Choosing the right car lift for your shop is one of those decisions that either pays you back every single day or quietly costs you money for the next fifteen years. Start With What Actually Rolls Through Your Door

Every conversation we have about lift selection starts the same way: what do you work on, and what percentage of the time? Not what you hope to work on someday. What is on your bay floor this week. A shop that runs 80 percent passenger cars and sedans has completely different needs than one that sees a steady diet of F-250s, Sprinter vans, and the occasional dually. We have watched owners buy a 9,000 lb asymmetric two-post because it was the best deal available, then spend the next two years turning away the trucks that make up the most profitable work in their market.

Write down your ten heaviest jobs from the last month and their curb weights, then add a margin. A loaded three-quarter-ton pickup can push past 8,000 lb before you add a service body or a full fuel tank. That is why we generally steer general repair shops in Iowa toward 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity as the baseline rather than the minimum, and toward 15,000 lb and up if fleet or light-duty commercial work is in the mix. Capacity headroom costs less at purchase than it does in lost tickets, and a lift running well below its rating simply lasts longer. Measure Your Ceiling Before You Fall in Love With a Model

Ceiling height kills more lift orders than price does. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam typically needs somewhere in the 12 to 14 foot range depending on the model and column height, and that is measured to the lowest obstruction — not the peak of the roof. Sprinkler heads, gas lines, unit heaters, conduit runs, and garage door tracks all count. We have measured shops in old Iowa main-street buildings where the drop ceiling looked generous until we found a steel beam running the width of the bay at 11 feet 6 inches.

If you are short on height, you are not out of options. A baseplate two-post moves the equalization cables and hydraulic lines down through a floor-mounted plate instead of an overhead bridge, which buys you real clearance at the cost of a small floor obstruction between the columns. Low-ceiling four-post models exist as well, and mid-rise scissor lifts fit under almost anything while still giving you brake, tire, and suspension access. When we come out to measure, we bring a laser and we shoot the actual low point, then we check door swing and the arc of your overhead door as it opens. Choosing the right car lift for your shop is largely a geometry problem, and geometry does not negotiate.

Concrete Is Not a Detail — It Is the Foundation

Anchors only hold what the slab lets them hold. Most two-post manufacturers, Rotary and Challenger included, call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many higher-capacity models want more thickness and a specified cure. Plenty of the older buildings we work in around central Iowa were poured decades ago with no documentation whatsoever, and what we find under the epoxy is sometimes three inches over gravel with a crack running right where a column wants to sit.

We core test when there is any doubt. It takes a small hole and an hour, and it tells you whether you are installing on schedule or pouring a footing pad first. Cutting out a section and pouring a proper pad with the right depth and cure time adds days and cost to a project, but it is not optional — anchors pulling out of thin concrete under load is the failure mode nobody survives twice. Expansion joints matter too: anchors set too close to a joint or a slab edge lose holding power, so column placement sometimes has to shift a few inches from the ideal layout. We would rather have that conversation during a site visit than on install day with a truck full of equipment sitting in your lot.

Two-Post, Four-Post, Scissor, or Mobile Column

Style follows work type. A two-post gives you full wheels-free access and the cleanest underside working position, which is why it is the default for general repair, brakes, exhaust, and suspension. A four-post is a drive-on, which makes it the better choice for alignment work, long-term storage, transmission and driveline service where you want the suspension loaded, and any shop where techs of varying experience levels are running the equipment — there is less that can go wrong on a drive-on.

Scissor and mid-rise lifts earn their keep in tire and quick-service environments and in bays with no ceiling to speak of. They set up fast, they clear low doors, and the full-rise versions handle a surprising amount of general work. Mobile column lifts are the answer when you need to service buses, RVs, box trucks, or medium-duty units without pouring a dedicated inground bay — you roll them where you need them and store them against a wall. Bay Layout, Traffic Flow, and the Bays You Are Not Building Yet

We ask owners to sketch the whole floor, not just the bay in question. Where does the car come in, where does the tech’s toolbox live, where does the parts runner walk, and where will the second lift go in three years when the work justifies it? Choosing the right car lift for your shop means thinking about the bay next door. Column spacing, door width, and the distance between adjacent lifts determine whether two techs can work at the same time without dancing around each other.

Asymmetric two-post designs rotate the columns so door swing improves — the driver can actually get out of a sedan with the lift raised — while symmetric designs center the vehicle and handle longer wheelbases and heavier trucks more comfortably. Some models offer both configurations from the same arm set. We also look at where the power drop is, because running a new circuit across a finished shop is its own expense, and at whether the hydraulic power unit lands on the side where your air and electrical already live. These are small decisions that decide whether the bay feels good to work in every day or feels like a compromise you notice constantly.

Parts Availability and Service Beat Spec Sheets

Two lifts can look identical on paper and be worlds apart five years in. What separates them is whether you can get an equalization cable, a slack safety spring, a lock ladder, a cylinder seal kit, or a lowering valve in two days or two months. When we recommend Rotary or Challenger for commercial work, part of the reason is that the parts pipeline is real and the documentation exists.

Ask any supplier three questions before you buy: who installs it, who services it when it fails, and where do the wear parts come from. If the answer to all three is a phone tree in another time zone, factor that into the price. A bay that is down is not just a repair bill — it is the tickets you cannot run. That is the piece of choosing the right car lift for your shop that never shows up in a brochure comparison, and it is the piece that shop owners call us about most often in year six.

Budget in Total Cost, Not Sticker Price

The number on the quote is one line in a longer list. Freight to Iowa, offloading, installation labor, electrical work, concrete remediation if the core test comes back thin, and the annual inspection that keeps you compliant and insurable all belong in the same column. We give ranges rather than fixed numbers because freight and electrical vary too much by building, but a good rule is to plan for installation and site prep to add a meaningful percentage on top of the equipment itself.

Where we tell people not to economize is capacity, brand support, and installation. Where you can reasonably economize is features you will not use — bells and whistles that look good in a catalog and never get touched. A well-installed 12,000 lb two-post from a brand with parts on the shelf will outperform a loaded 10,000 lb unit from a brand nobody services, every time.
