Why Choosing the Right Lift for Your RV Shop Starts With Weight, Not Space

Most shops start by measuring their bay and asking what will fit. With RV work, we tell people to flip that order. Start with the heaviest, longest unit you expect to service — a diesel pusher, a Class A with slide-outs, a loaded fifth wheel — and work backward from its GVW. A lot of Class A motorhomes run well north of 20,000 lbs, and once you add fluids, cargo, and a full water tank, you can be looking at numbers that a typical two-post car lift isn’t remotely rated for. This is the single biggest mistake we see in choosing the right lift for your rv shop: buying capacity for the RVs a shop services today instead of the ones it’ll be asked to service in three years.

Once you know your top-end weight, the equipment conversation gets a lot simpler. Four-post lifts dominate RV work because their runways can be extended to match long wheelbases, and the drive-on design doesn’t require finding lift points on a frame that may be wrapped in fiberglass or slide-out mechanisms. Mobile column lifts are the other serious contender, especially for shops that need to lift multiple axle configurations or want the flexibility to service buses and trucks on the same floor. Both options solve the weight and length problem that stops standard lifts cold.

Four-Post vs. Mobile Columns for RV Bays

Four-post lifts are the default answer for a lot of RV shops, and for good reason. They’re simpler to operate, cheaper per pound of capacity than mobile columns, and the extended-length runway platforms are purpose-built for motorhomes and long trailers. If your shop does mostly alignments, brake work, undercarriage inspection, and general service on RVs that come in on their own wheels, a heavy-duty 4-post is usually the most cost-effective route.

Mobile columns earn their keep in a different scenario. If you’re servicing RVs with tag axles, dual rear wheels, or unusual axle spacing — or if your shop also handles box trucks, buses, or ag equipment — a set of mobile columns (typically bought in sets of four, six, or eight) lets you lift by the wheels regardless of frame configuration. They also don’t require a fixed installation footprint, which matters if your bay layout has to flex between RV work and other jobs. The tradeoff is a higher per-unit cost and a slower setup routine compared to driving onto a fixed 4-post runway. Runway Length and Wheelbase Reality

Standard car lift runways run in the 12 to 14 foot range. That’s not close to enough for most Class A and Class C motorhomes, whose wheelbases alone can stretch past that before you even count front and rear overhang. Choosing the right lift for your rv shop means specifying extended-length platforms — often 16 to 20+ feet — or a mobile column setup that isn’t limited by a fixed runway at all. Measure your longest expected unit bumper to bumper, not axle to axle, because clearance at the shop’s front and rear walls matters just as much as the lift itself.

Width matters too. Motorhomes run wider than passenger vehicles and pickups, and RV mirrors, slide-outs, and awnings add real dimension you have to account for when planning column or post placement. We’ve seen shops order a lift that technically meets the weight rating only to find the posts sit exactly where the entry door swings open. Get your measurements — including mirror-to-mirror width and slide-out extension — before you finalize post spacing.

Ceiling Height and Bay Clearance

This is the constraint that catches the most RV shops off guard. A 4-post lift raising a 12-foot-tall Class A motorhome needs enough overhead room to clear roof-mounted AC units, satellite domes, and vents at full lift height — and building codes plus practical technician access mean you usually want a few feet of buffer above that. Before ordering, measure your actual ceiling height, note any HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, or door tracks hanging down, and calculate your lift’s platform height plus vehicle height plus rooftop accessories against that number. It’s a math problem, and it’s one that has to happen before the lift ships, not after installation day.

If ceiling height is genuinely limited, that’s another point in favor of mobile columns, since techs can often work underneath a partially raised RV without needing full standing clearance on top — you’re not always raising it to maximum height for every job. It’s also worth thinking about how the lift interacts with your bay doors; a fully extended runway lift plus a long motorhome can mean the vehicle needs to be positioned before the door closes, which affects heating and cooling in an Iowa winter more than people expect.

Concrete and Anchoring for Heavy Static Loads

RV lifts put more sustained load on a smaller footprint than most shop floors were built for, especially with 4-post units bearing weight through four fixed columns. Before installation, we check slab thickness, cure time, and rebar placement against the lift manufacturer’s engineering spec — not a generic guess. Many older Iowa shop floors were poured for lighter-duty repair work and need reinforcement or a dedicated pour before a heavy-duty RV lift goes in. Skipping this step is how you end up with cracked concrete and a lift that’s out of level within a year.

Mobile columns are more forgiving here since the load is distributed across whatever floor position each column sits on and they can be relocated, but they still need a flat, sound surface rated for the point loads involved. Either way, this is a step we handle as part of installation rather than leaving to guesswork, because a lift is only as stable as the floor underneath it.

Hydraulic Power and Lift Speed for High-Volume Shops

If your RV shop turns multiple units a day during peak season, lift cycle time adds up fast. Heavier-duty hydraulic power units with larger reservoirs and higher-flow pumps raise big loads faster and run cooler under repeated use, which matters when you’re lifting 20,000+ lb units back to back all afternoon. Cheaper power units built for lighter-duty lifts will work, technically, but they’ll run hot and wear faster under RV-scale duty cycles. This is a spot where spending a bit more up front on the drive system pays back in fewer service calls down the road.

We also see shops underestimate how much airline and hydraulic hose length they’ll need once posts or columns are spaced for a full-size motorhome instead of a sedan. Longer runs mean more attention to fluid volume and pressure drop, which is another reason to have your lift’s hydraulic system engineered for the actual footprint you’re installing rather than assumed off a standard spec sheet.

Getting the Sizing Right Before You Order

Choosing the right lift for your rv shop isn’t a catalog decision — it’s a measurement-and-math decision that has to happen before equipment ships.
