Farm shops are their own animal. A commercial repair bay knows exactly what rolls in the door every day, but a farm shop might see a dually service truck Monday, a grain cart wheel hub Wednesday, and the kid’s project car all winter long. That mix changes every decision — capacity, arm reach, ceiling clearance, power supply, even where you set the columns relative to the overhead door. Start With the Heaviest Thing You’ll Actually Lift
Nearly every bad lift purchase we get called out to fix started with someone sizing for their average vehicle instead of their heaviest one. A half-ton pickup is nothing. A crew-cab one-ton with a service body, a welder, a full fuel transfer tank, and a toolbox of hand tools can push past 9,000 lb before you add a bale spear on the front. If you own that truck, a 9,000 lb lift is not the answer — you want 10,000 or 12,000 lb so you’re operating with real margin instead of living at the top of the rating.
We generally steer Iowa farm shops toward a 12,000 lb two-post as the sweet spot. It handles every pickup and service truck you own, it swallows a cargo van, and it still lifts a car without drama when you set the arms right. If you’re regularly under skid loaders, tandem-axle trucks, or anything with a long wheelbase, that’s a different conversation — usually mobile columns or a heavy-duty four-post. Ceiling Height Is the Constraint Nobody Measures First
Ceiling height kills more farm shop lift plans than budget does. A standard clearfloor two-post needs roughly 12 feet to the underside of any obstruction, and that means the lowest thing in the bay — not the peak of the truss. Sprinkler heads, purlins, hanging lights, radiant tube heaters, and the track for the overhead door all count. We’ve had guys tell us they had 14 feet, and when we got there the door track ate 22 inches right where the columns needed to stand.
If you’re tight on height, you have real options. Baseplate two-post models run the hydraulic line and equalization cables across the floor instead of overhead, which drops the required clearance by a couple of feet. Four-post lifts don’t need overhead structure at all and give you drive-on convenience for storage or long-term projects. Mid-rise scissor lifts get a vehicle to comfortable working height with almost no ceiling demand, though you give up full stand-under access. In a new build, tell your builder you want 14 feet clear before the trusses get ordered — that one sentence during planning is worth more than any retrofit we can do later. Measure the low spot, write it down, and bring that number to us.
Concrete: The Part You Can’t See and Can’t Skip
Anchors only work if the concrete behind them works. Most two-post lifts up to 12,000 lb call for at least 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier units want 6 inches or more. Plenty of older Iowa farm shops were poured thin, poured over questionable base, or poured in sections with control joints exactly where you’d like to set a column. Anchoring into a crack or an edge is how a lift ends up leaning.
We test before we drill. A rotary hammer and a core sample tell the truth fast, and if the slab won’t support the anchors, the fix is a cut-out and a proper footing pad — usually a few feet square, tied and poured to spec. That work is disruptive for a day and then it’s done forever. Skipping it is not a savings, it’s deferred risk with your body underneath. We also look at slope. Farm shops frequently have floors pitched toward a drain or an overhead door, and while a little slope is manageable with shimming, a serious grade needs to be corrected. Any honest farm shop lift guide has to say this plainly: the slab is a structural component of the lift, not just something to bolt to.
Power, Air, and Where the Cord Actually Reaches
Most two-post lifts we install run 208-230V single-phase, drawing modest amperage on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. That’s usually available in a farm shop, but “usually” isn’t “already run to the right corner.” We need a disconnect within reach of the power unit column, and we need it on a dedicated circuit — not shared with the welder, the air compressor, or the shop heater. Voltage sag on startup makes a motor run hot and shortens its life considerably.
Air matters too. Almost every modern two-post uses an air-actuated lock release, so you need a shop air line reaching the power unit side. Nothing exotic, just a quarter-inch line with reasonable pressure. If your compressor lives in the machine shed 60 feet away, plan the run before install day. Three-phase power exists in some larger operations and it’s fine — tell us up front so we order the right motor. And while we’re at it, think about lighting. Working under a truck at chest height with one bulb 14 feet up is miserable. LED strips on the ceiling above each bay, or a couple of wall-mounted floods aimed under the vehicle, make every job faster and safer.
Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mobile Columns
Two-post lifts win for wheels-free service — brakes, tires, suspension, exhaust, anything where the wheels need to hang. That covers the majority of farm shop work. The tradeoff is that you have to set the arms correctly under real lift points on every vehicle, and mixed fleets mean you’re adapting adapters constantly.
Four-post lifts shine when you want drive-on simplicity or storage. Park the classic on top and the daily driver underneath. Roll a truck up, pull the pan, do an oil change with zero arm placement. They handle long wheelbases better than most two-posts and they don’t need overhead structure. For undercar work requiring wheels off, you add rolling bridge jacks. Mobile column lifts are the answer for equipment that will never fit a fixed lift — grain trucks, service bodies, big RVs. Four columns roll wherever you need them, wired together, lifting at each wheel. They cost more and demand good flat concrete, but for an operation running heavy trucks they’re the only realistic path. Layout: Plan the Bay, Not Just the Lift
Where the lift goes shapes how the whole shop works for the next twenty years. We ask for three feet minimum on each side of the vehicle, and more is better — you want to walk a transmission jack around without turning sideways. In front, leave room for the hood to open fully and for a toolbox or bench. Behind, leave enough to open a tailgate and back a trailer out without a ten-point turn.
Column orientation matters more than folks expect. Put the power unit column on the side where your air and electric already live, and on the side where you naturally walk in. Think about whether you want the vehicle nose-in or nose-out for the work you do most. Also consider what else lives in that bay — a welding table, a parts washer, the tire machine. A lift in the middle of a two-bay shop can block the second bay’s access if you put it in the wrong spot. We walk this with customers before install, tape on the floor, truck parked where it’ll live. Buying, Installing, and Keeping It Running for Decades

Installation is worth paying for. We torque anchors to spec, verify column plumb, set cable equalization, bleed the hydraulics, cycle the locks, and load-test before we leave.
