A good car lift safety checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop will ever buy, and after years of installing and servicing lifts out of Ames, Iowa, we can tell you exactly what a bad one looks like: a clipboard on a nail by the compressor with the last signature dated three summers ago. We get called into shops all over central Iowa — dealerships, independents, tire stores, farm shops, and home garages — and the pattern is consistent. Start With the Daily Walkaround: Ninety Seconds Per Bay
The daily portion is short on purpose. Before the first vehicle goes up, the tech should raise the lift empty to about chest height, listen, and look. Both sides should rise together on a two-post — visible drift between carriages means a cable is stretching or a slack-cable device is dragging. Set it down on the lowest locks and listen for the latches engaging. On a two-post you should hear crisp, near-simultaneous clicks. Mushy or single-side clicks mean the lock cable or spring needs attention now, not next month.
Then eyeball the physical stuff: arm restraints turning freely and locking, pads present and not crushed flat, no fluid on the floor under the power unit or at the cylinder base, no fresh oil streaks down a post. Check that the safety overhead shutoff bar swings and the emergency lowering setup is unobstructed. Look at the anchor bolts — rust weeping out from under a base plate is a tell that the bolt is working in the hole. Finally, glance at the area: no air hose, creeper, or drain pan under the vehicle path. Every one of those items is something we’ve found broken during a service call where the shop swore nothing had changed. A car lift safety checklist only works if it happens before the first RO of the day, not after somebody notices a noise.
Cables, Chains, and the Parts That Fail Quietly
Equalizer cables and lock cables are the number one thing we replace in Iowa shops, and they almost never fail loudly. On a two-post overhead, run a gloved hand along the accessible cable runs monthly and feel for broken strands — a single popped wire that snags a glove is the beginning of the end. Look at the sheaves at the top of each column for flat spots, wobble, or a groove worn into the side of the pulley. Cable that rides a worn sheave frays fast. On a four-post, check the four lifting cables at the pulley crossovers for the same fraying, plus even tension; if one corner sits low or the platform racks, you have a stretched cable, not a level-floor problem.
Chain-driven and screw-drive units have their own tells. Chain should be lubricated, not caked in black grease and grit, and it shouldn’t have a stiff link that clicks over the sprocket. Slack-cable safety devices need to move freely — we find them seized with old grease and dust more often than we find them broken. Anything you can’t inspect visually should be on a schedule. Our rule of thumb: cables get replaced on condition or on time, whichever comes first, and time is roughly the manufacturer’s interval, not “whenever it snaps.” Documenting cable condition on the same sheet as everything else is what turns a car lift safety checklist into a maintenance record you can actually use to budget.
The Monthly Car Lift Safety Checklist Items
Monthly is where fluids and fasteners live. Pull the power unit cap and check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered — checking it raised will have you overfilling and blowing seals. Look at the fluid itself: milky means water intrusion, dark and burnt means it’s been running hot or it’s old. Wipe the cylinder rod and watch for weeping past the packing after a full cycle. Grease the carriage slide blocks or rollers per the manual, and check that the columns aren’t scored where the carriage travels.
Then torque the anchors. This is the single most skipped item we see. Concrete anchors relax as the slab cures and as the lift cycles, and a torque wrench on each bolt takes five minutes. If a bolt spins without building torque, stop using that bay and call us — the fix might be an epoxy anchor or a concrete repair, and it is not a wait-and-see item. Also check the slab itself for cracking that radiates from a base plate, and confirm you still have the thickness and PSI the manufacturer requires. We’ve stood in more than one Iowa shop where a lift was bolted to four inches of unreinforced concrete poured over dirt in 1974. Monthly is also the right cadence to verify the ANSI/ALI safety labels and load capacity placards are still legible, because a faded capacity sticker is how a 9,000 lb lift ends up under a loaded dually. Annual Inspection: What a Certified Inspector Looks At
ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for a qualified annual inspection, and in practice that means someone who isn’t you looking at the lift with load testing and a documented report. An inspector will run the unit through full travel loaded and unloaded, verify every lock engages and holds, test the slack-cable and overload devices, measure cable and chain wear against spec, check column plumb, torque anchors, inspect welds at the base plates and arm pivots, and confirm the power unit relief valve isn’t cranked past rated pressure by a previous tech chasing a slow lift.
The report matters as much as the inspection. If OSHA or your insurance carrier ever asks, a signed annual record plus your daily sheets is the difference between a conversation and a problem. Lift Type Changes the Checklist
A single generic sheet doesn’t cover a shop with four different lift styles. Two-post asymmetric units need arm restraint and pad-height attention because the vehicle’s center of gravity is deliberately shifted; check that adapters are the right height stack and that nobody has left a stack of three screw pads on one arm. Four-post lifts need runway-level checks, ramp and stop condition, and slack-cable device function — plus jack tray rollers if you’re using a rolling bridge jack. Scissor and mid-rise lifts hide their linkage, so watch for pivot pin wear, uneven lifting, and hoses chafing inside the frame.
Inground lifts add corrosion and environment. Check the pit or cassette for standing water, verify the containment is intact, look for oil sheen that indicates a leaking cylinder or line, and confirm covers seat flush. Mobile column sets need battery condition, cable and connector integrity between columns, and synchronization verified before every heavy-duty lift. EVs deserve their own line items too — pinch-weld condition, battery-pack clearance, and the fact that a mid-size electric crossover can weigh as much as a three-quarter-ton pickup. Making the Checklist Stick With Your Crew
The best-maintained lifts we service belong to shops that made the checklist boring and unavoidable. Laminate one sheet per bay, hang it at eye level on the column itself rather than in an office binder, and put the lift model and serial number right at the top so a parts call takes thirty seconds instead of ten minutes of squinting at a faded data plate. Initials and date, every morning, and the shop foreman signs the bottom weekly. That’s it.
Training is the other half. Every tech who touches the equipment should be able to explain why the locks matter, why arm restraints exist, and how to lower a lift in a power failure without dropping it. When to Stop and Call Us
Some findings are “note it and schedule it,” and some mean tag the bay out immediately. Stop using the lift now if: a lock won’t engage or holds only on one side, you can see broken strands in any cable, an anchor bolt turns without torquing, there’s a visible crack in a weld or column, the carriage drops noticeably when the pump shuts off, fluid is streaming rather than weeping, or the unit lifts unevenly enough that a vehicle shifts on the arms. None of those are field-fix items for a general tech with a wrench and optimism.
