Choosing a lift for a home shop is one of those decisions that looks simple until you actually start measuring your garage and pricing equipment. We get calls every week from guys in Ames, Des Moines, and small towns across Iowa who bought a lift online, got it home, and realized it either didn’t fit their ceiling or their slab wasn’t rated for it. Start With Ceiling Height, Not the Lift Catalog

Before you fall in love with a particular model, grab a tape measure. Ceiling height is the single most common reason home shop lift purchases go wrong. A two-post lift needs enough overhead clearance for the vehicle to rise fully with the arms extended, plus a safety margin. We’ve had homeowners order a lift that would have needed to break through drywall to work correctly, and by then the box was already sitting in their driveway.

If your garage has 9 to 10 feet of clearance, most standard two-post and four-post lifts will work fine. Under that, you’re looking at low-rise or mid-rise scissor lifts, or a specific low-headroom two-post configuration. This is exactly why choosing a lift for a home shop starts with a tape measure, not a wish list. We ask every homeowner for their ceiling height, garage door height, and any obstructions like ductwork or garage door tracks before we ever recommend a model. Skipping this step is the fastest way to end up returning a lift or cutting into your ceiling.

Know Your Slab Before You Order Anything

Your concrete floor matters just as much as ceiling height when choosing a lift for a home shop. Two-post and four-post lifts anchor into the slab, and manufacturers specify a minimum thickness and cure time — typically 4 inches of properly cured concrete, sometimes more depending on the lift’s capacity. Older Iowa homes and detached garages built decades ago often have thinner or cracked slabs that were never poured with a car lift in mind.

We recommend having your slab inspected, or at minimum knowing its age and thickness, before committing to a bolt-down lift. If your floor doesn’t meet spec, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options — it means a mobile column lift or a low-rise portable model that doesn’t require anchoring might be the better fit. We’d rather tell you that upfront than have you deal with a lift that won’t pass a safety inspection later. Anchoring done wrong is one of the most common failure points we see on home installs, and it’s almost always avoidable with a few minutes of floor assessment.

Two-Post vs. Four-Post vs. Scissor: Match the Lift to the Work

The type of work you do in your home shop should drive the decision more than price alone. Two-post lifts give you full access underneath the vehicle for brake jobs, exhaust work, and suspension — they’re the go-to for anyone doing real mechanical work. Four-post lifts are more forgiving on alignment and easier to drive onto, and they double as storage lifts if you’re short on garage space and want to park a second car above your daily driver.

Scissor and mid-rise lifts are a solid middle ground for home shops with lower ceilings or smaller footprints, though they don’t always give you the same full underbody access. A lift bought for one oil change ends up disappointing owners who later want to do brakes or transmission work. Buy for the work you’ll actually do.

Weight Capacity: Buy for Your Heaviest Vehicle, Not Your Average One

A common mistake is sizing a lift to the sedan in the driveway and forgetting about the pickup truck, project car, or someday-vehicle sitting in the back of your mind. Lift capacity ratings account for the vehicle’s total weight plus center of gravity, and trucks and SUVs load lifts very differently than passenger cars. We generally point home shop owners toward a 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity lift unless they’re certain they’ll only ever lift lighter vehicles.

It costs relatively little more upfront to step up a capacity tier, and it saves you from outgrowing your equipment in a year or two. This is a place where we tell people not to cut corners just to save a little on the purchase price — a lift rated too close to your vehicle’s actual weight isn’t a safe long-term solution for a home shop.

Power, Voltage, and What Your Garage Can Actually Support

Most home shop lifts run on standard single-phase power, but you still need to confirm your garage’s electrical setup before you order. Some models need a dedicated 220V circuit, and older Iowa garages sometimes only have basic 110V service run to them. Adding a circuit is a manageable project for an electrician, but it’s much easier to plan for before the lift arrives than to discover the problem on install day.

We always ask about garage wiring during the quoting process because it directly affects which models we’d even recommend. If your garage is on the smaller or older side of the spectrum, this detail can be just as decisive as ceiling height when choosing a lift for a home shop. Don’t assume your garage is ready — a five-minute check of your breaker panel saves a delayed install.

Installation Matters as Much as the Lift Itself

A quality lift installed poorly is a safety risk, full stop. Anchoring depth, leveling, cable and hydraulic hookup, and safety lock testing all need to be done correctly, and it’s not a job we’d recommend tackling solo unless you have real mechanical and electrical experience. We install lifts across Iowa and consistently find that the installs causing problems later were DIY jobs where a step got skipped or a bolt pattern got fudged to fit an imperfect slab.

We’ve seen homeowners budget tightly for the lift itself and then get surprised by freight and install costs that weren’t part of their plan.
