A lift only holds a vehicle safely when two conditions are met at the same time: the pads are under the manufacturer’s rated lift points, and the arm restraint is engaged so the arm can’t swing out from under the car. People tend to focus on one or the other, but lift point safety and arm restraints are really one system. If the pad is on the right spot but the arm restraint isn’t locked, vibration from the vehicle or a bump from a tech walking by can shift the arm just enough to slip the pad off the pinch weld or frame rail.

Common Mistakes We Catch During Iowa Lift Inspections

The most frequent mistake is loading the vehicle before the arm restraint has fully engaged, usually because a tech is in a hurry and doesn’t hear or feel the pin drop. The second is placing pads on convenient flat spots instead of actual lift points, especially on lowered vehicles or trucks with skid plates. We replace rather than repair whenever the restraint has visible metal fatigue, when the notch is rounded enough that the pin doesn’t seat fully, or when the lift is old enough that OEM replacement parts are the safer bet over a shop-fabricated fix.
