Car lift safety lock troubleshooting is usually the first call we get when a shop owner walks in on a Monday morning and finds a lift that won’t lower, or worse, one that dropped a few inches before the locks caught. We’ve been installing and servicing lifts across Iowa long enough to know that safety lock problems are rarely mysterious once you know where to look. Most of the time it’s a bent linkage, a dirty pawl, worn cable, or a release cable that’s stretched out of adjustment. This guide walks through the common failure points, how we diagnose them in the field, and when it’s time to stop troubleshooting and call a professional.

Why Safety Locks Fail in the First Place
Every two-post and four-post lift we service uses some version of a mechanical safety lock: a spring-loaded pawl or dog that drops into a rack or ladder as the carriage rises, catching the load if hydraulic pressure is ever lost. That’s the whole point of car lift safety lock troubleshooting — the lock is the backup system that keeps a vehicle from free-falling if a hose bursts or a seal fails. Because it’s mechanical and it lives outside in shop dust, oil mist, and Iowa winter humidity, it’s one of the first things to get gummed up or corroded.
The most common root causes we find are dirt and grease buildup on the pawl pivot, a release cable that has stretched or frayed, a bent or worn locking dog that no longer seats cleanly in the rack, and rust forming on the ladder itself after months of road salt tracked in on tires. None of these are usually catastrophic, but every one of them can make a lift feel unpredictable, and unpredictable is not a word you want anywhere near a two-ton vehicle over your head.
The Lift Won’t Release From the Locks
This is the single most common complaint we hear, and car lift safety lock troubleshooting almost always starts here. If you raise the lift and try to lower it but the arms won’t drop, the pawls are likely still engaged in the rack even after you’ve pulled the release handle. Check the release cable first — over time these cables stretch, and what used to be enough pull to lift the pawl out of the rack no longer travels far enough. A quick adjustment at the cable clevis or turnbuckle often solves it.
If the cable looks fine, inspect the pawl itself. Grease and grime can cake up around the pivot pin, effectively gluing the pawl in the down position even when the cable pulls correctly. A shop rag, a wire brush, and some dry lubricant (never grease, which just attracts more dirt) usually frees it right up. On older lifts we sometimes find the pivot pin itself is worn or bent, which requires replacement rather than cleaning.
The Lift Won’t Engage the Locks at All
The flip side is more concerning: a lift that raises smoothly but the pawls never drop into the rack, meaning you have no mechanical backup if hydraulics fail. This is a stop-work situation, not a minor inconvenience. Nine times out of ten this comes down to a broken or overstretched pawl spring that no longer has the tension to snap the dog into place, or a locking dog that’s worn down enough it can’t catch the rack teeth cleanly anymore.
We’ve also seen this caused by a bent carriage or misaligned column, especially on older lifts that have been bumped by a vehicle or forklift over the years. If the carriage isn’t tracking square in the column, the pawl and rack simply don’t line up close enough to engage. This isn’t something to shim or force — it needs a proper alignment check, and in some cases column replacement. Do not run a lift in this condition.
Uneven or One-Sided Locking
Sometimes one side of a two-post lift locks fine while the other doesn’t catch, or catches a rung later than its partner. This creates a tilted, unstable platform even though it looks locked from a distance. We usually trace this to unequal cable tension between the two columns on cable-synchronized lifts, or a lock rod that’s bent on one side of an equalized system. It can also happen when one column has more debris buildup than the other simply because of shop layout — the side closer to the door collects more road grime and salt.
The fix depends on the lift design. On cable-equalized lifts, resynchronizing tension across both sides usually restores even locking. On lifts with a mechanical equalizing rod connecting the two lock mechanisms, a bent rod needs straightening or replacement — never bending it back cold on a shop floor, since that can weaken the metal further. Uneven locking is exactly the kind of intermittent, hard-to-pin-down issue that benefits from a trained eye, which is where a lot of our car lift safety lock troubleshooting calls end up.
Rust, Corrosion, and the Iowa Weather Factor
We can’t talk about lift maintenance in this state without talking about salt. Iowa winters mean salt and brine get tracked into shop bays on every tire, and that moisture works its way into rack teeth, pawl pivots, and cable housings. Over a few winters, a lock system that was smooth as new can develop enough surface rust to hang up intermittently — sometimes locking fine, sometimes not, which is worse than a lock that fails consistently because it’s harder to diagnose.
Our advice is simple: wipe down the columns and rack area weekly during winter months, apply a dry PTFE-based lubricant rather than oil-based grease, and inspect cables for fraying every month rather than waiting for the annual service. A five-minute wipe-down habit prevents most of the corrosion-related lock issues we get called out for between January and April.
DIY Checks vs. Calling a Professional
There’s a real line between what a shop team can safely handle and what needs a certified technician. Cleaning debris off a pawl, checking cable tension visually, and lubricating an accessible pivot point are reasonable DIY steps in car lift safety lock troubleshooting. But any job that involves disassembling the lock mechanism, replacing springs under tension, straightening bent components, or realigning a carriage in the column should go to someone trained on that specific lift.
