A lot of farm shops in Iowa get talked into a single two-post lift because that’s what the last salesman had on the lot, and then six months later they’re wrestling a loaded grain truck onto a lift that was never built for that kind of weight or wheelbase. Why One Lift Rarely Covers a Real Farm Operation

Most farm shops we work with handle at least three different vehicle categories in a given month: pickups and personal trucks, tractors and combines, and skid steers or smaller implements. Each of those has a different weight range, wheelbase, and lifting point layout. A single lift sized for a half-ton pickup will fight you every time a loaded feed truck or a tandem-axle grain truck needs brake work. That’s the core reason farm shop lift configurations almost always involve more than one piece of equipment rather than one do-everything unit.

We also see the opposite mistake — shops that buy the biggest heavy-duty lift they can afford and then use it exclusively for oil changes on a half-ton truck, wasting capacity and floor space that could’ve gone to a second, more useful lift. The right approach starts with an honest inventory of what actually needs lifting, how often, and how high. That inventory drives everything else in the layout.

Two-Post Lifts for Trucks and Daily Driver Work

For the pickup trucks, personal vehicles, and lighter service trucks that come through a farm shop, a two-post lift is still the workhorse. It clears the undercarriage completely, which matters for brake jobs, exhaust work, and u-joint replacement on farm trucks that see a lot of gravel road miles. We typically spec a 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity two-post for this role in a farm setting, since farm trucks tend to run heavier than the average suburban pickup once you account for toolboxes, hitches, and loaded beds.

Symmetric arm configurations work well here because most farm trucks and service vehicles have fairly conventional weight distribution. If your farm shop also handles the occasional flatbed or larger service truck, we’ll usually recommend stepping the capacity up rather than trying to stretch a lighter lift beyond its rated range. Four-Post and Drive-On Options for Equipment and Storage

Tractors, combines, and larger implements don’t have the lifting points a two-post arm setup needs, which is where a four-post or drive-on platform lift earns its keep. These let equipment drive straight on under its own power, no spotting arms under a frame rail, and they double as elevated storage when they’re not in use for service work. For shops with limited square footage, that dual-purpose function alone often justifies the investment.

We size four-post platforms for farm use based on the widest axle track and heaviest single piece of equipment expected to cross it, not the average. A combine head or loaded utility tractor can weigh far more than most shop owners initially estimate, and running a piece of equipment that’s near or over rated capacity is not a corner worth cutting. Mobile Column Lifts for Heavy or Oversized Equipment

When a shop regularly deals with combines, grain carts, or semi tractors, mobile column lifts start to make a lot of sense. Sold in sets of four, six, or eight columns, they lift at the wheels or axle points and can be positioned to match almost any wheelbase, which matters when your equipment lineup changes from a compact tractor to a full-size combine in the same afternoon. They also store against a wall when not in use, which matters in shops where floor space competes with parts shelving and workbenches.

The tradeoff is setup time and a learning curve on synchronized operation, but for shops running mixed heavy equipment, mobile columns are often more practical than trying to build a fixed-post system rated for the largest possible load. We’ve spec’d column sets for cooperatives and larger farm operations where the equipment roster simply outgrows what a stationary two-post or four-post can handle. Ceiling Height, Floor Thickness, and Power Requirements

Before any lift goes in a farm shop, we check three things that get overlooked constantly: ceiling clearance, concrete thickness, and available power. A four-post platform lift with a raised vehicle plus a driver’s head clearance can need more overhead room than an older machine shed actually has. Concrete poured for equipment storage isn’t always rated for a lift’s anchor load — we’ve had to recommend pour-in reinforcement more than once on farm properties with older slabs.

Power is the other surprise. Two-post and four-post lifts typically run on standard shop electrical service, but larger mobile column sets and multiple simultaneous installations can require dedicated circuits or a service upgrade. We do a site walk before quoting for exactly this reason — a farm shop 40 minutes from the nearest electrician isn’t the place to guess wrong on amperage.

Planning for Growth Without Overbuilding Now

A lot of farm operations expand equipment lineups faster than they expand shop buildings, so we always ask what the operation might look like in five years, not just this season. Leaving clearance for a second lift, running conduit during initial construction even if the second unit comes later, and choosing capacities with some headroom above current needs all pay off.
