Start With the Fluid Reservoir

Low hydraulic fluid is the single most common reason a lift won’t raise, and it’s the easiest thing to overlook because the pump still runs — it just can’t build pressure with air where oil should be. If the level is below the pickup tube, top it off with the fluid type specified on the lift’s data tag (most Rotary and Challenger units call for a specific ISO-grade hydraulic oil, not just any shop oil).

While you’re in there, check the color and smell of the fluid. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid usually means the pump has been working overtime, possibly fighting a restriction elsewhere in the system, and a fluid change alone might not fix why your hydraulic lift won’t raise. If the reservoir was bone dry, also inspect the cylinder and hose fittings for a leak before refilling — adding fluid to a system that’s actively leaking just delays the same call. Bleed Air From the System

Air in the hydraulic lines is the second most common cause, especially right after a fluid change, a hose replacement, or if the lift sat unused for a long stretch. Air compresses where fluid doesn’t, so instead of lifting a vehicle, the pump just squeezes an air pocket and the lift barely moves or shudders on the way up. Most two-post and four-post lifts have a bleed procedure specific to the brand — check your owner’s manual, since Rotary and BendPak sequences differ slightly.

Generally, this involves running the lift up and down several times with no vehicle on it, sometimes with a bleed screw cracked at the cylinder to let trapped air escape. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, this is a good point to call a technician rather than keep cycling the lift — repeatedly running a lift with air in the system can accelerate wear on seals and the pump itself. Check the Lowering or Release Valve

Cleaning the valve seat can sometimes restore function temporarily, but a worn or scored valve typically needs replacement. Inspect Electrical Connections and the Motor

If the pump motor doesn’t even hum when you hit the button, the problem may not be hydraulic at all. Check the power source first — a tripped breaker, a loose plug, or a worn foot switch can all stop a lift cold before fluid ever enters the equation. On 220V units especially, we’ve found more than one lift down simply because of a blown fuse or a connection that vibrated loose over time.

If the motor hums but doesn’t spin, or spins without building pressure, the pump coupling or the pump itself may have failed internally. A seized pump motor will often trip a breaker repeatedly rather than just failing quietly, which is a useful clue when you’re trying to narrow things down over the phone. Always shut off power at the breaker before opening any electrical housing, and if you’re not confident working around 220V wiring, this is a reasonable place to bring in a technician rather than push through it alone.

Look for Cylinder or Seal Failure

If the pump builds pressure and the valve checks out fine but the lift still creeps down under load or won’t hold height, internal cylinder seals are the likely culprit. Worn seals let fluid bypass internally, so the lift may rise partway under no load but sink the moment a vehicle’s weight is applied. This is a wear item on older lifts, particularly ones that have sat outdoors or seen inconsistent maintenance over the years.

Cylinder rebuilds or replacements aren’t a DIY-friendly fix for most shops, since they involve removing the cylinder and working with precise tolerances. Pumps wear internally over years of use, and a worn gear or vane pump can spin fine while producing weak or no flow.
