Start With Ceiling Height, Not the Lift You Want

Every garage lift planning checklist we’ve ever built starts with a tape measure pointed at the ceiling, not a wish list of features. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest point overhead — that means garage door tracks, light fixtures, HVAC ductwork, and any bracing, not just the drywall or rafters. A two-post lift with a raised vehicle usually needs more overhead room than most people assume, and a four-post storage lift stacks even more height on top once a vehicle is fully raised.

Most home lifts need a slab that’s at least 4 inches thick, poured with reasonable rebar or mesh reinforcement, and free of major cracks near the anchor points. Older Iowa homes, detached garages, and additions poured decades apart from the main slab are the places we see problems most — thin edges, control joints running right through where anchors need to go, or a slab that was never meant to carry concentrated point loads.

Map Your Footprint and Door Swing

A lift needs more than just floor space under the posts — it needs clearance for the vehicle to pull in straight, room for doors to open fully once the vehicle is raised, and enough side clearance that you’re not squeezing past support columns every time you walk around it. Sketch your garage to scale — even a rough drawing on graph paper works — and mark where the overhead door track, water heater, workbenches, and any support posts sit. Decide What You’re Actually Using the Lift For

If you mainly want to park a second vehicle up and reclaim floor space, a four-post storage lift is usually the simpler, lower-maintenance answer. Be honest with yourself about which one you’re really going to use. Factor In Weight Capacity and Vehicle Growth

Confirm Delivery Access and Assembly Space

The last item that belongs on your garage lift planning checklist is the least glamorous: how does the lift actually get into your garage? Lift components are heavy and awkward, arriving on pallets that need a loading dock, liftgate truck, or forklift access, plus a clear path from the driveway to the install location. Narrow gates, tight turns, or a garage packed with storage can turn delivery day into a logistics problem nobody planned for.

Walk your route the way the equipment will actually travel — driveway width, doorway clearance, any steps or thresholds — before delivery is scheduled.
