A good lift maintenance schedule is the cheapest insurance a shop can buy, and after installing and servicing lifts across Iowa for years we can tell you almost every catastrophic failure we get called out to was preventable with about ten minutes of attention a week. Why Most Shops Never Actually Build One

Nobody argues against preventive maintenance. Shops skip it because the work is invisible until it is an emergency. A technician who spends fifteen minutes wiping down columns and checking cable tension has nothing to show a service writer, and there is always a car on the hoist that needs to go home today. We have walked into shops in central Iowa where the manager genuinely believed the lifts were being serviced because someone said they were doing it three years ago. The person who did it left. The task left with them.

The second reason is that the manuals are intimidating. A factory manual might list forty checkpoints across five intervals, written in language that assumes a maintenance department. A two-bay independent shop reads that and quietly closes the binder. What works instead is a one-page sheet taped inside the tool cabinet with maybe eight items on it, split into daily, monthly, and annual columns, with a name attached to each column. That is a real lift maintenance schedule — short enough that it gets done, specific enough that skipping it is obvious. The Daily Walk: Sixty Seconds Before the First Car

Daily items are not really maintenance. They are a sanity check, and they belong to whoever is using the lift that day rather than to a designated person. Look at the cables or chains where they enter the columns. Look for a puddle under the power unit. Put the lift up empty a few inches and listen — a healthy lift is boring, and a change in sound is the earliest warning you will ever get. Then drop it onto the locks and confirm every lock engages with a clean click. If one column clicks and the other does not, stop and call someone.

On a two-post, add arm restraints to the list. Swing each arm and confirm the restraint gear engages and holds. Restraints are the single most abused part on any two-post lift, and worn restraint gears are the reason vehicles slip off pads. On a four-post, look at your slack cable safeties and make sure the runways still sit level with each other. None of this takes real time. In a busy shop with three lifts, the whole daily pass is under five minutes, and it is the part of the lift maintenance schedule that catches problems while they are still cheap.

Monthly Work: Grease, Torque, and Fluid

Monthly is where the actual wrenching happens, and it should belong to one named technician. Lubricate the sheaves and pulleys, the lift arm pivot pins, and the carriage sliders. On overhead two-posts, the equalizer cable sheaves at the top of the columns are the ones everyone forgets, and they are also the ones that seize and start chewing cable strands. Wipe the inside of the columns and hit the slider surfaces with the lubricant the manufacturer specifies — not whatever aerosol can is closest, because some lubricants attack the composite slider blocks.

Check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, top up with the specified fluid, and inspect every fitting and hose for weeping. A wet fitting is not a leak yet, but it will be. Retorque the anchor bolts to the manufacturer’s spec — Iowa concrete goes through freeze and thaw cycles and anchors do loosen, particularly in the first year after installation. Finally, inspect all four cables end to end for broken strands, kinks, and flat spots. Any broken strand means the cable set gets replaced, not repaired. Annual Inspection and the ALI Requirement

ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for a documented annual inspection of every vehicle lift by a qualified lift inspector. This is not optional in any meaningful sense — your insurance carrier, your OSHA exposure, and in many cases your dealership’s manufacturer program all lean on it. The annual is more than a longer version of the monthly. It includes load testing, structural inspection of welds and columns, verification of every safety device, checking cable and chain stretch against spec, and confirming that the lift still carries legible capacity labels and an intact operating manual.

We do these inspections across Iowa and the surrounding region, and the honest truth is that about a third of the lifts we inspect need something before they pass. Usually it is small: worn restraints, a stretched cable set, missing labels, anchors below torque. Occasionally it is a column with real corrosion or a cylinder that has been weeping for years. Either way, the annual anchors your entire lift maintenance schedule, because it is the one interval where an outside set of eyes checks whether the daily and monthly work is actually being done.

How the Schedule Changes by Lift Type

The intervals stay the same, but the checkpoints shift. Four-post lifts and storage lifts live and die by cable condition and by keeping the four runway cables in equal tension — an out-of-level runway is a cable problem, not a floor problem. Scissor and mid-rise lifts have fewer moving parts to grease but they hide their hydraulics and their pivot pins low and dirty, so they need more cleaning attention and a real look under the platform. Inground lifts add moisture and containment concerns that no above-ground lift has. Mobile column lifts add battery care, charging discipline, and communication cable inspection between columns. Brand matters less than configuration, but manufacturers do publish their own intervals and torque specs, and we follow them — for Rotary equipment specifically we laid out the factory intervals in our Rotary lift maintenance schedule guide. When in doubt, the manufacturer’s number wins over any general rule we could give you.

Documentation: The Part That Saves You Later

A schedule nobody records is a schedule nobody can prove. Keep it simple: a laminated sheet per lift with a grid of months down the side and initials in the box. That is enough. When an inspector, an insurance adjuster, or an attorney asks whether the lift was maintained, initials and dates on a sheet are dramatically more persuasive than a manager saying he is pretty sure it was.

Also keep the paperwork trail for parts and service. Save the invoice when you replace a cable set. Note the date you retorqued anchors. Keep the annual inspection reports for the life of the lift — they establish a history, and they help us diagnose faster when you do call. Your lift maintenance schedule is only as good as the record that proves it happened, and building that record costs nothing but a pen.

Getting Started Without Overthinking It

If you have no program at all right now, do not try to build the perfect one. Start with three actions this week. Print or write a single sheet with daily, monthly, and annual columns. Assign the monthly column to one specific technician by name, not to “the shop.” Schedule your annual inspections for every lift you own. That is a functioning program, and you can refine it after the first quarter once you see which items actually matter on your equipment.
