A scissor lift for automotive work is not the first thing most people picture in an RV and trailer service shop, but that is exactly where we installed one last spring for a family-run outfit up in the Iowa Great Lakes region. They do suspension and shock replacement on travel trailers, toy haulers, small motorhomes, and a steady stream of half-ton and three-quarter-ton tow vehicles that come in behind them. Their bays were long, their ceilings were tall, and their floor was already crowded with jack stands and a rolling parts cart. Why an RV and Trailer Shop Went Scissor Instead of Two-Post
The shop foreman called us in February wanting a two-post. That is what everyone calls about. But when we walked the building, the problem was obvious: the front third of every bay had overhead radiant tube heat and the rear had a mezzanine for parts storage. A two-post needs unobstructed height above the columns plus room for the overhead beam, and the ceiling penetrations were not going to move. Their trailer work also meant a lot of long, low frames rolling in and out, and columns in the way of a 24-foot bumper-pull tongue is a daily annoyance nobody warns you about.
A full-rise scissor changes the geometry entirely. Nothing stands up out of the floor when it is down, so a trailer can be pushed straight through the bay without a spotter. When we priced it out, the honest answer we give most callers applies here too: a scissor is often more money than a comparable two-post for the same capacity, and if you have the ceiling and the floor space, the two-post usually wins on value. This shop was the exception. The obstruction map made the choice for them, and a year later they still say it was right.
Suspension and Shock Replacement on a Scissor Deck
Suspension and shock replacement is where this crew earns its money, and it is also the use case that made us pick a specific configuration rather than the cheapest thing on the pallet. On a plain drive-on scissor, the runways sit under the tires, which is fine for oil service and brake inspection but useless when you need the wheels hanging free. They needed wheels-free capability, so we specified a model with rolling bridge jacks that ride on the runway rails and lift by the frame or axle while the vehicle stays on the deck.
In practice that has worked out well for the tow vehicles. Leaf spring shackles, shock mounts, and track bars on a three-quarter-ton pickup are all comfortable at chest height with the wheels drooping. Trailer axles are a slightly different story: on tandem-axle trailers the crew often lifts one axle at a time with the bridge jack and leaves the other loaded, which the lift handles fine but requires them to think about load distribution instead of just running it up. That was the biggest learning curve of the first month. We spent an afternoon on site going through where the load can and cannot sit, and after that they stopped second-guessing it.
ALI Gold Certification and Why We Insisted On It
We push ALI Gold certification hard, and this install is a good example of why. ALIs certification program means an independent lab has tested and validated the model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for load capacity, structural integrity, and safety systems, and the certification is renewed rather than granted once and forgotten. When you buy a scissor lift for automotive service that carries the Gold label, you are buying a design that somebody outside the factory actually loaded to failure and documented.
The practical reason mattered more to this shop than the philosophical one. Their insurance carrier asked for equipment documentation during a walkthrough in the fall, and having a certified model with the ALI plate on the frame and current inspection paperwork in the binder ended that conversation in about four minutes. Iowa does not mandate lift certification for private shops, but carriers and, increasingly, fleet customers do ask. The other thing worth saying plainly: certification covers the lift as manufactured, not the lift as installed on a bad slab. A Gold label does not save you from four inches of cracked concrete. That is why we core-test before we anchor anything.
The Install: Slab, Anchors, and Power
Install day was a two-person, one-day job, which is typical for a surface-mount unit but only because we did the prep work first. Their slab tested at just over five inches with good aggregate, well above the four-inch minimum most manufacturers publish, so anchoring was straightforward. We drilled, set wedge anchors to spec, torqued them, and shimmed the runways level across both the length and the diagonal. Level matters more on a scissor than people expect because the platform geometry amplifies any twist you leave in the base frame.
Power was the other item. The unit runs on 220V single-phase, and the shop had a spare circuit in the panel from an old welder, so their electrician pulled a dedicated run to the power unit location instead of us fishing for an extension. We routed the hydraulic line and the air line for the lock release in the same shallow surface channel and covered it with a steel plate, because a surface-mount scissor in a trailer bay is going to have hand trucks and floor jacks rolling over that line for the next fifteen years. Small detail, but the shops that skip it call us about a crushed hose within two seasons.
Adjustable Lock Positions and Everyday Working Height
One question we field constantly is whether a scissor lift for automotive use is an all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down proposition. It is not. On the models we sell, mechanical locks engage every couple of inches through the travel, so a tech can set the deck wherever their back is happiest and hear it click in. That sounds minor until you watch somebody do shock work all day at the wrong height.
The RV shop uses maybe four working heights regularly. Low deck for loading and unloading and for checking trailer brake wiring. Knee height for wheel and hub work. Chest height for suspension and shock replacement, which is the bulk of their day. Full rise for anything requiring them to stand under it, like fuel tank straps or driveline inspection on a tow vehicle. The foreman told us in month three that the adjustable locks were the feature he did not know he cared about, and he is not the first person to say that to us. The lock release is air-actuated on this model, which means the shop air has to be up before the lift comes down. Everybody figures that out once and never again.
First Service Call and the Twelve-Month Inspection
The first real service call came in month seven, and it was not a failure. The lift was drifting down about a quarter inch over a couple of hours when loaded, which is enough to make an owner nervous. We came up and found what we usually find: a slightly weeping fitting at the cylinder base, not the seal package. Snugged and replaced the fitting, topped off the reservoir with the correct AW-32 hydraulic oil, cycled it twenty times to purge air, and it held dead flat afterward.
Some drift on a scissor is not automatically a fault. The mechanical locks are the safety system; hydraulics hold position, and locks hold weight. If it is drifting more than an inch or so, or if you can see fluid on the floor, call somebody. At the twelve-month mark we did the full annual inspection: anchor torque check, lock engagement on every step, hose and fitting inspection, cylinder rod condition, structural welds, decals and load rating legibility, and a loaded function test. Anchors had held torque. One lift arm pivot pin needed grease. That was the entire year one report. For a shop that runs the lift ten to fifteen cycles a day, that is exactly what we want to see, and it is a fair benchmark for anybody budgeting maintenance.
What We Would Tell the Next RV Shop
If you are running an RV and trailer operation anywhere from the Great Lakes region down through central Iowa, the honest starting point is a bay survey, not a catalog page. Measure your ceiling at the lowest obstruction, not at the peak. Measure your bay width at the narrowest point, including where the air reel hangs. Know your slab thickness or let us core it. Know your heaviest realistic vehicle, and add margin, because the one-ton dually with a full fuel tank and a toolbox is heavier than the sticker suggests. A scissor lift for automotive work solves an obstruction problem elegantly, but if you have clear ceiling and open floor, we will tell you a two-post is the better buy and we will not be offended when you take that advice.
What tipped this shop was the combination of overhead heat, a mezzanine, and long trailers needing a clear drive-through path.
