Why a Certified Used Lift Inspection Checklist Matters

A used lift is only worth what it can safely lift, and that number isn’t printed on the nameplate anymore once a machine has years of service on it. We’ve walked into shops where a lift rated for 10,000 lbs had been quietly compromised by a stretched cable or a bent arm restrictor, and nobody knew until we pointed it out. A certified used lift inspection checklist exists to catch exactly that gap between what the lift says it can do and what it can actually do safely today.

This matters most in three situations: you’re buying a used lift for your own shop, you’re selling one and need to prove it’s sound, or you’re an inspector signing off on equipment for insurance or OSHA purposes. In every case, the checklist has to be thorough enough to hold up if something goes wrong later. We treat every inspection as if we’re going to have to defend it in writing, because sometimes we do. That’s the standard we hold every certified used lift inspection checklist to, and it’s why we don’t shortcut steps even on lifts that look brand new.

Structural and Weld Inspection

We start at the frame because that’s where the biggest problems live and the least gets noticed. Every column, base plate, and cross brace gets checked for cracks, especially around welds and bolted connections where stress concentrates over years of use. Rust is expected on an older lift, but rust that’s flaking away structural steel or bubbling up through a weld seam is a different story entirely, and it fails the inspection on the spot.

We also check for any sign the lift has been modified from its original engineering. Field-welded repairs, mismatched hardware, or non-factory brackets are red flags because we don’t know what load calculations, if any, went into that change. A certified used lift inspection checklist has to treat unauthorized modifications as an automatic fail until the manufacturer or a qualified engineer signs off. Base plate anchoring gets its own close look too, since anchors loosen over time with vibration and thermal cycling in a slab that’s seen a decade of freeze-thaw. Loose or missing anchors are one of the most common failures we find on lifts that otherwise pass everything else, and it’s a cheap, fast fix once caught.

Cable, Chain, and Pulley Condition

Cables are the single most common thing we replace on a used lift, and they’re also the easiest thing for an untrained eye to miss. We look for broken strands, kinks, corrosion, and uneven wear where the cable rides over a sheave. Even one broken wire in a load-bearing cable is enough to fail it under most manufacturer specs, because a single broken strand tells you the whole cable’s fatigue life is compromised.

Pulleys and sheaves get checked for grooving, cracking, and proper alignment, since a misaligned pulley chews through a new cable just as fast as an old one wore out the last set. On chain-driven lifts we check for stretch, rust pitting, and proper master link engagement. Anywhere a lift uses equalizer cables between posts, we verify equal tension side to side, because unequal tension means one side is carrying more load than it should and the platform won’t sit level under a vehicle. Any part of this checklist involving cables gets documented with measurements, not just a pass or fail note, so whoever reads the report later understands exactly how close to the limit that component was.

Hydraulic System and Cylinder Check

Every hydraulic lift gets a leak-down test as part of our process. We raise it to full height, hold it under load if possible, and watch for drift over a set period. Any noticeable drop means a seal or valve issue that has to be resolved before the lift passes. We also inspect the cylinder rod itself for pitting, scoring, or bent shafts, since a damaged rod chews through seals almost immediately after a repair.

Hoses and fittings get checked for cracking, weeping, and proper routing away from moving parts and heat sources. We also verify the safety valve system is functioning correctly, whether that’s a velocity fuse, a lowering control valve, or a similar device depending on the lift design. This is one of the areas where a certified used lift inspection checklist really earns its name, because hydraulic problems aren’t always visible from the outside and require an actual functional test rather than a visual scan.

Locking Mechanisms and Safety Devices

Mechanical locks are the last line of defense if hydraulic pressure ever fails, so we test every locking pawl, latch, and safety catch through a full range of motion. We’re checking that the lock engages positively at every stop position and that the release mechanism works smoothly without binding or requiring excessive force. A lock that skips a position or hangs up under load doesn’t get a pass, period.

We also test any interlock systems tying arm restraints, door sensors, or lockout switches into the lift’s operation. Two-post lifts especially rely on arm restraint mechanisms to keep the lift from being raised with the arms improperly positioned, and those restraints wear out just like anything else with moving parts. On four-post and scissor lifts we check the rollstop and locking bar systems the same way. If you’ve read a used lift inspection checklist before, this is usually the section that gets rushed, but it’s the one most directly tied to preventing a lift from dropping unexpectedly, so we never rush it.

Electrical System and Controls

We inspect the motor, wiring, and control panel for exposed wire, corrosion at connections, and proper grounding. Motors that run hot, hum excessively, or trip breakers repeatedly get flagged even if they technically still function, because that’s usually an early warning of a bigger failure coming. Emergency stop buttons and up/down controls get functionally tested, not just visually checked, since a sticky switch is a real hazard on a machine this heavy.

On lifts with electronic control boards or sensors, we check for error codes, loose connectors, and moisture intrusion, which is common in shops that get washed down or see a lot of winter slush tracked in. Any lift being moved from one facility to another also needs its electrical setup verified against the new location’s voltage and phase, since a certified used lift inspection checklist has to confirm the lift will actually work correctly once reinstalled, not just that it worked fine where it came from.

Documentation, Load Testing, and Final Certification

The last piece of any real inspection is the paperwork, and it matters as much as the mechanical work. We record serial numbers, manufacture date, service history if available, and every finding from the inspection with photos where relevant. If the lift passes, we issue a written certification stating what was inspected, what standard it was measured against, and the date, so the owner has something concrete to show an insurer, an OSHA inspector, or a future buyer.

Where possible, we perform an actual load test at or near rated capacity rather than relying on inspection alone, because some failures only show up under real weight.
