If you’ve never had a lift put in before, the lift install process can feel like a black box — you sign off on a quote, and then what? We’ve run this process for shops, dealerships, and home garages all over Iowa, and we’ve found that most of the anxiety around it comes from not knowing what to expect. So we’re laying out exactly how our lift install process works from the first phone call to the final walkthrough, so you know what you’re paying for and what your day (or two) is going to look like.

Step One: The Site Visit and Slab Check

Every lift install process we run starts before a single bolt goes down. We (or one of our techs) look at your slab thickness, your ceiling height, your door clearances, and your electrical setup. This matters more than most people realize — a 2-post lift needs a specific slab depth and rebar-free anchor zones, and a 4-post or scissor lift has its own footprint and drive-on clearance needs. Skipping this step is how shops end up with a lift that doesn’t fit their bay, or worse, anchors that pull out of a slab that was never rated for the load.

For most Iowa shops, this step also involves talking through what the bay actually gets used for. A quick-service bay handling oil changes and tire work has different needs than a bay doing alignments or heavy diesel work. We ask about vehicle types, ceiling obstructions, and whether you’ll need three-phase power run to the bay. All of that gets documented before we ever schedule the crew, and it’s the single biggest reason our lift install process runs smoothly on install day instead of turning into a surprise-filled scramble.

Step Two: Choosing the Right Lift for the Space

Once we know your slab and your bay, we match you to hardware — Rotary or Challenger for commercial work, BendPak or Atlas for home garages. This isn’t a generic catalog pick. The lift install process only goes smoothly if the equipment actually fits the building. A low ceiling might rule out a 4-post and point you toward a mid-rise or scissor. A slab that’s thinner than ideal might mean a surface-mount 2-post instead of an inground unit, or it might mean we recommend a slab repair first.

We also factor in what you’re lifting. A shop specializing in one-ton trucks needs different arm configurations and capacity ratings than a passenger-car detail shop. We’d rather spend an extra fifteen minutes on the phone getting this right than show up with the wrong lift on install day. Getting this stage right is what keeps the rest of the lift install process from needing rework later.

Step Three: Delivery and Staging

Lifts show up on pallets, usually freight, and they’re heavy — a 2-post column alone can run several hundred pounds. Part of our lift install process includes coordinating delivery so the equipment lands at your shop on a day our crew is actually there, not sitting on your dock for a week waiting on us. We stage columns, arms, hydraulic units, and cable or chain assemblies in the bay before install starts, checking the packing list against the order so we’re not discovering a missing part halfway through the day.

Step Four: Anchoring and Mechanical Assembly

This is the physical core of the lift install process. Columns get positioned, leveled, and anchored into the slab with the spacing and embedment depth the manufacturer specifies. For a 2-post, that means precise column spacing based on the vehicle wheelbase range you told us about. For a 4-post or scissor, it means runway alignment and leveling across the full footprint. We torque anchors to spec, not to feel, because under-torqued anchors are one of the most common lift failures we get called out to fix on equipment other shops installed.

Once the structure is anchored, we mount arms, run cables or chains for synchronization, and connect the hydraulic power unit. Every fitting gets checked for leaks before we move to power-up. This stage is where experience really shows — a rushed lift install process here is exactly how you end up with a lift that racks unevenly or trips on overload six months later.

Step Five: Power-Up, Calibration, and Load Testing

With everything mechanically assembled, we power up the unit and run it through a full cycle with no load, checking for smooth travel, even arm movement, and proper locking engagement at each safety notch. Then we load test — running the lift up and down with an actual vehicle to confirm it holds steady, locks properly, and doesn’t drift. Any adjustment to cable tension, hydraulic pressure, or arm restraint happens here, before we call the lift install process complete.

We also check that safety features work as designed: the locking mechanism, the overload protection, and (on inground units) the fluid containment system. If anything’s off, we fix it on-site rather than leaving it for a follow-up visit. A lift that passes this stage is one you can trust with a vehicle on it every single day.

Step Six: Inground and Below-Grade Considerations

Inground lifts add a layer most shops don’t think about until they’re mid-project — excavation, plumbing for hydraulic lines, and containment for fluid leaks. The lift install process for an inground unit runs longer and involves more coordination with concrete work, sometimes requiring a saw-cut and pour that has to cure before we can even start mechanical assembly. Step Seven: Final Walkthrough and Paperwork

The last stage of any lift install process is the part that protects you long-term: documentation. We walk you through the controls, the locking release, and daily inspection points. We hand over manufacturer paperwork, warranty registration info, and our own inspection notes. In Iowa, this documentation also matters for insurance and, in commercial settings, for OSHA-related recordkeeping.

We also flag your first scheduled maintenance interval before we leave, because a lift install process that ends with a handshake and no follow-up plan is one that tends to get neglected. Cables stretch, anchors settle slightly, and hydraulic fluid needs checking. Knowing what’s coming keeps your equipment — and the people working under it — safer for years.
