Knowing how to inspect a car lift is the difference between catching a worn cable on a Tuesday afternoon and explaining to a shop owner why a vehicle came down off the arms. We’ve spent years installing and servicing lifts across Iowa, from single-bay home garages in Ames to five-bay dealership service centers, and the lifts that fail are almost never the ones that get looked at regularly. They’re the ones nobody walked around in eighteen months. This guide covers the actual inspection routine our technicians run, in the order we run it, so you can do a real check yourself before your next annual service call.

Start With the Anchor Bolts and the Slab

Every proper car lift inspection starts at the floor, not the arms. Anchor bolts are what keep a two-post lift from walking or tipping under load, and they take a beating from vibration, impact wrenches, and thermal cycling in an unheated bay. We check torque on every anchor bolt against the manufacturer’s spec, looking specifically for bolts that spin freely, heads that have backed off the slab, or hairline cracks radiating out from the bolt pattern in the concrete itself.

Concrete condition matters as much as the bolts. If you see spalling, a cracked slab, or a base plate that’s visibly rocking even slightly when the lift cycles, stop using it until an installer evaluates the pad. We’ve re-anchored lifts in shops where the original slab was poured thin or the bolts were set too close to a control joint, and in both cases the fix was straightforward once someone actually looked. This is the step most operators skip because it’s boring, but it’s also the one most likely to prevent a catastrophic failure.

Check Cables, Chains, and Pulleys for Wear

On two-post and four-post lifts with cable or chain equalization systems, wear here shows up gradually and then fails suddenly. We run our hands along every cable looking for broken strands, kinks, or flat spots, and we check chains for stretch, rust pitting, and links that don’t sit flush in the sprocket. Pulleys should spin freely without wobble, and the cable should track dead center in the pulley groove, not riding up on one edge.

Uneven arm height is usually the first symptom of a cable or chain problem before it becomes a visible defect. If one side of your lift settles lower than the other over a few cycles, that’s your equalization system telling you something’s stretched or slipping. We carry OEM-spec replacement cables for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas lifts, and swapping a cable during a scheduled inspection takes a fraction of the time and cost of an emergency repair after a failure mid-lift. This is one of the fastest wear items to check and one of the most commonly ignored.

Inspect the Hydraulic System

Hydraulic lifts need their own dedicated look during any car lift inspection. Check the cylinder for external leaks, weeping seals, or scoring on the ram itself, and inspect every hose and fitting for cracking, bulging, or dampness that suggests a slow leak. Fluid level in the power unit reservoir should sit within spec, and the fluid itself should be clean, not milky or dark, which can indicate water intrusion or internal wear.

Listen to the power unit while it runs. A healthy pump has a consistent hum; grinding, whining, or a labored sound under load usually points to a failing pump motor or a valve that’s not seating correctly. We also check the velocity fuse or restrictor valve, which is the safety component that stops a sudden drop if a hose fails catastrophically. It’s easy to forget this part exists until the day it matters, and confirming it’s still functional is a five-minute check worth doing every time.

Test the Locking Mechanism Every Time

The mechanical locks on a two-post lift are arguably the single most important safety component on the entire machine, because they’re what actually holds the vehicle up once you’re underneath it, not the hydraulics. Raise the lift, engage the locks, and then lower the arms onto the locks fully before you trust it with your body under a vehicle. Locks should engage cleanly with an audible click at each interval, and they should hold weight without any perceptible drop when you release lift pressure.

If a lock fails to catch consistently, skips an interval, or feels like it’s dragging, that’s a lift that needs service before its next use, full stop. We see worn latch mechanisms most often on older lifts that have seen heavy daily use for a decade or more, and replacement latch assemblies are inexpensive relative to the risk of skipping this step. This is also where we tell customers to physically shake the lift once it’s locked and loaded, gently, to confirm there’s no unexpected give anywhere in the mechanism.

Look at Arms, Pads, and Adjusters

Lift arms and their locking pins take enormous stress every time a vehicle sits on the equipment, and worn arm pins or restriction pins can let an arm swing out from under a car unexpectedly. Check that arm pins are secure, that restriction pins engage fully, and that there’s no excessive play when you try to move a locked arm side to side. Rubber pads and adapters should be free of cracking, compression, or chunks torn out from years of contact with vehicle pinch points.

Worn pads seem like a minor cosmetic issue, but a compressed or cracked pad changes the actual contact point and angle where the vehicle sits, which can lead to slippage during a lift cycle. We replace pad sets regularly during scheduled service visits because they’re a low-cost item that directly affects how securely a vehicle sits once it’s in the air, and it’s one of the simplest things to check visually without any tools at all.

Check the Safety Decals and Rated Capacity

Every lift leaves the factory with a capacity plate and a set of safety decals, and both need to be legible during any thorough car lift inspection. If decals have faded, peeled off, or gone missing entirely, order replacements, because they’re not decoration; they carry load limits, lift point instructions, and warnings that protect both the technician and the shop from liability. While you’re there, confirm the actual rated capacity matches what your shop is using the lift for day to day. We’ve walked into bays where a lift rated for a lighter capacity was routinely loaded with three-quarter-ton trucks or work vans, which is a mismatch that stresses every component faster than the manufacturer accounted for. Document Everything and Set a Schedule

A car lift inspection that isn’t written down doesn’t help you defend against a claim or track a developing problem over time. We recommend a simple log kept near each lift noting the date, inspection points checked, and anything replaced or flagged for follow-up. This is the same documentation OSHA and insurance auditors ask to see, and it’s also genuinely useful for spotting a slow-developing issue, like a pad wearing faster than expected, before it becomes urgent.

How often you inspect depends on usage, but a daily visual check by whoever’s operating the lift, paired with a documented monthly or quarterly deeper inspection, catches nearly everything before it becomes dangerous.
