EV service shop equipment is turning into one of the most common phone calls we get these days, and it usually starts the same way: a shop owner has already fixed a hybrid or two, an EV rolled in for tires or a suspension noise, and now they’re wondering what they actually need to do this work safely and profitably. The short answer is that EV work doesn’t require you to gut your bay and start over, but it does require some specific gear you may not already own.

Start With Your Lift, Not Your Scan Tool

Every shop owner we talk to wants to jump straight to diagnostic tools when they think about ev service shop equipment, but the lift underneath the car matters more. EV battery packs run anywhere from roughly 900 to 1,600 pounds depending on the model, and that weight sits low and spread across the floor pan rather than concentrated near the engine like a combustion vehicle. A two-post lift with the wrong pad spread or a symmetric arm setup that doesn’t reach the factory-rated pickup points can put a car in a genuinely dangerous position.

We generally point shops toward a heavier-duty two-post rated well above the vehicle weight, or a four-post if the shop is also doing alignments or long-term storage on EVs. Rotary and Challenger both build models that Iowa shops already trust for heavy trucks, and those same platforms handle EV weight and pickup point spread just fine once the arms and adapters are matched to the vehicle. If you’re already running a Rotary two-post that’s a few years old, it’s worth having us check your capacity rating before you commit to EV work rather than assuming it’ll be fine.

Battery Service Lifts and Low-Profile Jacks

Pulling a battery pack is not a job you do with a floor jack and a prayer. This is the piece of ev service shop equipment that catches shops off guard because it’s not something a typical gas-engine shop ever needed. A dedicated battery service lift, sometimes called a low-profile transmission jack or a purpose-built EV battery table, lets a technician lower a pack straight down and roll it out level and controlled instead of fighting an unbalanced load on a standard jack.

These come in manual and powered versions, and the powered ones with adjustable platforms are worth the extra cost if you expect any real volume of EV work. We’ve seen shops try to make do with engine hoists and shop-built cradles, and it works until the day it doesn’t. A battery pack shifting even a few inches during removal can damage cooling lines, high-voltage connectors, or the pack itself, turning a routine service into an expensive comeback. If you’re doing this occasionally rather than daily, a shared or mobile column setup can make more financial sense than a dedicated fixed battery lift.

Insulated Tools and PPE Aren’t Optional

High-voltage systems in EVs run at 400 to 800 volts, and that’s not a number to get casual about. Insulated hand tools rated for the voltage you’re working around, Class 0 rubber gloves with a current leather protector layer, voltage-rated multimeters, and arc-flash-rated face shields all need to be part of your ev service shop equipment list before a technician touches a high-voltage system. This isn’t optional gear that sits in a drawer for the rare occasion — it needs to be part of daily rotation with regular inspection and glove testing.

Shops that skip this step aren’t usually being careless on purpose; they just haven’t priced it out yet and assume regular electrical PPE will cover it. It won’t. We recommend budgeting for this alongside your lift purchase, not after, because a lift with no way to safely disconnect and service the high-voltage system underneath it doesn’t actually solve your EV problem. Training matters just as much as the gear — a tech with the right gloves but no hands-on training in lockout procedures is still a liability.

Charging and Diagnostic Infrastructure

Beyond the physical lift work, a shop taking on EVs needs charging infrastructure of its own, at minimum a Level 2 charger to top off vehicles between diagnostic steps or after a battery service. Combine that with a scan tool that actually covers EV-specific modules — battery management, thermal systems, regenerative braking — rather than just generic OBD-II codes. This is one area where ev service shop equipment spending can spiral if you’re not careful, since scan tool subscriptions and software licenses add up fast across multiple brands.

We tell shops to figure out which two or three EV brands they’re actually seeing in their bays before buying every diagnostic license on the market. A shop near a Ford dealership network is going to see different vehicles than one near a Tesla service corridor, and your tooling budget should follow the traffic you actually get, not the traffic you imagine you might get someday.

Floor Layout and Ventilation Considerations

EVs don’t produce exhaust, which changes ventilation needs, but thermal runaway events involve toxic gases that a standard shop exhaust system isn’t designed to handle. If your shop plans to do meaningful EV volume, a dedicated quarantine or isolation bay with fire suppression appropriate for lithium battery fires is worth planning into your floor layout now rather than retrofitting later. We’ve helped a few central Iowa shops rework their bay assignments so the EV-capable lift sits near an exterior wall with easier ventilation access.

This kind of planning also affects where your battery service lift and charging stations physically sit relative to your existing two-post and four-post lifts. Cramming everything into one corner because that’s where the outlet already is tends to create workflow problems down the road. Think about traffic flow for a car coming in for battery service versus a routine tire rotation on a similar EV, since those two jobs don’t need the same equipment nearby.

The mistake we see most often is a shop trying to become fully EV-capable in one purchase order. Ev service shop equipment doesn’t need to be an all-or-nothing investment. Start with a properly rated lift, add insulated PPE and basic training, and get a scan tool that covers your actual customer base. That’s enough to safely take on tire work, suspension, and basic diagnostics on most EVs rolling through an Iowa shop today.

Battery service lifts, dedicated isolation bays, and multi-brand diagnostic suites can come in a second or third phase once you’ve confirmed the volume justifies it.
