A farm shop lift install brings its own set of headaches that a typical commercial garage never has to think about — pole barn posts in odd spots, a slab that was poured for a combine tire chock rather than a two post lift, and single-phase power that wasn’t sized for a hydraulic unit. Why Farm Shops Need a Different Install Plan

Most farm shops weren’t built with a lift in mind. They were built to park equipment, weld a broken hitch, and store parts through the winter. That means the slab is often thinner in the middle of the bay than along the perimeter, the ceiling trusses are lower than a typical commercial shop, and the electrical panel is sized for lighting and a welder — not a two post lift’s motor. Before we schedule any farm shop lift install, we ask about slab thickness, truss height, and what’s already running off the panel.

We also ask what actually gets worked on. A shop that lifts half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups for oil changes and brake work has very different needs than one that occasionally needs to get a grain truck’s dual rear axle off the ground. Getting this right at the front end is the difference between a farm shop lift install that serves the operation for fifteen years and one that gets outgrown in three.

Slab and Anchoring on Ag Property

This is where more farm shop lift install projects run into trouble than anywhere else. A lot of pole barn slabs are 4 inches of unreinforced concrete poured over gravel — fine for parking a pickup, not fine for anchoring a two post lift that needs a rated slab, typically 4.5 inches or more of properly cured concrete with adequate rebar or mesh, under each column. We test the slab with a core sample or at minimum a visual and tap inspection before we finalize the plan.

If the existing pad won’t hold anchors to spec, we don’t fudge it. We’ll either recommend a footer pour under each column location or point you toward a four post or mobile column lift that spreads load differently and, in the mobile column’s case, needs no anchoring at all. We’ve seen too many farm shop lift install jobs elsewhere where a lift was anchored into a thin slab and started working loose within a season — cracked concrete, a lift that rocks under load, and a redo that costs more than doing it right the first time.

Clearance: Trusses, Loft Storage, and Door Height

Farm shops frequently have a hay loft, a parts mezzanine, or low roof trusses that a standard commercial building doesn’t. We measure ceiling height at the actual lift location, not just at the tallest point of the building, because a lot of pole barns have trusses that dip lower toward the middle of the bay. A two post lift raising a pickup to full height needs real clearance above it, and we’ve had to swap a planned two post for a lower-profile mid-rise or a scissor lift more than once after measuring a farm shop that looked taller than it actually was.

Door height matters just as much on a farm shop lift install, since a lot of ag buildings have a single tall door sized for a combine header trailer but a service bay tucked to the side with a shorter door. We map the actual path the vehicle takes into the bay, not just the biggest opening in the building.

Power: Single-Phase Reality on Most Farms

Nearly every farm shop we work in runs single-phase power, and that’s fine — most two post and four post lifts come standard with a single-phase motor, so this usually isn’t a dealbreaker. The real question is whether the existing circuit can handle the draw alongside a welder, an air compressor, and shop lighting all on the same panel. We spec the breaker and wire gauge for each farm shop lift install based on the specific lift’s motor rating, and if the panel’s tapped out, we’d rather flag it before install day than have a breaker trip the first time someone runs the lift and a compressor together.

Choosing the Right Lift for Farm Use

A lot of farm shop lift install decisions come down to matching the lift to what actually rolls through the door. For pickups, half-ton to one-ton, a standard two post lift in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range covers nearly everything. Install Day: What Actually Happens

On install day for a farm shop lift install, our crew arrives with the lift, anchoring hardware, and everything needed to run new circuit if that was part of the plan. We confirm final placement against the truss and door measurements taken during planning, set the columns, and run the anchors to spec for the slab we already verified.
