Fluid on a cylinder rod, on the base of the column, or pooled on the floor doesn’t tell you much until you wipe it dry and watch where it reappears. JIC fittings back off slightly over years of vibration and thermal cycling, and a fitting that’s a quarter-turn loose will seep fluid that looks exactly like a cylinder leak from a few feet away. Hose ends crimped decades ago can also weep at the crimp itself, which is a hose replacement, not a cylinder problem.
We’ve seen technicians pull a cylinder apart, replace every seal, reinstall it, and still have a leak because the actual failure point was a fitting an inch above the cylinder port. Trace fluid to its literal highest point before assuming the component below it is the culprit. This step alone resolves a surprising share of the leak calls we get, and it costs nothing but a few minutes and a flashlight.
What Fluid Color and Texture Tell You
Fresh hydraulic fluid runs clear to light amber. If what’s leaking out is dark, gritty, or has visible metal flecks in it, that’s a sign of internal wear beyond just a seal — it usually means the bore itself has scored and is chewing up new seals as fast as you install them. Milky or cloudy fluid points to water contamination, which is common on lifts installed near bay doors or in shops that don’t control humidity well through Iowa winters.
Reading the fluid is a step a lot of DIY diagnoses skip, and it matters because it changes the fix. A clean seal failure with clear fluid usually means a straightforward reseal or cylinder swap solves it permanently. Not every leaking cylinder needs full replacement.
