Start With Your Heaviest Vehicle, Not Your Most Common One

The single most common mistake we see in fleet shop equipment planning is spec’ing to the average vehicle in the fleet. A city public works department counts up twenty pickups and two tandem-axle plow trucks, decides the pickups dominate, and buys a 12,000 lb two-post. Then February arrives, the plow truck needs a hydraulic line, and it goes to an outside vendor at outside-vendor rates and outside-vendor turnaround. That single decision quietly costs more over five years than the capacity upgrade would have cost up front.

Spec to the heaviest unit you legitimately expect to service in-house, then confirm the number with a scale ticket rather than a brochure. Gross vehicle weight ratings don’t tell you what’s actually sitting on the axles once you’ve added a service body, a crane, a salt spreader, or a full fuel tank. We’ve weighed “one-ton” trucks in central Iowa that came in well past 13,000 lb loaded. For mixed fleets that run everything from a compact sedan to a Class 6 chassis, a set of four mobile columns usually beats trying to find one fixed lift that spans the whole range — you get the capacity, and you get the flexibility to move the lift to the vehicle instead of the other way around. Capacity headroom is cheap when you’re buying. It’s expensive when you’re not.

Bay Layout, Ceiling Height, and the Concrete Underneath

Before anyone quotes you a lift, someone needs to measure the building. Ceiling height determines whether a clearfloor two-post is even legal to install; overhead models need more, and the door track, unit heaters, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all eat into the number you thought you had. We’ve walked into fleet garages where the usable height under a sprinkler main was nearly two feet less than the height at the peak, and that changes the whole recommendation.

Concrete matters just as much. Most two-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength, and a lot of older municipal shops in Iowa were poured for parking, not for a lift transmitting load through four anchor bolts. Core sampling is cheap insurance. If the slab is thin, cutting and pouring pads is a normal part of the job — we do it regularly — but it needs to be in the budget from day one rather than discovered on install day. Also think about traffic flow: a fleet bay that gets used forty times a week needs a drive-through path, room for a rolling jack or transmission jack beside the vehicle, and enough clearance for a technician to open a driver’s door without hitting a column. Drawing it on paper first has saved more than one department a very awkward conversation with a facilities committee.

Where Mobile Columns Earn Their Keep

For mixed and heavy fleets, mobile columns are the most flexible fleet shop equipment purchase available. A set of four wireless columns lifts a bus, a box truck, a dump truck, or a service van by the wheels, which means suspension and axle work happens with the wheels hanging free and nothing blocking the frame rails. Add a second set and you can lift six or eight wheel positions on an articulated unit or a long trailer.

The practical advantages show up in daily workflow. Columns roll out of the way when the bay needs to be a fabrication area or a wash bay. They don’t require anchoring into a slab that may not support it. The trade-offs are real too: columns need charged batteries or a reliable power drop, they need level floor, and they take longer to set up than driving onto a four-post. Budgeting for Total Cost, Not Sticker Price

Fleet purchasing is usually built around a capital number, which pushes buyers toward the lowest bid. We understand the constraint, but the lowest bid on fleet shop equipment frequently becomes the highest lifetime cost. Cables, cylinders, lock assemblies, hoses, and power units all wear. What decides your real cost is whether those parts are available in days or weeks, and whether they cost a reasonable amount when they arrive.

Off-brand imports sold by companies that vanish leave you sourcing a cable of unknown length from an unknown source while a truck sits on jack stands. Factor in annual inspection, planned cable replacement, and the labor to do it, and the gap narrows fast — often it reverses. Beyond Lifts: The Support Equipment That Actually Gets Used

A lift is the anchor, but it isn’t the whole bay. The fleet shops that run smoothly have thought through the surrounding equipment with the same discipline. Rolling bridge jacks turn a four-post into a wheels-free service platform. A tire changer and balancer sized for the largest wheel in the fleet pays for itself quickly when you’re mounting your own light-truck tires instead of paying a vendor per wheel. Air distribution with enough CFM at the far end of the shop keeps impact guns working like they should.

Fluid handling deserves specific attention in a fleet setting. Bulk oil with metered reels, a proper waste oil evacuation setup, and a coolant management system reduce both spill risk and the time technicians spend hauling jugs. Exhaust extraction matters if you idle diesels indoors, which in an Iowa winter you will. And don’t skip the boring items — good task lighting over the lift, a decent creeper, wheel chocks that don’t walk, and enough shop stands to hold a truck safely. Electrification Is Changing the Spec Sheet

Iowa fleets are beginning to add electric and hybrid units, and that shifts several equipment decisions. Battery packs sit low and heavy, so lift point locations change, weight distribution changes, and some frame-engaging setups that worked fine on a gas van don’t work on its electric counterpart. Mobile columns and four-post lifts handle this gracefully because they lift by the wheels; two-post frame contact requires more care and manufacturer guidance.

The other change is everything around the lift. High-voltage service requires insulated tools, class-rated gloves, an isolation and lockout procedure, and physical space to store a pack safely if it ever comes out. Battery lift tables and appropriate spill or thermal containment aren’t standard in most Iowa fleet garages yet, but the departments planning three to five years ahead are leaving floor space and electrical capacity for them now, which is far cheaper than retrofitting a finished building. Leave conduit runs, leave panel capacity, and choose lift styles that don’t care what powers the vehicle.

The last piece of good fleet shop equipment planning is the part that never shows up on a quote comparison: who installs it, who inspects it, and who answers the phone when it stops working. Annual inspection is not optional for a working fleet garage. Industry standards call for it, insurers increasingly ask about it, and it’s the single cheapest way to catch a frayed cable or a weeping cylinder before it becomes a dropped vehicle.
