A crew chief for a small circle-track team out of Waukee called us in the middle of a rebuild week with a very specific question: he was pulling CV axles and half-shafts out of a support truck and two street cars every month, working off jackstands on a cold concrete floor, and he wanted to know which car lift he could buy now, use hard for four seasons, and sell without eating a loss. That is a smarter question than most people ask. Equipment that fits the work and holds its value is a different purchase than the cheapest thing that goes up and down. So we built him a decision tree, budget first, and then talked resale. Here’s the whole conversation.

Step One: Define the Work, Not the Wish List
Every decision tree starts with an honest description of the job. For the Waukee crew, roughly seventy percent of shop hours were suspension and driveline: CV axles, half-shafts, hub bearings, control arms, and the occasional transmission drop. That work wants wheels-free access and open space under the rockers. It does not want runways in the way. If the same team had told us they mostly did storage, oil changes, and brake bleeds, we’d have gone a completely different direction.
So write down your top five jobs by hours, not by excitement. Half-shaft replacement, alignment, exhaust work, tire mounting, engine pulls, and long-term storage each push the answer somewhere different. Then note your heaviest vehicle and your longest vehicle separately, because those are rarely the same one. A team hauler at 8,000 pounds and a long-bed pickup at 21 feet set two different constraints. Finally, be honest about frequency. A job you do twice a year does not justify the configuration; that’s what a floor jack and patience are for. The Waukee team’s list made the choice mostly for them: a two-post with a clear floor was going to serve driveline work far better than anything they could drive onto, and the money saved on runway length went into a taller column set so a raised car cleared the crew chief’s head with room to spare.
Step Two: Set a Real Budget — Equipment Plus Installation
The number people quote each other at the track is the equipment price. The number that actually leaves your bank account includes freight, installation, concrete work if the slab needs it, electrical, and any accessories. In our experience installation and utilities routinely add twenty to forty percent on top of a surface-mounted machine, and considerably more if the floor has to be cut and re-poured. Budget for the whole project or you’ll end up cutting the accessories that make the equipment useful.
Broadly, entry-level home-grade two-post equipment sits in the low four figures, mid-tier commercial two-post runs a few thousand more, and premium commercial with clearfloor design and a name-brand warranty is a meaningful step above that. Four-post storage equipment starts lower than people expect and climbs fast once you add rolling jacks and a caster kit. Where we push back on tight budgets is safety-relevant components: locks, cables, cylinders, and anchors. Saving a few hundred dollars there is not a saving. We also tell customers to ask about financing rather than downgrading the machine — programs with no-interest terms come around regularly and it’s usually smarter to buy the right car lift on payments than the wrong one in cash. Step Three: Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mid-Rise Scissor
Here’s the branch most people care about. Two-post, wheels-free, is the answer for suspension and driveline work — CV axles, half-shafts, hubs, brakes, and anything where the wheels need to hang. Within two-post you choose asymmetric arms if you mostly do cars and want door clearance, symmetric if you do trucks and vans, and clearfloor overhead versus baseplate depending on ceiling height. Ten-foot ceilings usually mean baseplate; twelve feet and up opens the door to a clearfloor overhead design that leaves nothing to trip over.
Four-post is the right call for storage, alignment, and anyone who wants to drive on and be working in ninety seconds. Add rolling jacks and it does wheels-free work too, though never quite as pleasantly as a two-post. Mid-rise scissor is the compromise pick for low ceilings, tight footprints, and shops that need the floor clear when the equipment isn’t in use — great for brakes and wheels, limited for anything requiring under-car standing room. For the Waukee team, the tree ended at a symmetric two-post, baseplate style because the building had a twelve-foot wall but a truss that dropped lower than advertised. Step Four: Capacity, Column Height, and the Specs That Bite Later
Capacity is where the leads we get tell the story. We’ve taken calls on a 7,000 lb four-post with a car stuck in the air and a leaking cylinder, a 14,000 lb drive-on in a large shop that outgrew its rolling jacks, and plenty of people who bought exactly enough capacity for the vehicle they owned at the time. Buy one tier above your heaviest routine vehicle. A 9,000 or 10,000 lb two-post handles nearly every passenger car and light truck with margin; a 12,000 lb machine covers three-quarter-tons and duallies. The cost difference between tiers is small compared to the cost of replacing the whole setup in three years.
Column height and rise are the specs people forget. Maximum rise determines whether a tall crew chief stands upright under a rocker panel or spends four seasons hunched. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction — truss, light, garage door track, opener rail — and subtract the vehicle’s roof height plus the rise. Then check the arm reach and the minimum pad height, because a lowered car with side skirts needs a low-profile pad and drop-in adapters. Also look at the power unit voltage against your panel, and at whether the model uses standard replaceable wear parts. That last item is quietly the biggest long-term cost driver: a car lift built on common cables, cylinders, and lock latches stays serviceable for decades, while an oddball import can become unrepairable the day the importer stops answering the phone.
Step Five: What Actually Holds Resale Value on a Car Lift
Now the crew chief’s real question. Used equipment sells constantly in Iowa — shops close, hobbyists move, teams change classes — and the pricing spread between two machines of the same age is enormous. Brand is the first factor. Rotary and Challenger commercial equipment holds value better than nearly anything else because buyers know parts are available and installers will touch it. On the home side, BendPak and Atlas both retain a solid share of purchase price. Unbranded imports, by contrast, often sell for scrap-plus-a-little, because the next buyer can’t source a cable or a lock latch.
Second factor: ALI certification and documentation. A machine with a gold ALI label, the original manual, the installation paperwork, and a stack of annual inspection reports sells faster and higher than an identical unit with no history. We’ve watched two similar four-posts sell weeks apart with a thirty percent gap driven almost entirely by paperwork. Third: condition of the wear items. Fresh cables, clean cylinders with no weeping seals, intact lock latches, and unbent arms signal a maintained machine. Fourth: completeness. Original arm pads, adapters, rolling jacks, and drip trays add real dollars; missing accessories subtract more than they cost new. Fifth, and this surprises people: how it comes out of the floor. A machine removed carefully with anchors cut flush and columns not gouged looks like a professional job. One that was pried loose looks like a risk.
Trade-In, Private Sale, or Keep It Forever
When the four seasons are up, the Waukee team will have three paths. Trade-in through a dealer or installer is the easiest — we take equipment in on new installations regularly, we handle removal, and the customer never lists anything or meets a stranger with a trailer. The trade number is lower than a strong private sale, and that discount is the price of convenience and of us assuming the risk on whatever we find when the covers come off. For a team mid-season with no time to spare, that’s usually the right trade.
Private sale gets the best number if you’re willing to do the work: good photos with the vehicle off, honest disclosure of hours and any repairs, the paperwork stack, and a clear statement about who does the removal. That last point kills more private deals than price. Removing a two-post is not a two-guys-and-a-Saturday job — the columns are heavy, the anchors fight you, and the hydraulic system needs to be drained properly. We’ll quote removal for either party, and we’d rather do it than get a call about a column that fell over in a driveway. The third path is simply keeping it. A well-maintained car lift from a supported brand runs thirty years on routine parts, and at that point the depreciation math stops mattering.
