We ask customers to physically walk their site with a tape measure and mark where the columns or posts would land, then double-check overhead clearance against the lift’s fully-raised height plus the vehicle on top of it. Power and Electrical Needs for a Detached Shop
A detached building usually means running its own electrical service, and that changes what lift options make sense. Two-post and four-post lifts typically need a dedicated 220V circuit, and if your detached shop is fed by a smaller subpanel than the main house, that circuit needs to be part of the electrical plan from day one, not an afterthought squeezed in after drywall. We’ve seen shops where the electrician ran plenty of outlets for tools but nothing sized for a hydraulic lift motor, which means an expensive rewire down the road.
Talk to your electrician about amperage draw for the specific lift you’re considering, not a generic number, since capacity and lift type both affect it. If you’re leaning toward a mobile column lift instead of a fixed two-post, power needs shift again, and battery-powered columns can actually simplify a detached shop’s electrical plan considerably since you’re not running conduit to a fixed location at all. That flexibility is worth discussing early, especially in shops without full-time power run out to them yet.
Matching Lift Type to How You’ll Actually Use the Shop
Detached shops get used differently than attached garages. Some become dedicated project spaces for one specific vehicle, others turn into small side businesses doing oil changes and brake jobs for friends and neighbors, and some are simply overflow storage with an occasional lift-up need. The right lift for a single-vehicle hobby space is often a two-post or a home-storage lift, while a shop that will see regular traffic and multiple vehicles a week does better with a heavier-duty two-post or a four-post that doubles as storage between jobs.
We always ask what the shop is for in five years, not just this year, because detached shop lift planning done right accounts for growth. A weekend project shop today can become a small side business tomorrow, and a lift sized for light hobby use won’t hold up under commercial-style demand. If there’s any chance you’ll outgrow the first plan, size up on capacity now rather than replacing the lift in three years.

Detached buildings are often built to a budget, and overhead door height is one of the first things that gets trimmed to save money. We’ve measured detached shops with 8-foot doors and 10-foot ceilings where the customer wanted a four-post lift, and the math simply didn’t work once you accounted for the vehicle height on top of the platform. If a lift is anywhere in your plans, spec the door and ceiling height around the lift’s raised clearance requirement, not the other way around.
Drive-in access matters just as much as vertical clearance. A detached shop on a tight lot with a sharp turn into the door can make it nearly impossible to line a vehicle up straight on a two-post lift’s arms, which slows down every single use. Walk the actual approach with a vehicle before you finalize the building’s orientation on the lot if you can.
Concrete Anchoring and Slab Requirements
We touched on slab thickness above, but anchoring itself deserves its own line item in detached shop lift planning. Anchors need to bite into concrete that has fully cured, typically a minimum of 28 days, and rebar or mesh reinforcement should be positioned so it doesn’t interfere with anchor placement. If your slab has in-floor heat lines or plumbing running through the lift footprint, that needs to be mapped and avoided during the pour, not discovered when the drill hits a pipe.
