Question 1: Do You Need Full Wheel Access, or Just Storage and Alignment?
This is the first branch of any real four post vs two post decision tree, and it settles more arguments than any other question. If your daily work involves brake jobs, suspension repair, tire changes, or anything where the wheels need to hang free in the air, a two post lift wins almost every time. But if you’re mostly parking cars, storing a project vehicle, doing oil changes, or running wheel alignments, a four post lift starts to make more sense. If you’re working in a garage with a lower ceiling, or you’ve got HVAC ductwork and lighting hanging down, get exact numbers before you fall in love with a specific model. Some four post models, especially storage-focused units, are actually built with lower overall rise for exactly this reason. Question 4: Are You Running a Multi-Bay Commercial Shop or a Single Home Garage?

Question 5: What’s Your Budget Across the Full Install, Not Just the Lift?
Two post lifts are often less expensive up front for comparable capacity, but the anchoring, potential concrete work, and professional installation requirements can close that gap fast, especially if your slab needs remediation first. Four post lifts skip most of the anchoring complexity, but the extra steel and runways mean the base unit itself often costs more before installation is even factored in.

Question 6: Do You Need Alignment Capability?
If wheel alignments are part of your service menu now or planned for later, this narrows things fast. Most standard two post lifts aren’t built for alignment work because the wheels hang free with no slip plates or runway reference surface. You’d need a dedicated alignment-ready lift, which is usually a four post configuration with turnplates and slip plates built in.
If alignments aren’t part of your plan, this question doesn’t move the needle much, and you’re free to decide based on the other branches above. But if it is on your service menu, it should override almost every other factor in the decision tree, because retrofitting alignment capability onto the wrong lift later is expensive and sometimes impossible.
