We get calls every month from Iowa shop owners who pulled the trigger on a rebuild without lining up parts, labor, or a real timeline first — and now they’ve got a bay full of disassembled steel and no lift back in service. Start With an Honest Condition Assessment

Good lift rebuild planning starts before you order a single part. Walk the lift with fresh eyes — not the eyes you’ve had for the last five years of using it every day. Check the columns for wear on the sheaves and rollers, inspect cables or hydraulic lines for fraying or seepage, and test every safety lock manually. Note anything that binds, sticks, or makes a noise it didn’t used to make. Write it down. A verbal mental list gets forgotten the moment you’re elbow-deep in the teardown.

This assessment also tells you whether you’re actually looking at a rebuild or something bigger. If the columns themselves are bowed, cracked, or corroded through the base plate, no amount of new cable or hydraulic fluid fixes that — you’re into replacement territory, which is a different conversation. Build the Parts List Before You Schedule Downtime

Once you know what’s actually failing, build a complete parts list — not just the obvious piece that finally quit, but everything showing wear. If one cable snapped, the other cables on that lift have seen the same cycles and the same age. Replace them as a set. Same logic applies to pulleys, rollers, and hydraulic seals. Piecemeal rebuilds where you replace one component, get the lift running, then have another part fail two months later cost more in cumulative downtime than doing it once, completely, the first time.

Lead time is the part shops underestimate most in lift rebuild planning. Cylinders, specific hydraulic units, and OEM safety locks aren’t always sitting on a shelf — some items need to be built or shipped from the manufacturer. We keep common wear parts in stock for Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts and BendPak and Atlas home-garage units, but a full hydraulic power unit or a non-standard cylinder length can take real lead time. Get your parts list to a supplier and get quotes on availability before you schedule the bay closure, not after.

Decide Who’s Doing the Wrench Work

Lift rebuild planning has to answer a labor question honestly: is this a job your own techs can handle, or does it need a certified installer? Cable and pulley swaps on a two-post lift are within reach for a competent shop tech with the right torque specs and a service manual. Full hydraulic system rebuilds, anything involving the lift’s structural anchoring, or work on older equipment with non-standard parts is where we see well-intentioned DIY rebuilds go sideways — usually with the lift out of service even longer while someone tracks down a fix for a mistake.

We do both. Some shops just need parts and a phone call walking them through torque sequence. Others want us on-site for the full teardown and rebuild, especially on larger four-post or in-ground equipment where the labor is more involved and the safety margin for error is smaller. Either way, decide this up front as part of your rebuild plan — don’t figure it out mid-teardown when the lift is already apart and the clock is running on lost bay time.

Sequence the Job to Minimize Downtime

If you run a multi-bay shop, sequencing matters. A smart lift rebuild plan schedules the work for your lowest-volume days or stacks it against a slower season, and it accounts for how long you’ll actually be down — not the optimistic estimate, the realistic one that includes waiting on a part that ships a day late. If you’ve only got one lift and no slack bay, factor in whether a mobile column setup or a loaner arrangement can bridge the gap, especially for a shop that can’t afford a full week without a working lift.

Order matters too. Do structural and safety-critical work first while the lift is already apart, even if it wasn’t the original reason for the rebuild. If you’re pulling cables anyway, that’s the time to also inspect and service the hydraulic cylinder, check anchor bolts, and clean and lubricate every moving part you can reach. Reassembling a lift twice because you found something else wrong on day one that you could’ve addressed on day one is a planning failure, not bad luck.

Don’t Skip the Electrical and Anchoring Check

Rebuilds tend to focus on the mechanical parts — cables, cylinders, hydraulic units — but a proper rebuild plan checks the electrical system and the concrete anchoring too. Corroded contactors, worn limit switches, and loose anchor bolts don’t always announce themselves the way a frayed cable does, but they’re just as capable of taking your lift out of service or creating a safety issue. Get Freight and Logistics Locked In Early

Heavier rebuild components — hydraulic power units, full cylinder assemblies, structural columns — don’t ship like a small parts box. Freight lead time, delivery scheduling, and even how the item gets from the truck into your shop are real planning variables, especially for shops in smaller Iowa towns without a loading dock.
