Why Class 5 6 Service Equipment Needs Its Own Category

A lot of shop owners assume that if their two-post car lift is rated for 12,000 lbs, they can just push it a little and handle a smaller box truck. That thinking gets people hurt. Class 5 6 service equipment has to account for wheelbase, axle weight distribution, and the fact that many of these vehicles carry uneven loads — a delivery van loaded on one side, a chassis cab with a heavy PTO attachment, or a step van with a raised roofline that changes the center of gravity. Standard passenger-vehicle lift arms and adapters simply don’t reach or clear correctly on these platforms.

We spec class 5 6 service equipment based on GVWR, arm reach, and drive-through clearance, not just a capacity sticker. That means longer arms, taller lift columns on four-post configurations, and in many cases in-ground or mobile column lifts rated specifically for medium-duty trucks. We’ve walked into shops in eastern Iowa where the lift on the floor was rated correctly on paper but physically couldn’t reach the pinch points on a Class 6 chassis without an extension kit. Getting the reach and the rating right at the same time is the whole job.

Mobile Column Lifts for Medium-Duty Bays

For shops handling a mix of Class 5, Class 6, and occasional straight trucks, mobile column lifts are often the smartest class 5 6 service equipment investment we recommend. A set of four, six, or eight wireless columns can lift a vehicle from any set of wheel positions, which matters a lot when your fleet mix changes week to week. You’re not locked into a fixed wheelbase like you are with a permanent two-post or four-post installation.

In-ground lifts keep your floor clear for other work and give techs full underbody access without arm interference — a real advantage on trucks with dual exhaust runs, auxiliary fuel tanks, or PTO equipment hanging low.

Four-post lifts, on the other hand, double as alignment or storage platforms when they’re not being used for service, which a lot of Iowa fleet operators like because the equipment earns its keep even on slower weeks. Actual loaded weight, especially on service trucks carrying tools, welders, or hydraulic equipment, often runs higher than the factory rating assumes. We always recommend building in margin — if your heaviest regular vehicle sits near 20,000 lbs loaded, don’t spec equipment rated right at that line.

We also check pad spacing, arm swing, and drive-through height against your actual fleet roster, not a generic spec sheet. A Class 6 box truck and a Class 6 flatbed can have wildly different frame contact points, and class 5 6 service equipment has to be adjustable enough to handle both without a tech improvising with blocks or pads that weren’t designed for the job.

Fleet, Municipal, and Diesel Shop Considerations

Municipal fleets, school district garages, and independent diesel shops across Iowa all lean on us for slightly different reasons. Municipal and school fleets often run older Class 5 and Class 6 trucks with irregular maintenance histories, so equipment needs to tolerate rust, uneven frames, and non-standard aftermarket bodies. Independent diesel shops tend to want faster cycle times because they’re billing hourly, so mobile columns or quick-rising four-post units matter more than pure capacity headroom.

EV and Electrified Medium-Duty Trucks Are Coming

Class 5 and Class 6 electrified trucks are already on Iowa roads in delivery fleets, and that changes what class 5 6 service equipment needs to support. In-ground lifts need proper excavation and drainage; mobile columns need level, adequately rated floors; four-post units need anchor bolts rated for the concrete you actually have, not the concrete a spec sheet assumes.
