post, and you need full wheel access for brakes and suspension, the two-post usually wins on both cost and versatility. The scissor earns its keep when ceiling height is limited, when you need the floor clear between jobs, or when the drive-on convenience genuinely changes your throughput. Budget alone doesn’t decide it — but it tells you which branch you’re on.

Configuration: Mid-Rise, Full-Rise, or Drive-On Storage

Once budget is set, configuration is the next fork. A mid-rise pad lift raises the car roughly waist-high on frame contact points. It’s excellent for wheel and brake work, quick-service tire jobs, and detailing. It is not a lift you stand under comfortably, and it doesn’t store a second vehicle. A full-rise scissor takes you to standing height with the same clear-floor advantage, and that’s where most serious home and small-shop buyers end up. Then there’s the drive-on runway style, which behaves more like a four-post and is the one to look at if seasonal storage is on the list.

Our racing customer needed both jobs from one machine, and that’s where the tree gets honest. Storage means the car sits loaded on the lift for months, which means you want mechanical locks engaging every couple of inches through the travel, not hydraulic hold alone. Every good unit we sell has that ladder of locks — it clicks as it climbs and you park it wherever the height suits the car underneath. Service work means you want the lift low-profile enough to slide under a lowered chassis. Those two demands pull in opposite directions, and sometimes the right answer is a four-post for storage plus a low-rise scissor for service. Your Slab and Your Ceiling Decide More Than Your Wallet

Before anyone signs anything, we want two numbers: slab thickness and PSI, and clear ceiling height under any obstruction. A 30×40 pole building with a twelve-foot sidewall — the exact spec a customer described to us a few years back when he was planning a shop for passenger-car maintenance and one-car-over-one storage — is generally workable. But twelve feet of sidewall doesn’t mean twelve feet of clear height if there’s a truss, a garage door track, or a light fixture in the way. Measure to the lowest thing over the lift footprint, not the peak.

Concrete matters even more for a scissor lift for automotive use than people expect. Yes, the load spreads over a larger footprint than a two-post’s two baseplates, but the anchoring still needs sound, thick, cured slab. Four inches at 3,000 PSI minimum is the general rule for surface-mount units; heavier capacities want more. If your slab is unknown, we core-test or we recommend cutting and pouring a proper pad. We’ve walked into Iowa garages where the concrete looked fine and turned out to be two and a half inches over gravel. That’s not a lift problem, that’s a foundation problem, and it’s cheaper to find out in week one than after the anchors pull. Power is the third number — most units run single-phase 208-230V, and you want a dedicated circuit run by an electrician, not an extension cord to the dryer outlet.

New Equipment: What You’re Actually Paying For

Buying new gets you three things: a warranty, current parts availability, and a machine nobody has abused. That third one is worth more than buyers expect. Hydraulic scissor mechanisms live and die by cylinder seals, pivot pins, and the condition of the lock ladder. A new unit gives you a known baseline on all three, and it gives us a serial number that ties directly to a parts diagram we can pull five years from now.

Parts pipeline is the quiet argument for new. We stock and source for every major brand, and the difference between a lift whose manufacturer still supports it and one that’s orphaned is the difference between a two-day repair and a two-month fabrication project. When we spec a new scissor lift for automotive service, we’re also spec’ing the next decade of cylinders, power units, hoses, and lock components. That matters especially on scissor designs, because unlike a two-post where a lot of hardware is semi-universal, scissor geometry is model-specific. The cylinder that fits one manufacturer’s mid-rise will not fit another’s. Warranty coverage on a new install typically runs multi-year on structure and shorter on hydraulics and electrical, and because we do the installation ourselves, there’s no finger-pointing between the seller and the installer when something needs attention. One phone number, one team, one truck. If you’re weighing that against a bargain from a marketplace listing, factor it in honestly.

Used Equipment: When It’s Smart and When It’s a Trap

We sell used equipment, we install used equipment other people bought, and we’ve told plenty of callers to walk away from a used deal. Here’s the framework. Used is smart when you can inspect it in person, when the brand is still supported, when you can see it cycle under load, and when the price leaves room in your budget for a full seal kit and a new power unit if needed. Used is a trap when it’s an orphaned import brand, when it’s been disassembled before you see it, or when the seller can’t tell you the model number.

Specific things we check: cylinder rods for pitting and weeping at the gland, the lock ladder and pawls for wear or cracked welds, pivot pins for elongation, hose condition and routing, and the deck or pads for bent or repaired structure. We photograph everything before a used unit leaves a site — that’s standard practice on our end. A leaking cylinder is not automatically a dealbreaker; we rebuild those regularly, including on two-post units from budget brands, and a reseal is a fraction of a new machine. Cracked structure or a bent scissor arm is a dealbreaker, full stop, because that’s geometry you cannot straighten and trust. Our rule of thumb: budget the purchase price plus 25-35% for reconditioning on any used unit older than ten years, and if that combined number approaches new, buy new. Seasonal Storage Loads and the Long-Term Hold

Storage is a different duty cycle than service, and it’s worth thinking through separately. A car that sits on a lift from October to April is a static load on the locks, not the hydraulics — assuming you lower onto the locks properly every single time, which is the one habit that matters most. Hydraulic systems bleed down slowly. That’s normal. Mechanical locks don’t. If your plan is a race car up top and a daily driver underneath all winter, you want the lift resting on steel, and you want to verify lock engagement on both sides before you walk away.

The other storage consideration is height selection. Our east-central Iowa crew chief wanted to know if he was stuck with all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down, and he wasn’t. Good units click into locks roughly every two to two and a half inches through the travel range, so you set the height that clears the vehicle underneath and no higher. Less travel means less wear and easier access to what’s up top. Also plan for cold: hydraulic fluid thickens in an unheated Iowa shop, lift speed drops in January, and that’s not a failure, it’s viscosity. Use the fluid the manufacturer specifies rather than whatever’s on the shelf, and consider a lighter-weight oil if the building never gets above forty degrees. Check anchor torque and lock function once a season, and get an annual inspection on anything holding weight over your head.

Working the Decision Tree With Us

Here’s how the whole thing runs end to end. You call, we ask for bay dimensions, ceiling clearance to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and age, available power, heaviest vehicle, and whether storage is part of the plan. Sometimes it isn’t — plenty of times we’ve steered someone toward a two-post because the scissor was costing more and delivering less for their work.
