The honest answer is that most shops don’t need to rebuild from scratch, but there are a handful of real gaps between a gas-and-diesel bay and one that can safely handle battery-electric vehicles. We install lifts and stock parts for shops across Iowa, and we’ve watched the EV service question go from a curiosity to a real business decision in the last couple of years. Here’s what we tell customers when they ask us to help them plan the upgrade.

Why EV Shop Equipment Starts With the Lift, Not the Charger

Most shops assume the first purchase should be a charging station or a battery diagnostic scanner. In our experience, the first real gap is almost always the lift. Battery-electric vehicles are heavy — often 1,000 to 2,000 pounds heavier than a comparable gas vehicle because of the battery pack slung under the floor — and that pack changes where the vehicle needs to be lifted. Pad placement on a two-post lift that’s worked fine for a decade of sedans and pickups may not clear the battery enclosure on an EV, and guessing wrong risks real damage.

This is the piece of ev shop equipment planning we spend the most time on with customers, because it’s also the one most often overlooked. A lift rated well above the EV’s curb weight, with adjustable pads and enough width to clear a wide battery pack, solves most of the problem. Some shops add a second lift specifically set up for EV work rather than retrofitting their only bay. Either way, before anything else gets bought, we walk through the actual vehicles a shop expects to see and match lift capacity and pad geometry to those models specifically, not to a generic EV spec sheet.

Battery Service Tools You Can’t Skip

Once the lift question is settled, the next layer of ev shop equipment is about safety around high-voltage systems. EV battery packs run at several hundred volts, and technicians working near them need insulated tools, rated gloves that get tested on a schedule, and a way to verify a system is actually de-energized before hands go near it. A basic high-voltage safety kit — insulated wrenches, voltage-rated gloves, a category-rated multimeter — is inexpensive relative to everything else on this list, but it’s the one piece that actually protects your technicians.

Beyond safety gear, most independent shops don’t need a full battery pack teardown setup unless they’re planning to specialize in EV battery repair, which is still a small niche even as EV volume grows. What’s more practical for a general shop is a scan tool with EV-specific coverage for the brands you’re likely to see, plus a lift table or transmission jack rated and shaped to support a battery pack safely if you ever do need to drop one for a recall or a service campaign. We steer most shops toward this middle tier — enough capability to do routine service and diagnostics safely, without buying into a full pack rebuild line nobody will use.

Charging Infrastructure for the Shop Itself

A surprising number of shops assume they need a fast-charging station installed before they can service EVs at all. In reality, most diagnostic and repair work doesn’t require charging the vehicle — it requires safely working around a battery that’s already there. Where charging matters is customer experience and workflow: if a customer drops off an EV for a day of work, a Level 2 charger in the lot means the car leaves with a full battery instead of the same charge it arrived with. That’s a customer-service upgrade more than a repair necessity.

For shops that do want charging on site, a single Level 2 station is usually enough to start, and it doesn’t require the electrical infrastructure a DC fast charger does. We tell customers to treat this as one of the last items on the ev shop equipment list, not the first, because it adds real electrical contractor cost without touching the actual repair capability of the shop. Get the lift and the safety gear right first; add charging once you know how many EVs are actually coming through the door each month.

Training Matters as Much as Tools

You can buy every piece of ev shop equipment on this list and still have an unsafe bay if nobody on staff has been trained on high-voltage procedures. EV-specific certification programs exist through several manufacturers and independent training organizations, and they typically cover de-energization procedures, PPE requirements, and the specific hazards of working near a live battery pack. This isn’t optional the way it might feel for a shop that’s been doing brake jobs the same way for twenty years.

We’ve seen shops buy the insulated tools and rated gloves and then never actually train a technician on when and how to use them, which defeats the purpose. Even a single trained technician who can supervise EV jobs and set up the vehicle safely for others is a meaningful improvement over having no one certified at all. Factor training time and cost into your equipment budget from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought once the tools arrive.

New vs. Used Equipment for EV Work

Given the added expense of high-voltage safety gear and specialized diagnostic tools, some shops look at used shop equipment to offset costs on the lift side. That’s often a reasonable move — a well-maintained used lift with the right capacity and pad configuration works exactly as well as a new one for EV service, as long as it’s been inspected and certified. Where we’d caution against buying used is on anything safety-critical to high-voltage work itself, like insulated tools or voltage-rated gloves, since those need documented testing history you can trust.

The lift is usually the biggest single line item in an ev shop equipment upgrade, so it’s the place where used equipment saves the most money without compromising safety, provided it’s sourced and inspected properly. We help shops evaluate used lifts specifically for EV suitability — checking pad clearance, capacity margin, and overall condition — rather than just assuming any working two-post lift will do the job.

Budgeting the Full Cost of Going EV-Ready

It’s easy to price out one lift or one scan tool and think the job is done, but a realistic ev shop equipment budget includes the lift, safety gear, technician training, possible facility upgrades for charging, and ongoing costs like glove testing and software updates for EV-specific diagnostic coverage.
