Why Guessing Costs More Than Asking

The expensive version of this story always looks the same. A shop orders a "standard" equalizer cable set based on a photo from a search engine, waits four days, opens the box, and discovers the sheave ends are the wrong style and the length is off by fourteen inches. Now they’re eating freight both directions and the bay is still dead. We had a two-bay repair shop in central Iowa go through exactly that twice before they called us, and the parts they’d bought were for a lift built by a company that had been out of business for a decade.

Careful car lift parts identification up front is cheap. It costs a few photos and five minutes of measuring. The alternative is a bay generating zero revenue while boxes shuttle back and forth. What makes it tricky is that the lift market has consolidated and re-branded relentlessly — the same physical column has been sold under several private-label names, and two lifts that look identical from ten feet away can use completely different carriage assemblies. That’s why we don’t identify parts by appearance alone. We work from data plates, casting marks, and dimensions, in that order, and we only fall back on visual matching when nothing else survives.

The Serial Plate Is Still the Fastest Answer

Nine times out of ten, the whole puzzle is solved by a sticker or stamped plate you’ve walked past a thousand times. On two-post lifts it lives on the powerside column, usually between waist and shoulder height on the outer face, sometimes on the inside of the column near the carriage track. On four-post lifts, check the powerunit-side column and the underside of the crossbeam. Overhead-style lifts often carry a second plate on the top beam itself. Look for a model number, a serial number, a capacity rating, and a manufacture date — all four help.

Take the photo with the flash on and hold the camera square to the plate so the stamped digits aren’t washed out at an angle. If paint or grime has buried it, a rag with brake cleaner and a light pass with a wire brush usually brings the numbers back; on badly corroded plates, a pencil rubbing on paper works surprisingly well. Serial numbers matter as much as models because manufacturers change internals mid-run without changing the model name — a lift built in 2004 may use a different cylinder seal kit than the same model built in 2011. Car Lift Parts Identification When the Plate Is Gone

Plenty of lifts in Iowa shops have been repainted, sandblasted, or moved between three buildings, and the plate is simply gone. That’s not a dead end. We start with the powerunit: the motor tag, pump manufacturer, and reservoir shape narrow the field fast, and many powerunits carry their own part number cast or stamped into the housing. Next we look at the carriage and lock mechanism — the shape of the lock ladder, the tooth spacing, and whether the latch is single-point or dual-point are strong fingerprints.

After that we measure. Column height, base plate bolt pattern and hole spacing, overall width between columns, arm pin diameter, and sheave diameter all get recorded. For cables, we need overall length pin-to-pin, cable diameter, and the end fitting style on each end. For hydraulic cylinders, we need stroke, body diameter, rod diameter, port size and location, and the mount style top and bottom. Cables, Sheaves, and the Parts People Get Wrong Most

Equalizer cables are the number one misidentified item we see. Two lifts of the same capacity from the same brand can use different cable lengths depending on column height and overhead versus floorplate configuration, and the fittings vary between threaded studs, button ends, and swaged eyes. Measure the old cable if you still have it, including the threaded portion, and photograph both ends. If the cable already snapped, measure the routing path instead and tell us how many sheaves it passes over.

Sheaves and lock latches are the next tier of confusion. Sheave bore diameter, outer diameter, and groove width need to match, and a sheave that is close-but-not-right chews cable in a matter of months. Lock latch springs and pawls differ by generation even within one model line. Arm restraint gears, slider blocks, and arm pins are also commonly ordered wrong because they look generic in photos while actually being brand-specific. When someone sends us a request for a "normal" slider block, we always ask for a caliper measurement of thickness and width, plus the pin diameter it rides on. Two minutes with a tape measure prevents a week of downtime, and it’s the cheapest insurance in this whole process.

Hydraulics: Cylinders, Seals, and Powerunits

Hydraulic parts reward precision. For a cylinder, we want stroke length, rod diameter, barrel diameter, port thread size, and the exact mounting arrangement — clevis, trunnion, threaded, or flange. Photograph the cylinder installed before you pull it, because mount orientation matters and it’s easy to forget which way the port faced. If you’re chasing a slow leak, note whether fluid is coming from the rod seal, the port fitting, or the weld seam; a weeping weld means replacement, not a seal kit.

Powerunits bring their own identification questions: voltage and phase, horsepower, reservoir capacity, pump displacement, and whether the unit is a standard or a specialty configuration. We ask for a photo of the motor tag and the whole assembly from two angles. Seal kits are the trickiest category of all because the same cylinder body may have used two different seal profiles across its production life, which loops us right back to serial numbers. This is where good car lift parts identification pays off hardest — a seal kit is inexpensive, but a wrong seal kit means pulling the cylinder twice. When we’re unsure, we ask you to pull one old seal and photograph its cross-section against a ruler.

Brand Realities: Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas

We stock and service parts across every major line, and each brand has its own identification quirks. Rotary lifts generally have excellent documentation and clean model numbering, so once you find the plate, the parts breakdown falls into place quickly — and Rotary has been in enough Iowa shops long enough that we’ve seen most generations of their two-post and inground equipment firsthand. Challenger commercial lifts are similar, with parts diagrams that track well by model and serial range, which makes them straightforward on the commercial and heavy-duty side.

On the home-garage and light-duty end, BendPak and Atlas are the two lines we support most, and both have gone through enough revisions that the serial number does real work in narrowing the correct part. Older imported lifts sold under regional private labels are the hardest cases, because the badge on the column may have nothing to do with who actually built it. In those situations we identify by dimension and hardware pattern and then cross-reference to a functionally equivalent part we can actually supply. How to Send Us Everything We Need in One Message

Here’s the packet that gets you a same-day answer instead of a three-message back-and-forth. First, a photo of the serial or data plate, flash on, shot square. Second, a wide photo of the entire lift from far enough back to show both columns, the overhead or floorplate configuration, and the arm style. Third, a close photo of the broken or worn part from two angles, ideally with a tape measure in the frame. Fourth, your measurements — the ones listed above for whichever component you’re chasing.
