Choosing a two post lift for your shop is the single decision that shapes how every bay in that building works for the next twenty years, and we watch people get it wrong for the same handful of reasons every year. Somebody buys on price, or buys on capacity they will never use, or buys a lift that will not physically fit under the trusses they already have. Start With the Vehicles You Actually Lift, Not the Ones You Might

The first question we ask is not “what capacity do you want” — it is “what rolled through your door last week?” A general repair shop in a small Iowa town might see half-ton pickups all day with the occasional three-quarter-ton diesel. That is a 10,000 lb lift with the right arm configuration, and a 10,000 lb lift will serve it beautifully for two decades. A fleet shop doing F-350s, Transits, and box vans needs 12,000 or 15,000 lb and, more importantly, needs the taller columns and longer arms that come with those models. Capacity alone is a bad proxy for fit.

Here is where people overbuy. A 15,000 lb lift is not a “safer” 10,000 lb lift. It is a physically larger machine with wider column spacing, heavier arms that are more awkward to swing under a Civic, and a taller footprint that may not clear your door track. If ninety percent of your work is passenger cars and light trucks, a well-built 10K with three-stage front arms will handle more of your workload with less daily hassle. We would rather sell you the right 10K and have you call us in five years for a second bay than sell you a 15K you resent every time you spot a compact. Under-lifting is dangerous; over-lifting is just expensive and annoying.

Measure Your Ceiling Before You Fall in Love With a Model

Ceiling height kills more lift orders than budget does. A standard overhead two post lift needs roughly 12 feet of clear height to the underside of the crossbar structure, and “clear” means below lights, below trusses, below the garage door track when it is open, and below any conduit somebody ran in 1978. We have shown up to installs in central Iowa where the customer measured to the peak of the roof and came up eighteen inches short at the actual obstruction. That is a bad day for everybody.

If you are working with 10 or 11 feet, you are looking at a baseplate (clearfloor) model, where the hydraulic lines and equalization cables run through a channel at the floor instead of over the top. Baseplate lifts solve the height problem and they work well — the tradeoff is a low crossover you step over all day and a slightly harder time rolling a transmission jack straight through. Overhead models give you a clean floor and a built-in shutoff bar that stops a tall vehicle before it hits the ceiling. Neither is wrong. When choosing a two post lift for your shop, measure to the lowest permanent obstruction in the bay footprint, write that number down, and give it to whoever is quoting you.

Concrete Is Not a Detail — It Is the Foundation of the Whole Decision

Most 10,000 lb two post lifts require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier models want more. That sounds simple until you find out the slab in your leased building is three and a half inches over gravel, or it has a control joint running exactly where the column anchors need to land. We core-test when there is any doubt, because anchoring into thin or cracked concrete is how columns walk under load.

The fix is usually not dramatic. Cutting out a pad section and pouring a proper footing under each column is a one-day job for a concrete crew and costs a fraction of the lift. What is expensive is finding out after the lift is on the truck. We also look at slab slope — a lot of shop floors pitch toward a drain, and a column set out of plumb will make the carriages bind over time. Shimming is normal and fine; ignoring a half-inch of drop across the bay is not. If you are still in the planning stage of a new building, tell your concrete contractor where the lifts are going before the pour. It costs nothing then and thousands later.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric: The Door-Opening Question

Symmetric lifts place the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between them. That geometry loads long-wheelbase trucks and vans beautifully and gives you great access to the middle of the chassis. The catch is that the driver’s door lands right at the column, so on a passenger car you are squeezing out of a partly opened door.

Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly thirty degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, sitting the car back so the doors swing clear of the posts. For a shop that lives on brakes, alignments, and general car service, that door clearance saves you a hundred small irritations a day. Most modern lifts from Rotary and Challenger are versymmetric — the arms let you configure either way, which is the honest answer for a mixed shop. If your work is heavily truck-weighted, run it symmetric. If you are a car-focused independent or a specialty shop, run it asymmetric. Arms, Adapters, and the Parts You Will Actually Touch Every Day

Nobody gets excited about arm specs, and then they spend the next decade cursing them. Three-stage front arms are worth every dollar on a lift that sees short-wheelbase cars — they retract far enough to reach a Mini’s pinch welds and extend far enough to reach a crew cab’s frame rail. Two-stage fronts save money and cost you reach.

Then there is the adapter kit. Stack adapters, truck adapters, frame cradles, and low-profile flip-up pads are cheap compared to the lift and they determine what you can safely put in the air. We keep them in stock because the number one call we get after an install is “I need taller adapters for the lifted trucks.” Buy the tall stack set up front. Also look at pad design: screw-up pads adjust in seconds; flip-up pads are faster but limit height range. And check what the arm restraints look like — gear-type restraints that lock automatically are one of the real differentiators between a professional-grade lift and a bargain import. Choosing a Two Post Lift for Your Shop When Parts Support Matters More Than Badge

We service lifts every week that were bought online from a brand that no longer answers the phone. A cable set, a lock ladder, a hydraulic cylinder, a carriage slide block — these are wear items on any lift, and on a good one you can get them next week. On an orphaned import you may be measuring cables and fabricating. That is the real long-term cost difference between tiers, and it rarely shows up in the initial quote.

Installation, Inspection, and What Happens After the Truck Leaves

A two post lift is a piece of life-safety equipment, and the installation is not a weekend project for the guy who is handy. Anchor torque specs, column plumb, cable equalization, lock synchronization, and a proper load test all matter, and ALI recommends annual inspection by a qualified inspector for a reason. Budget for the whole picture: the lift, freight, any concrete work, electrical (most single-phase 220V units need a dedicated circuit), installation, and a spare cable set on the shelf.
